My daughter just showed me a picture that had the words "Jay AF" written on it. I know what "AF" means, but what's the "Jay" mean? She went to a cirque du solil show and wrote it on a pic of some shirtless guys twirling around.

Any help from someone more hip than myself?

Jay is a person, and the picture that was written on invokes the same feeling that this Jay does, the picture is Jay AF.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 7 months ago

This is most likely the correct answer. Jay Is probably either a classmate she has a crush on, or a celebrity that she she has a crush on.

I'm going to just assume it's Jay Mohr. He's dreamy.

Why is your comment yellow for me? I'm using the browser.

Maybe don't use highlighter markers on your monitor?

(But seriously, it's no different color than other comments in this thread for me. Maybe it was a "new" post for you when you wrote that and the rest weren't?)

[–] [email protected] 17 points 7 months ago

You're probably right. I'll stop coloring on my monitor.

Because it was a new comment then, so it got highlighted. As of Lemmy 0.19.0-rc.5 it's orange. Or yellow. I don't know what it really is.

Jay is more than likely a person, because I don't think the kids are trying to bring back the old slang "jay" which was a somewhat derogatory term meaning "rube" given the context here.

[–] garbagebagel 6 points 7 months ago

TIL the word rube

[–] [email protected] 4 points 7 months ago

a somewhat derogatory term meaning “rube”

Also where the term "jaywalking" comes from.

[–] thatsthespirit 5 points 7 months ago

My wild guess: “Jay” stands for “Jordans”, that is, a pair of shoes which are deemed to be very cool by most kids.

So, “Jay AF” could mean “cool as fuck”.

[–] Crackhappy 4 points 7 months ago

You must be goking.

[–] Lemminary 2 points 7 months ago

It's "jif" not "gif"

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago

I won't blame them for that!

[–] radix 3 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Never heard it myself, but Urban Dictionary says it's an actually amazing person.

Whenever you look up names on urban dictionary you have to remember it's mostly middle schoolers trying to boost their own ego or signal to others that they're hot

[–] cheese_greater 8 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Doesn't it say that about every name?

[–] FireTower 3 points 7 months ago

Sometimes you see one written by someone who hates a person with that name.

[–] felixwhynot -1 points 7 months ago

Jay, obviously, is a person who isn’t from the city — hence the term, Jaywalking! JK, but that is a real thing. It’s probably not the real answer here.
