Summary

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican, has not lowered flags to half-staff at county buildings following former President Jimmy Carter’s death, despite President Biden’s federal order for a 30-day observance.

Blakeman has not provided a reason, drawing criticism from Democratic officials, including legislator Seth Koslow, who called the decision partisan and disrespectful.

Carter, who died at 100 on December 29, will lie in state January 7-9 before a state funeral on January 9.

To be fair - when trump dies, I will be flying extra flags at full mast, setting off fireworks, blasting joyful ska music, and throwing a massive kegger.

We already have a block party planned when he’s finally dead

[–] aviationeast 34 points 2 days ago

"My funeral is going to be the best funeral of all time, hands down. There be fireworks, there will be parties all over this great nation. Even my enemies will be celebrating."

I’m just going to drink bourbon and look out on a grateful world.

I got two bottles of champagne at home, I got them both from work, and don't really drink champagne, but one is marked Putin and the other is marked Trump.

I will toast the day they die with their respective bottle.

[–] Rekhyt 14 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Man the Kissinger bottle must have aged really well

[–] Tujio 9 points 2 days ago

I actually went to the bar and ordered a Crown and Coke in respect to my Cambodian buddies the day that fuck died.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

I didn't think to drink champagne at the time, but I did have a good rum and fanta

blasting joyful ska music

It's rare that the question "what's the perfect music for this situation" can be answered with "Ska. Emphatically, ska."

[–] MutilationWave 4 points 2 days ago

I associate ska with the craziest, and happiest, years of my life. I was broke but man did we have fun.

[–] crystalmerchant 10 points 2 days ago

I know one guy who will definitely be at full mast

[–] tibi 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

But that means JD Vance will be president.

[–] Cheems 4 points 1 day ago

He'll be too busy fucking a futon to do anything

[–] OhStopYellingAtMe 8 points 2 days ago

trump will very likely live through the next four years. I will celebrate his demise no matter when it comes.

[–] DrSleepless 2 points 2 days ago

You mean when trump goes One Step Beyond

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Yeah but is that really being fair? Trump and Carter have absolutely nothing in common beyond both holding the office.

[–] [email protected] 98 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Why is it every single Republican needs to be sure we all know what a gigantic shitstain they are?

Blakeman has not provided a reason

There's only one reason.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican

I call it an asshole competition. Basically a measurement contest to see who is the biggest. I don't know why anyone in their right mind would want to be in such a contest, but that's me.

The butthurt diaper babies are always all about the emoting.

[–] [email protected] 41 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

They've all gone mask off.

Gotta love watching the last remaining vestiges of our Republic fall apart in real time.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 2 days ago

It's not falling apart. It's being dismantled. Don't confuse the two.

[–] Treczoks 45 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What an asshole. Carter was a President, and flying flags at half mast is a honored tradition.

[–] eran_morad 56 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So is not electing felons, but here we are.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 days ago

Felons used to drop out and (largely) hide from the press.

Now that one figured out he didn’t have to, and we’re gonna pay the price for not prosecuting that dipshit for decades.

[–] T00l_shed 47 points 2 days ago

Whoops, all facism.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 2 days ago

Nassau County (and neighboring Suffolk County) have always been Nazi hell holes since LI was taken over by Robert Moses

[–] RememberTheApollo_ 17 points 2 days ago

They’re always so petty.

[–] TomMasz 10 points 2 days ago

I grew up in Nassau County. It (and the rest of Long Island) are way more conservative than you'd expect given the proximity to NYC. But that's not unusual in New York, most cities are staunchly blue, but the suburbs and rural areas red.

[–] BassTurd 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I personally think that the whole flag dance is dumb and in fact think that waving a flag in general is too nationalistic and culty, but if your a person that does participate in flag waving, you should follow the rules. It's a opt in situation, so it's nothing other than being shitty to not follow flag code.

[–] CharlesDarwin 6 points 2 days ago

Let me guess, though - if some lefty were to burn a flag, the same people not following the rules here would go apeshit.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Is that why they were lowered? I though it was for the terrorist attack in New Orleans..
