Kind of related but one thing I like I do on occasion is check out various enthusiasts subreddits for niche things and see what the community go to is. Like AA batteries and how Eneloop batteries are the gold standard.

Fun way to kill an hour and find some neat stuff.

Browsing the mechanical keyboard sub, the buy it for life sub, and any other subs like that was amazing and such a deep rabbit hole for the first time!

EDC is another one

Honestly, for the batteries, get the same capacity ones from Ikea. Significantly cheaper and the actual cell inside is identical.

when the flashlight is so powerful you need safety glasses

Battery safety?

You can't just drop a term like that and not explain. Have I been using batteries in an unsafe manner this whole time?

[–] skyspydude1 54 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Batteries are rated for a certain continuous current draw, and if you try drawing too much, you're going to have a bad time. Some of these flashlights can draw a ridiculous amount of power, and if you're putting a cheap knockoff 18650 in it with no internal protections, it's not going to be a fun time.

It's the same issue people had with vapes exploding. The original included batteries might only be rated for a continuous draw of say, 10A, and they're adding these crazy high wattage coils trying to get 30A from them.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 year ago

Yeah but charging is even more dangerous. These lights dont have built in chargers so you need to charge the batteries yourself.

Have you been licking 9 volts?

[–] FlyingSquid 9 points 1 year ago

Like you haven't.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Everyone knows you shouldn’t lick more than 8

[–] [email protected] 22 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm assuming battery safety is required so you don't inadvertently light your pocket and underlying pubic hair on fire?

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 year ago (2 children)

With 5000+ lumen lights even the light itself can burn you or your pants easily.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

I have a few pairs of pants with holes in the pocket from a Wurkkos FC12 I got on Amazon for about $35. It's bright as hell, has a built in USB-C charger, and goesnwith me pretty much everywhere.

If you know battery safety these are the best

And if I don't?

I see Robert Evans I upvote

[–] Bernie_Sandals 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Especially if he's talking about doing some really irresponsible but fun shit.

[–] cmbabul 3 points 1 year ago

He’s how I found out about the Flipper Zero!

[–] [email protected] 37 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I have a headlamp that's basically just a metal case wrapped around an 18650 cell and it is quite insane.

[–] FlyingSquid 19 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Were you planning on a solo visit to an abandoned mine or...?

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 year ago (1 children)

While you're joking, this thought gives me untold anxiety.

I have a mining background, and abandoned mines are dangerous as fuck

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

How about unmapped medieval mines with wooden supports

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

40 days backpacking 800 Miles on the Arizona Trail.

Walking from Utah to Mexico, in November with gradually decreasing daylight. Lots of night hiking.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Could just leave the headlamp at the entrance pointing into the mine. That would probably light it all up anyway

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I've used one for cycling.

Overkill? Maybe. Quite nice to have a dark country road lit up well enough to light up the road close AND far (most headlights have a tight beam that only does either).

Also I like the reusability/repairability of productd based on 18650 cells

Imalent MS03 my beloved ❤

Edit: 13,000 lumens in a pocketable flashlight that's just longer than the width of my palm.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Know anything a little cheaper? I'm down for something bigger too. Just want to impress my friends on the next camping trip.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

Nothing of a comparable brightness off the top of my head. It's on sale for $104 from their website if you get it there instead of from Amazon though.

I found this larger 14,000 lumen one from Emisar for $88, but no batteries are included, so you'd also need to buy 3 high drain 18650 batteries (~$20 total) and a charging cradle for them ($18 from Emisar) separately.

If we’re going mutually assured destruction we’re going high CRI

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Also checking that it's running Anduril 2

[–] CADmonkey 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Just so everyone knows, I'm going to use this entire thread for ideas. My brother would love a good flashlight.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

A bright flashlight is very fun

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

theyre going to eventually get lights brighter than the sun

Isn't this the guy that said he's staying on X instead of moving to mastodon?

[–] KepBen 47 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You say that like only one guy has done it...

[–] thisisawayoflife 12 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I remember this person specifically because of the douchey rant they posted and people clinging on their nuts.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Hey, he's also doing the lords work on there. After JBP posted some kink picture thinking it was some chinese consparacy, Robert Evans replied to every tweet of his with that picture to harrass the dumbass.

Robert's also an anarchist who hosts behind the bastards which I strongly recommend.

I would also like to know about this. But I don't have the intestinal fortitude to dredge through twitter posts. Anyone have a direct link?
