Example of a user not being able to see posts because of incorrect language settings configuration: https://feddit.org/post/8656952

This has been fixed in version 0.19.9, but if your instance is running an older version that that, make sure to check that in your account language settings (the checklist, not the interface language):

  • all the languages you speak are selected (for instance, Undetermined and English)
  • or that you don't have anything selected (in that case, you are going to see all the languages)

Selecting a language is done by Ctrl + Click on a desktop

I've always been afraid to even click on that thing, it looks like arcane academic patois that isn't meant for mere mortals. But the tooltips make it very accessible.

The tooltips only appear to work on English words, however.

I had one installed eight years ago when I bought my house. I’ve used it to heat the entire place, but this winter, I struggled to maintain even 20°C indoors on really cold days.

Well, today I finally brought my air compressor inside and gave the guts of the indoor unit a thorough blasting - and now it feels like an oven in here. I’ve been lowering the thermostat all day, and it’s still way too hot. It literally feels like it’s putting out twice the heat now. I was expecting a slight improvement, but nothing like this.

Gas stoves fill the air in your home with particulate matter (pm), which has been found to increase cancer risk in the long term.

So next time you buy a stove, consider choosing an induction stove.

Btw, gas stoves being better or faster than induction is a myth. They have certain specific advantages, but they are actually slower.

[Jury Nullification] is when the jury in a criminal trial gives a verdict of not guilty even though they think a defendant has broken the law. The jury's reasons may include the belief that the law itself is unjust

Until the wealthy and powerful are held to account, why punish your fellow everyday citizens? Use your brain. Decide if what they're charging people with is suppression or actually keeping society safe.

When those prosecutors start losing these cases, maybe they will start to rethink who they are focusing on.

When the German Parliament building was burned down and used as an excuse to fully commence what became the Holocaust.

Hitler blamed his perceived enemies for the fire (that he likely had started himself). All of this after he was insufficiently punished for an insurrection/coup attempt called the Beer Hall Putsch.

Let's hope this stays a historical reference with current US admin seig heiling on stage and looking for any excuse to invoke martial law.

Why you should know: The ‘a’ vs ‘an’ conundrum is not about what letter actually begins the word, but instead about how the sound of the word starts.

For example, the ‘h’ in ‘hour’ is silent, so you would say ‘an hour’ and not ‘a hour’. A trickier example is Ukraine: because the ‘U’ is pronounced as ‘You’, and in this case the ‘y’ is a consonant, you would say “a Ukraine” and not “an Ukraine”.

Tip: when in doubt, sound it out(loud).

Claude Sonnet 3.7 high level summary (though I recommend the entire report)

3 Key Points: "The Crisis Report - 103"

  1. Global ocean temperatures are rapidly rising, with 2023-2025 showing unprecedented warming despite La Nina conditions, potentially leading to +2°C of global warming between 2030-2045.
  1. The report claims this level of warming could cause catastrophic global food system collapse with agricultural outputs declining 14-20% per 1°C of warming.
  1. According to the report, these conditions could lead to mass starvation primarily in the Global South, with projections of 2+ billion deaths at +2°C warming and 4+ billion at +3°C warming.

According to the tracking scanner Exodus (can be found on F-Droid), which keeps an updated database on trackers and runs your installed app against its register, you can track what apps are tracking you and clues of how. Saw that Boost is tracking me and uninstalled it and went straight to Jerboa. Jerboa is pretty similar to good ole' RedditIsFun-app and easy to use, so I am personally recommending it.

From F-Droid:

For some reason whenever someone posts any news about Pixelfed one of the top comments is usually along the lines of “no dark mode, no use.” Boy do I have good news for those users!

Like the rest of the Fediverse, and unlike corporate media, there are multiple apps you can use! Examples:

This is also useful for users who have qualms about the Pixelfed dev’s more… distasteful? behavior (example I found today) and don’t rock with rewarding it, kind of like how a lot of Lemmy users might block or defederate the flagship .ml instance.

Charles Lindbergh was a hero for his feats of aviation but ultimately lost that goodwill once he started pushing bigoted conspiracies to keep America from fighting Hitler.

Lindbergh would spend the years leading up to World War II actively campaigning to “protect the white race” and for the U.S. to maintain strict neutrality toward Nazi Germany. He even flew to Germany to receive a medal in person from Hermann Göring, the infamous commander of Nazi Germany’s Luftwaffe, on behalf of Adolph Hitler himself.

According to the unpublished galleys of American historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., some Republicans even urged Lindbergh to run for President against Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1940 to keep America out of the war.

This dark night for the American soul became the subject of Philip Roth’s 2004 novel, The Plot Against America. Now an HBO series of the same name, the story explores an alternate future where Lindbergh does challenge Roosevelt and wins Presidency — with disastrous consequences.

Some phones, you have to manually swipe on the screen, other phones, it automatically calls after a 5-10 second cooldown (varies by phone)

Some of you might already know that, this is more like a reminder that it exists.

Why YSK: If you don't think you'll ever need to make such calls, you should probably disable it to prevent accidentially dialing (or if it doesn't let you disable it, change the default emergency number to 0000000000).

OR If you are in an abusive household and think you might need to quickly call for help, you might wanna have it enabled, set to automatically call after 5 presses, and set it with the shortest possible timer, and remember this option in case you ever need it (and hopefully, the people with guns don't point them at you when they come).

