Where the hell did the idea of tipping your landlord come from, anyway? I've heard a few people in recent years bring it up as if it was an actual thing, and I'm just like WTF?

I believe it has roots in r/landlordlove. A ~~satire~~ Very Serious™ subreddit.

Flat earther-ism used to be satire, too.

Now we have people killing themselves in attempts to “prove” that the Earth is flat.

Never doubt the ability of satire to fly over people’s heads at 10,000ft, and for those people to swallow that satire uncritically; hook, line, and sinker.

[–] ObviouslyNotBanana 5 points 1 year ago

I know. Landlords deserve a tip for real.

You wouldn't happen to have footage of something so hilarious?

It's a video of a guy that falls off the edge of the world. You can hear him saying "see I was right!" as he bounces off the shell of the turtle.

Of course we aren't!

Pretty sure it's not an actual thing anywhere, just a subtle pervasive joke.

[–] ObviouslyNotBanana 35 points 1 year ago (2 children)

There have been some smaller landlords who have actually asked for it. If it has been successful for them or not I cannot say. I would assume not, it's fucking asinine.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They're asking for it? WTF.

But hey, I think the value of a tip is the appreciation it shows when it is not expected.

[–] ObviouslyNotBanana 4 points 1 year ago

It's been more like coercion as far as I could tell, but yes.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Asinine... Asiten... Either way, landlords rank high on the ass scale.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 year ago

I fucking hope not.

No I had an old landlord strongly imply he should be tipped.

They basically said "you know it's traditional to tip your maintaince man at Christmas, and I do a lot more than that"

I obviously did not tip.

[–] Lowpast 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Your maintenance man is NOT your landlord, and honestly probably deserves a tip. I tip my garbage men on christmas.

Fuck your landlord for implying he does more and deserves a tip though.

Closest thing I can think of is reikin in Japan: https://www.japan-talk.com/jt/new/reikin

NGL I thought this image was supposed to be the landlord pulling bags of money that the tenants paid by what each says.

No that doesn't make much sense, but I seriously have a hard time conceiving of any scenario where a landlord is supposed to be shown in a sympathetic light.

Fuck landlords.

[–] ObviouslyNotBanana 14 points 1 year ago

Fuck landlords.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago

Its satirical.

And I thought the tipping would make it obvious

[–] [email protected] 26 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They should be little rocks.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Little rocks like: Having to pay a repair maybe once a decade

[–] ObviouslyNotBanana 13 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Agreed. Let's make them illegal.

[–] MedicPigBabySaver 11 points 1 year ago

At very least any corporate levels. People should own houses, not, businesses.

[–] AbsurdityAccelerator -2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

So, no more apartments for rent?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well, I'm going to say that in some cases landlords are just the usual people who were a bit luckier. I don't think that applies to most of places with a high price for living and/or housing, but I have a friend that technically was a landlord while he finished his education and lived in dormitory he lended his newly finished apartment in a neighboring town.

What I'm trying to say, I think, is that not for everyone being a landlord is a lifestyle

[–] ObviouslyNotBanana 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Tbh the problem isn't the individuals who happen to be landlords, it's the system of landlordship where someone can own someone else's home and make profit off of their lives. Just because you live and act within a system that doesn't make you the problem. You can be a massive anti-capitalist and still need the money to buy food.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Fuck landlords
