Don't forget about the intentional lack of people of color in this image!

"We had to leave the city to get away"

[–] drunkpostdisaster 6 points 1 month ago

Unless you're Norman Rockwell whome I think this artist is trying to be.

Hey now, they don't want to bring back everything from the 50s... Suggest bringing back the tax rates from those days, especially for the upper end of the income scale, and they'll look at you like you're crazy.

[–] Cornelius_Wangenheim 55 points 1 month ago

Or there's the fact that union membership peaked in the 50s.

[–] [email protected] 88 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What they mean is that they wish they could be the grandfather

[–] [email protected] 65 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Yeah they’re pissed that the cycle got broken and they never got their turn.

"I can't get through my day without a shit ton of drugs"

tbqf me too

[–] Nurse_Robot 26 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I haven't seen that one before. Is it "to be quite fair"?

Self titled EP

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Damn, I had "Frank" instead of fair. Not enough people use frank D:

[–] Tikiporch 11 points 1 month ago

To be queer, Frank.

The drugs and child abuse ones are still accurate.

[–] Stovetop 60 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And modern Americans are doing their damnedest to make the polio one true again as well.

[–] [email protected] 28 points 1 month ago (1 children)

A solid 30% of Americans are trying their best to bring all of that image back.

During the 50s, getting divorced was frowned upon. And I was reading about how housewife's frequently were either drugged/intoxicated to deal with their abusive husbands, or plotting to kill them.

[–] [email protected] 26 points 1 month ago

Ballpark numbers (guesstimated by ChatGPT). In the 50s (after the ww2 explosion of the US industrial capacity) you came home after an 8 hour shift in a fridge making factory and had an income that could easily keep up 3 kids (including education), 2 cars, 1 stay at home wife and a house (like in The Simpsons). Since then the work productivity has risen 600% - 700%, yet the average income has risen less than 150% and the median icome less than 80%.

I still can't get through my day without tons of drugs. Have you seen the hellscape that we live in?

[–] mynameisigglepiggle 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

I think we need to start normalising taking lots more drugs just to cope

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

We did that already, late 60s into 70s... The music was better, but the musicians didn't last as long.

I think they mean a single income household and being able to own a home

[–] RangerJosie 28 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yes, but also what OP posted. When the women and minorities "knew their place" and the queer folks just didn't exist in public.

[–] nifty 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You’re right some people do think that way, and others are convinced to do so because they think their worsening economic situation is because of someone else’s better social situation, when in reality it’s greed and oligarchic socio-political rule which ruins it for everyone across the board.

That’s the first part, the second part is to have oversight to prevent corruption and mismanagement

[–] RememberTheApollo_ 18 points 1 month ago

If you’re white, so you didn’t get redlined into some worse neighborhood.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Probably mostly for middle class white people. A pretty significant chunk of the population I think struggled to enjoy those benefits.

[–] Homescool 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I don't think about that because all of the culturally-produced content I have access to paints a steady picture of property and compliance. This is my mental model and my friends and I aren't in the mood for a new story right now. ^^^/$

[–] LittleBorat3 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The good old times that never existed, not in the 50s not in 2008, not last year.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I was going to say the 90s and 00s before the recession was better, but then I remembered it wasn't great for the LGBT. Homophobia is casual and mainstream up until recently.

[–] LittleBorat3 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You had 911 and these pointless wars and so on and I am sure in the 90s there was enough going on that I did not perceive because I was a child.

There's only one thing Republicans want back. Minorities and women knowing their place

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I am watching the handmaids tale right now. holy shit.

[–] InputZero 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah it's scary how much of Margaret Atwood's speculative fiction turned out to be speculativly accurate. Makes me really worried we're heading towards an Oryx and Crake future.

meanwhile they were doing syphilis experiments on black American and everyone else who were not white without a history in American slavery was deported.

Shit times all around.

[–] Doomsider 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It is almost like if you kill off half the male population there is twice as much stuff and two women for every man. We just need another world war to get there am I riiight?

They want to go back in time? Okay let's go back to before Europeans even arrived to America and natives were doing their own thing. Much simpler times.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Well grandpa seems to be enjoying it.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 month ago

Brining that trench energy and undiagnosed PTSD to family life

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago

Basically the plot of Mad Men

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago

I finally understand MAGA.

[–] jaggedrobotpubes 7 points 1 month ago

It's natural to remember the hits.

If you ever go back and review the whole catalogue, you won't be nearly so impressed.

[–] itsnotits 6 points 1 month ago

back to the '50s*
