You can set up a personalized RSS feed with Feeder. It will take a bit of effort to set up, but you can create a feed that is very well tailored to your interests. You can get news feeds but also subscribe to other kinds of content, like scientific publications and financial statements.

I tried Ground news a couple years ago. I liked it but was overwhelmed by all the shit news out there.
1440 is a great daily newsletter with least-biased articles about American and world news.
I've been using it a couple years now, it's my favorite news aggregator.
It's just one daily email with the most significant news of that day, at least one source per story and often multiple sources for the larger stories.
The only ads are text, you can scroll right past them, and they include two or three fluff pieces at the end. Like a cat on a hamster wheel or something so you can get your inane meme fix as well.

You can use an RSS client like Read You and aggregate news sources yourself. Most news sites, as well as blogs and some social media sites support the RSS standard. Chris Titus Tech made a nice video about this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1Ho_RrF_9I
I suggest RSS as well.
1 problem with standard RSS readers though is that posts are sorted in chronological order so you might miss most popular articles of the day. Can recommend Inoreader, have used it for 8 years and really like it. They cache articles on their own server side so it allows hot/trending section which I assume is based on clicks from other users. You can read your feed also through browser / PC.
I used to use Inoreader, before I switched to self-hosted FreshRSS + fivefilters-full-text-rss-docker. I run both services in a Fedora Server VM on my NAS with Safing Portmaster + SPN for extra privacy. This setup should already hide all ads, but if you want be 100% sure, deploy some DNS filtering solution like Pi-Hole or AdGuard Home so your FreshRSS server won't even be able to connect to servers that host advertisements. This is the superior way of consuming content on the internet.
Edit: I kinda forgot to mention this, but you can either use the FreshRSS web interface, or connect it to a compatible RSS app like (like the previously mentioned Read You)
Any chance you have any experience with FreshRSS's web scraping ability for sites without RSS feeds? I've been dabbling with RSSBridge lately, but it seems like having this altogether might be a decent idea if I'm going to be mucking around with server-software stuff.

More seriously, I also use Feedly to aggregate RSS feeds from trusted news sources.
I use the "newpaper". It de-sensationalizes the titles, and provides a weekly (free) or daily ($) email summarizing a bunch of newsworthy events in a categorized fashion.
I like it because it seems to actually be what it reports to be, and I don't just see partisan stuff.
Just go with AP News.

I use nextcloud news for rss feeds, and ground news for regular summaries and breaking news, as if I'm important enough to need to know everything right away.
Citing your sources? Unheard of in modern journalism. Good luck with your search. I'll be interested in the responses as well.

But the underlying answer for me is an RSS feed aggregator. Set up your own feeds and tweak as needed.
I use Allsides. They show a subject from left, right, and center sources on big headlines. They also say the alignment of individual articles. They link directly to the source. No ads.