Why I posted this (Household Violence Warning):My brother flipped out for no reason, I was so scared, that I had my hand on my phone's power button just in case, with pepper spray in my other hand. I mean, idgaf anymore, if he wanna kill me, I'm bringing in the authorities, if they shoot us both, whatever, fuck this life, he ain't gonna get away with killing me (or attempting to). Luckily, I haven't need to do so... yet...

I just want to remind everyone of the quick option to call for help (in case you are in a situation where you have no other choice).

I didn't know this until recently, but there is a national do-not-call list you can register your canadian phone number to through the government of Canada:

https://lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/en

Additionally, if you're already a customer with the company calling or have been within a year, they are allowed to call you; HOWEVER,

Next time a company -- like rogers for example -- incessantly calls you, ask them to add you to their internal do-not-call list, and enjoy your peace knowing that if they call you again, you can report them to the government of Canada. They face possible financial repercussions if this happens.

This was Likely Recently Auto-Installed on your Phone.

This morning I noticed that an app was silently installed on my device. Android System Safetycore.

So what is this app for? Supposedly it is designed to blur any images that are sent to or from you the user.

Android Authority Article SnippetSensitive Content Warnings is another new Google Messages feature that Google is announcing today. It’s a feature that gives you more control over seeing and sending images that may contain nudity. Sensitive Content Warning blurs images that may contain nudity before viewing them, and it then prompts you with a “speed bump” that contains “help-finding resources and options, including to view the content.” When it’s enabled and you try to send or forward an image that may contain nudity, Google Messages will also show a “speed bump” that reminds you of the risks of sending nude imagery. - Android Authority

The feature seems to be geared towards google messages.

However why this needed to be a seperate app isn't really known. Why not just a feature within the google messages app? Google gives no explanation.

Another Android Authority SnippetWarnings check runs entirely on-device, it didn’t mention that it will actually be powered by an entirely separate app and not Google Messages itself. - Android Authority

Google claims it runs entirely on your phone. Whether that's true? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

According to my device, the app can have internet access restricted to it (via phone settings) implying that the app does have internet access. Any apps that dont have internet access wouldn't be in my settings list for restricting network access.

Here's the developer page. Not much in terms of detail going on there.

Here is the app on Play store with its further lacking detail and currently plunging reviews. Interestingly it seems the app has many good odd sounding reviews. Furthermore, all the new reviews are very negative. The app was 3.8 this morning. Plunging.

The whole concept of the feature isn't a bad one. However, I certainly dont wish for it to be automatically installed on my device as a seperate app. A feature that is supposedly for a messaging platform that I don't even have activated on my device.

I removed it myself as it can be uninstalled. It doesn't show up on play store by search, however you can look up the app link online and get a direct link to it. Which I put here.

Spyware? A helpful feature? I don't want it on my phone anyways.

(Yes this is a repost, I hope it isn't considered spam. Yes I did also delete the original one :/ . Goodnight 🥱!)

With the U.S. government now in total control by a political party clearly displaying fascist traits that appear to be dissolving the federal government and de-stabilizing the economy, this CIA field manual for sabotage tactics may be of interest to many individuals.

I do not condone violence or illegal acts.

Elon Musk's action are not his own and there are clear intentions behind them. They were planned over the last decade by Silicon Valley megalomaniacs, most notably Peter Theil (JD Vances mentor) with the intended goal of collapsing US democracy and replacing it with an autocratic system where its run like a corporation.

Elon is doing the dirty work and putting his face on it but there is a wider network of people behind it. His intended goal is not to cut government funding. It is to literally collapse the federal government.

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) published a paper in 1995 suggesting how outside mirrors could be adjusted to eliminate blind spots. This article expands on that paper.

I switched a few months ago. It took a while to get used to it, but I feel like I have a better picture of what's happening around me.

Have you tried this? Did you switch back?

Why YSK: Because if you are like most people, you also store your email's password in your Bitwarden Vault and not bother remembering it, causing you to potentially get locked out (since you wouldn't be able to log in to your email to get the verification code, because your email's password is in the vault itself 👀)

(Imagine leaving your key in your house, lol)

Source: https://bitwarden.com/help/new-device-verification/

Excerpt:

To keep your account safe and secure, in February 2025, Bitwarden will require additional verification for users who do not use two-step login. After entering your Bitwarden master password, you will be prompted to enter a one-time verification code sent to your account email to complete the login process when logging in from a device you have not logged in to previously. For example, if you are logging in to a mobile app or a browser extension that you have used before, you will not receive this prompt.

Good thing I noticed, otherwise I might've had a bad time next month 😖

Edit: Updated title to clarify that people who have 2FA are not affected.

Why YSK: There is a lot of cortisol going on right now. A lot of people are stressed, angry, and afraid. Those emotions all deserve to be felt, but over time, cortisol becomes neurotoxic (inflicting permanent damage on the hippocampus).

Oxytocin (responsible for feelings of love, attraction, affection, etc) is a perfect foil to cortisol. If you notice yourself feeling angry or afraid for an amount of time that bothers you, adding some oxytocin to the situation might be helpful.

Luckily for us, our biology makes oxytocin pretty easy to come across. Different activities work better for different people, but cuddling with a pet or loved one, watching cute cat videos, or having sex work for a lot of people.
