I want the wear a helmet vibe.

[–] Retrograde 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Found the parent

Nah for real though helmets are MVP

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago

I used to never wear a helmet when commuting to school etc. but since I started mountain biking getting one seemed like a no-brainer and now it's like putting on my seatbelt. Riding without a helmet feels wildly irresponsible and I even put it on when doing a test-drive around the block after having done some maintenance.

ah yes, the acoustic bike, famous for its sound amplification

[–] ShortFuse 3 points 1 month ago

Should be something more analogous to its mechanics, like "analog". Wait a minute...

[–] [email protected] 22 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Acoustic doesn't have a top tube...

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 month ago

Its just a very insecure step through bike.

[–] rdri 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Electric doesn't have the left leg of the owner.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

Acoustic has a red light in the front?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Some bikes don't

However: invisible pedals

[–] Lemminary 22 points 1 month ago

I'd ride them both. Err--the bikes, yes, both bikes.

It punches me in the soul when someone uses the phrase "acoustic bike." I get that people are using it like it is used in guitars, but it makes no sense when applied to bikes.

The literal definition of acoustic from the dictionary is "of or relating to sound, the sense of hearing, or the science of sound." Non-electric bikes barely make any sound! Calling them "acoustic"... it is a terrible label.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago

If you don't oil your bike, it gets acoustic.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

A better adjective would be "Analogue".

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's not really great either, though. I mean, there isn't really a digital/analog separation either.

"Human-powered" versus "electric-assist", maybe?

[–] techMayhem 3 points 1 month ago

Honestly why not just "manual"? Sure on an electric you also do some manual labor, but you are being assisted quite a bit. The other one is 100% manual labor.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I know and that was the point! I was half hoping the ai would add strings or wood features to the "acoustic" bike or an amp or something to the electric one.

[–] 3volver 4 points 1 month ago

Simple, manual bike vs. electric bike. As in: manual labor, manual workers, a manual transmission, manual computation, manual indexing, manual bike.

[–] pigup 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Dictionary experts are always shouting that the dictionary does not define language, it just describes it. If we're honest it seems that the masses are adding a new definition to acoustic meaning unpowered or human-powered (and they have every right to do so as they've always done)..

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

What about...
unamplified

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

I think it would just be bike or bicycle. If it's powered then it becomes an electric bicycle. If it really becomes necessary to specify then you could say traditional bicycle or regular bicycle. Maybe peddle bicycle vs self propelled?

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Is it a bird?

Is it a plane?

I actually can't tell.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago

My guess is a flying fish

[–] samus12345 13 points 1 month ago (3 children)

What the heck is going on with the pedals of the electric bike?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I mean, the "acoustic" bike doesn't even seem to have any in the first place, so...

[–] samus12345 1 points 1 month ago

I noticed. But not having them at all is easier to understand than...whatever that other thing is.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

It’s the future, brah

Do you want a “tron-esque nightmare” with no drivetrain or an “acoustic bike” with no frame?

Choose your VIBE bro!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Shitty AI images. AI doesn't know how to do pedals.

[–] over_clox 10 points 1 month ago

I'll take the one with the seat. Not exactly too keen on riding with the seatpost up my ass 😂

[–] werefreeatlast 8 points 1 month ago

Percussive bike? Wind bike?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

A quirk of english language I find funny is that digit=finger. Therefore, digital prostate examination isn't something as high-tech as you might expect...

Whenever someone asks me why I don't use graphical user interface, I tell them that "graphical" comes from the Greek word for "to write", so my command line is actually a GUI

[–] irreticent 2 points 1 month ago

I heard Marjorie Taylor Greene is actually Dog the Bounty Hunter in drag. I mean, has anyone seen the both of them in the same place at the same time?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago

I'm an analogue bike kind of guy.

[–] saltesc 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I don't really enjoy e-bikes. They're definitely easy transport, not something done for fun. Though I'm yet to try one on trail which could be great.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (3 children)

I'm going to go ahead and say they're actually motorized vehicles. They used to be called "mopeds" when they were powered by gas, but now they're just regular bikes that happen to have motors and so get to use the bike lane too, I guess (yes I am cranky).

EDIT: Either way, those fools should be wearing helmets. Always always always wear a helmet.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

It's a spectrum. A pedal-assist electric bicycle and a Surron are both considered "e-bikes" yet they're wildly different with the other effectively being a motorbike. In europe the vast majority of e-bikes are pedal assist with a 250W motor and maximum speed of 25kph (15mph)

EDIT: Pedal assist (pedelec) means the motor only runs when you're pedaling and usually the harder you pedal the more it assists but it cuts off at 25kph and if you want to go faster it's muscle power only from there on.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think pedelecs are distinct enough from mopeds to earn the name of e-bike, but throttled variants are a different matter where the line is far less clear.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

There must be Spanish (classical) bike and Russian bike (with extra spokes? Wheel?) as well.
