Oh no, if only California were the fifth largest economy in the world and were already helping fund FireAid, a charity concert for those affected.

Oh wait. Out of all 50 states, California could fund FEMA by itself without raising taxes by any noticable amount.

If that's the federal governments response to an emergency in their state ..... why would the state want to stay inside the union?

The federal government wants the benefits of the union but they don't want to help you.

People will start thinking of leaving and just work as a country on their own if they're treated like this.

[–] [email protected] 45 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Um. That's what they want.

They want the US to balkanize.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 month ago

It was going to happen sooner or later, I'm just glad I got out of Texas before it started.

[–] BlameTheAntifa 26 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I am fine with California seceding.

Or the entire western seaboard becoming a new Canadian province.

[–] Maggoty 14 points 1 month ago

Canada isn't going to annex California. It would nearly double their population and completely upend their politics. It would also be a logistical nightmare.

Calexit though... Some people are starting to warm to the idea.

[–] taiyang 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Hell, at this point I'd say give us back to Mexico. At least they have a cool president.

Pretty sure California sends more funds to the federal government than they receive every year... Would be a shame if they just didn't do the back and forth and kept their funds to use as they see for instead.

I'm sure States like Alabama wouldn't miss that California tax revenue making it's way to them at all.

[–] Maggoty 20 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Calexit is approved for signature gathering. Trump might just push California right out.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Can Oregon join? Maybe Washington too.

NY/VT/CT etc are fairly democratic and could likely form a coalition.
Anywhere else, fight or move. You're political refugees now.

I'm here for Oregone and Washingtoodaloo.

I'd like to see Colorado in that mix.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 month ago

I’m sure States like Alabama wouldn’t miss that California tax revenue making it’s way to them at all.

Of course not. They're strongly against socialist policies like that.

[–] simplejack 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yes, but to do this individual Californians would all have to stop paying federal income taxes.

[–] Madison420 13 points 1 month ago (10 children)

No they would need to pay them into bonds to comply with the Spirit of the law but not the letter of the law. When the federal government represents California again the bonds can be released.

Hmmm. Sounds like if California can't get aid from the federal government, then they will just have to use their own money. I would suggest the comptroller to order all federal tax money in the state sent to Sacramento for use as disaster relief. They can't prosecute 40 million people not paying taxes.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 month ago

They are taking about eliminating income tax, so it could be a nice headstart.

[–] HappySkullsplitter 33 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Maybe California should halt exports of goods or services unless Trump delivers wildfire aid

“I want to see two things in Los Angeles: Voter ID so that the people have a chance to vote. And I want to see the water be released and come down into Los Angeles and throughout the state. Those are the two things. After that, I will be the greatest president that California ever has ever seen,” he said

California requires state or federal id when registering to vote and when voting for the first time in person. They recently banned cities and districts from making additional requirements.

Los Angeles primarily gets its water from three main sources: the Owens River, Northern California, and the Colorado River, along with local groundwater. Approximately 57% of the region's water supply is imported, while groundwater accounts for about 34% of the total supply.

As a former los angeleno, I have always been proud of the changes they've made to conserve water in homes and business over the last few decades and I don't believe most people living there expect to receive more water from outside the region as the climate worsens. But then, I don't own any golf courses

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I didn't think of the golf course angle. Lol. Trump just demanded a ban on golfing. We should put the word out!

California secession starting to look real attractive. Why pay for red state welfare when the feds won't return the favor?

All I'll say is that if somebody shows up at my door asking me to sign a petition to get it on a ballot, they'd get my John Hancock.

[–] comador 30 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Trump Translation: Fuck California.

California Responds: Trump, you're an idiot.

[–] [email protected] 29 points 1 month ago (2 children)

If Trump gets Luigi'd it will be because of something like this.

Some hardcore Trump voter in California or similar is going to get the shaft and become dangerous. Its only a matter of time... might not even be from a blue state considering how vastly he is fucking everything up.

[–] IphtashuFitz 14 points 1 month ago (3 children)
  1. Trump disbands FEMA
  2. A category 5 hurricane clobbers Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, etc.
  3. The states receive no federal aid.
[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago (2 children)

That's not how it's gonna go. The aid will require a tribute most of which will be batshit insane laws. Want federal aid? Marijuana is criminalized again. Want federal aid? Abortion is illegal in that state. It will be another club used to bludgeon the American public.

He almost got Luigi'd, remember. A couple of inches...that was it. Imagine how different it would've been...

For someone who wants to "expand" American territory, he's doing a pretty good job at motivating states to secede.

Going after the migrant workers in California agriculture is designed to cripple the state's economy.

[–] RememberTheApollo_ 10 points 1 month ago

The raids were only in blue states/cities. Straight-up retribution or attacking the economy of those who voted against him. Not raiding any red state cities is just as telling.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 month ago

the nitwit probably thinks sb1174 'banned' voter id (or rather, was told by a different nitwit that it did). it didn't. it banned local jurisdictions from making-up their own local 'voter id' rules so the state didn't end up with dozens or more different ones depending on where you were. it did not affect the id requirement to register to vote.

[–] CharlesDarwin 15 points 1 month ago

The qons act just like comic-book villains. This is demonic stuff.

[–] wide_eyed_stupid 14 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

Isn't California on its own somewhere in like the top 10 global economies? Aren't they partially funding a lot of shit in red states? Seems like a lot of leverage to me. If the government won't help you with disasters like this, is there incentive any longer to keep paying into it? Use the money to fund your own disaster aid and FEMA equivalent instead.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's the 4th largest economy in the world.

The economy of the State of California is the largest in the United States, with a $4.080 trillion gross state product (GSP) as of 2024. It is the largest sub-national economy in the world. If California were a nation it would rank in terms of nominal GDP as the List of countries by GDP World's fourth largest economy, behind Germany (4.71 trillion)

This is a huge part of why the qons are so very hateful toward Cali - they are deeply jealous.
