Things that most Americans encounter:

  • friends and family who’ve had abortions
  • friends and family who’ve undergone fertility treatments
  • housing that is too expensive

Things that very few Americans encounter

  • people burning flags in the street
  • fully packed Trump 2024 rallies

This guy is a fucking clown.

[–] lettruthout 62 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Because people burning flags is a common occurrence and is a big deal. /s

He's drowning in his own bs and grasping at anything, just anything, to try to stay relevant. /not s

[–] shalafi 18 points 3 months ago (1 children)

It's dumber than that.

Flag burning was a big deal in the 60s. I remember calls for a Constitutional amendment gaining traction back in the 90s (maybe 80s?). The controversy was all over the news for some time and the right considered your take on it to be the litmus test of "true American."

Trump's reaching decades into the past, for what it currently a non-issue. It's not desperation, it's senility.

Based on this logic I guess we should see Harris campaigning on ERA any day now...

(Long wait)

(Checks watch)

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 months ago

It actually is a common occurrence, since the U.S. Flag Code specifies that burning is the preferred method of disposing of flags that are no longer fit to display.

[–] [email protected] 57 points 3 months ago (1 children)

The US flag code literally calls for the flag to be burned when it's no longer fit to display:

The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 months ago

Yes, but ceremoniously is the intent. I've done many flag retirements. These flag burnings he's referring to are as a message, which is totally fine and protected by the constitution, but it isn't dignified. It's not supposed to be. It wouldn't send the same message if it were.

people care too much about symbols

[–] Cosmonaut_Collin 12 points 3 months ago

Symbols are an effective way to manipulate people emotionally. It provides people with an identity making it feel like they are fighting for their own ideals and not someone else's.

[–] owenfromcanada 32 points 3 months ago (1 children)

First ammendment? Never heard of it.

[–] [email protected] 29 points 3 months ago (1 children)

The argument I've heard is that The Founding Fathers could have never had any idea that people today would be so terrible.

The Founding Fathers saw statues of the King pulled down and British flags burned.

They knew all about destroying symbols and didn't put anything about it in the Constitution for a reason.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I suspect that broadcast and social media has poisoned the people.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago
[–] [email protected] 25 points 3 months ago

It's political speech. Trump wants to cancel the First Amendment.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 3 months ago

As an American, if there is a law that says I am not allowed to burn a flag, I will go to the store, buy every flag available, and burn them all.

First amendment = best amendment

[–] samus12345 21 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

I'm an Amendment-to-Be,

Yes, an Amendment-to-Be,

And I'm hopin' that they'll ratify me.

There's a lot of flag burners

Who have got too much freedom,

I wanna make it legal

For policemen to beat 'em.

'Cos there's limits to our liberties,

Least I hope and pray that there are,

'Cos those liberal freaks go too far.

"Why can't we just make a law against flag burning?"

"Because that law would be unconstitutional. But if we change the Constitution—"

"Then we could make all sorts of crazy laws!"

"Now you're catchin' on!"

(Turns out you don't need to change the Constitution, you just have corrupt Supreme Court Justices pull "interpretations" out of their ass.)

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 months ago

you pledge allegiance to the flag! Which is made in china!

[–] jumjummy 19 points 3 months ago

If we respect the flag so much, then apply the same penalties to those stupid Blue Lives matter flags, the flags with Trump’s ugly face on them, or any of the other MAGA crap that desecrates the flag.

/no, this is not serious, and no, burning a flag should absolutely not be a punishable offense

[–] Dramaking37 15 points 3 months ago

This is a good opportunity for compromise. Let's all agree to burn confederate flags instead.

[–] 5h17h34d 13 points 3 months ago

He has no clue what it takes to amend the Constitution.

[–] NOT_RICK 12 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Gonna get carpal tunnel pandering this hard, Donny

[–] FuglyDuck 5 points 3 months ago (2 children)

naw. the people he's dictating to are gonna get carpel tunnel.

which is a shame because they've got to be pretty good at taking dictations to keep up with his shit.

[–] pivot_root 1 points 3 months ago

After long enough, stroking anything is gonna give you carpal tunnel. Ego and conservative ideals included.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 3 months ago

MAGA is more about mental gymnastics than dictations, to be fair.

But y'all are probably right on both points. Have you seen how much Trump posts on Truth Social? He's probably had Carpel Tunnel for YEARS!

[–] FlyingSquid 9 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Who gives a shit about this issue other than weirdos?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Plenty of normal people care about this, but they're authoritarians if they actually support this policy.

[–] FlyingSquid 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

What "normal people" care about burning a flag?

[–] [email protected] -1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

A lot of them are veterans and older immigrants

[–] FlyingSquid 3 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Where is your evidence for this?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Completely anecdotal, to be fair. I've seen some videos of veterans as well as first generation immigrants complaining about the desecration of the flag.

[–] FlyingSquid 5 points 3 months ago

Then I stand by my position that the people who give a shit about this are weirdos. Because, believe it or not, being a veteran or an immigrant doesn't shield you from being a weirdo.

[–] andrewta 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

So since my uncle who is a vet and because he cares about the flag he is a weirdo?

[–] FlyingSquid 0 points 3 months ago

If he cares about it enough to want a law preventing people from burning it? Yes.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Who is even burning flags anyway?

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod 15 points 3 months ago

The Boy Scouts burn a lot of flags.

Because that’s how you’re supposed to (reverently) dispose of one.

[–] [email protected] -1 points 3 months ago

Pro Palestinians/Hamas supporters do it occasionally, but you make a good point, it doesn't happen all that often

[–] DaddleDew 7 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

As the planet is turning into a hostile desert, as the wealth divide is reaching new highs, as people are dying while trying to jump through hoops imposed by their health insurance to get the life saving treatment that they need, as people working 40+ hours a week can't afford rent for themselves, let alone raise a family, as conglomerates are abusing the crap of their dominant position on the markets, as autocraties are feeling emboldened to use violence to impose their will on the free world, finally, we can count on Trump to really be connected with the people and know what their concerns really are.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago

That’s against free speech

[–] njm1314 4 points 3 months ago

What is it the late 90s again? We're being inundated with this bullshit?

[–] son_named_bort 4 points 3 months ago
[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Yet I would gladly eat a flag myself, had I not used my intestine as a rope to hoist a flag made of my own skin, if it would protect the freedoms of the proud people who salute that flag.

Freedom such as polygamy.

[–] billiam0202 1 points 3 months ago
[–] cheese_greater 0 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

It should be jailable offence to desecrate it by branding it with his shitty name in faux-gold and profiting from it when he's a treasonous fuck

[–] [email protected] 0 points 3 months ago (1 children)

So, as far as I can see, the only Bill of Right Trump hasn't flat out, explicitly decided he can over turn by presidential decree is the third? Has anyone asked him if it would be okay to quarter troops on the population yet?
