MODERATORS

i've grown increasingly, increasingly tired of youtube lately. the exhausting shorts advertised everywhere, overwhelming thumbnails, sensory overload and just generally a really piss poor site. Is there anywhere someone like me can turn to?

Peertube has no content but tries to imitate YouTube as a p2p federated alt.

[–] ccunning 11 points 2 years ago

YouTube eats up so much storage and bandwidth, I have a hard time believing anything on the fediverse could keep up.

That and Reddit and Twitter content creators “work” for free. YouTube creators have an expectation of being paid which is another big disadvantage for peertube.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 years ago

Nebula has some decent content

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

If you want to watch YouTube on TV with a better interface sans ads, would recommend using SmartTube.

There is option to disable shorts there. It also has sponsor block to skip in video fluff.

[–] BeardyGrumps 5 points 2 years ago

This! Smart tube is fantastic. Can’t image watching YouTube without it.

Nebula is great, but it should be pointed out it is a paid service.

I switched to Newpipe on my phone, it's amazing. No ads and lots more features than YouTube ever had.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

not necessarily a different service but newpipe x sponsorblock fork might solve your issue with youtube, you could also try youtube revanced (please patch the app yourself) but be aware it still has trackers of google

or there is an extension called enhancer for youtube that can remove elements of the site which you don't like

[–] Alice 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

revanced sounds solid as all hell, where do i find it?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

here is the patcher app, you need to download the apk from apkmirror (be sure to select the collect version) then apply the patches to it using the app

[–] Alice 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

thanks dude ! i'll try it out later

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

no problem, feel free to message me on matrix too if you want more help

NewPipe x SponsorBlock

You just have to set up the sponsorblock in the configs, it comes disabled

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Note, that's an alternative for the YouTube app; it still depends on the YouTube service.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago

If you use Android/AndroidTV, you can install SmartTubeNext. Gets rid of ads, you can disable Shorts from appearing altogether, SponsorBlock, etc.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Nothing really comes to my mind.

Even Google is losing serious money on YouTube, and pretty much they're operating it to stop anyone else to come up with any alternative.

PeerTube is somewhat promising though.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I don't know how serious it is, but Peer Tube is aspiring to be what you're looking for - a YouTube service that allows independent instances and federation. Here's the wiki detail.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

This is the Fediverse alternative.

I think that it's going to be the hardest service to run on the Fediverse, as the bandwidth costs from streaming videos are the highest. I'd think that stuff like lemmy/kbin being an alternative to Reddit, or Mastodon to Twitter is going to be easier to do.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Obviously it depends on the scale but part of peertube's viability relies on the fact that it's peer to peer sharing the video with you, so it's not just that host you download from, but any host that has a copy of that video, which overall gives the network a tradeoff between storage space and bandwidth

Vimeo is not an alternative to Youtube. It's a submitter-paid platform. If people had to pay money to upload their videos to youtube, it would never have become popular.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

@scutiger

No its not anyone can upload to vimeo. You get extra perks if you pay. I dont pay them anything, and heres a video i uploaded like 10 years ago, still there. https://vimeo.com/7464283

unfortunately all the content is on YouTube. so your best bet is probably to use mods/ custom styling to make it better (remove thumbnails, clean up layout, etc) rather than use a different platform imo.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There is the real problem. there are plenty of places hosting a few videos. However most of the content is on YouTube, so like it or not you need to go there for a lot of interesting things. If you make content please post it elsewhere (either only or as well, your choice) so that those trying something else at least have something to look at.

YouTube currently makes sense of centralized hub because we haven’t found a way to compress video files in a way that makes sense for individual entities to get into storage. You need next-level resources to run a site like that.

All of Wikipedia can fit on about 25 gigs. Reddit, probably half of that at best.

YouTube’s server farms must have incalculable space, how many thousands of terabytes are being updated each day? It’s biggest competitors like Vimeo are a fraction of the size.

With where technology is, the alternative for YouTube wouldn’t be a different website. It would have to be mods that bypass ads and customize the experience.

On mobile devices have a look on newpipe and libretube, you'll find them over f-droid or as APK directly. It's been months since I've watched ads. Don't forget to donate, it's very easy, even if it's only one buck, they're fighting for a good cause.

[–] 47_Alpha_Tango 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Would be nice. We have decentralised replacements for Twitter and Reddit now we just need one for YouTube that’s beyond the reach of the corporate assholes. Imagine being able to swear within the first 30 seconds of a video and not get buried where it will never be seen.

[–] Alice 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

hopefully with all the bullshit they've been testing out recently people get fed up like they did with Reddit and make a YouTube 2 themselves 🙏

[–] anarchoplayworker 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

So this isn’t exactly what you asked for but DuckDuckGo now has its own browser that has baked in it a YouTube player with no bullshit no ads no surrounding videos no “playing next” nonsense, etc. I’ve only used it like once I think so far (I don’t spent much time on YouTube) but I would already recommend it. And it’s available for Mac and PC, not positive about Linux yet.

[–] anarchoplayworker 1 points 1 year ago

If you search “DuckDuckGo browser download” it should be right there.
