Nassau County police on Thursday have responded to a bomb threat at the home of Judge Arthur Engoron, the judge presiding over former President Donald Trump’s civil fraud case, a source with direct knowledge of the situation told NBC News.

The threat comes hours before closing arguments in the trial are scheduled to begin, with those arguments still expected to proceed.

A bomb squad was called to Engoron’s home and was investigating Thursday morning; it is unclear whether Engoron was home at the time.

Trump had asked to deliver part of the closing arguments himself, but Engoron rejected the request Wednesday in a contentious email exchange with Trump's lawyers after the former president refused to commit to only speaking about the facts of the case and not engage in any attacks.

The judge didn't really reject their request, they simply ghosted him when he told them the terms under which he would accept their request, and after 2 or 3 deadline extensions their opportunity lapsed.

In all fairness, they did whine first before ghosting.

[–] transmatrix 37 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Literally “your honor, it’s not fair”

[–] [email protected] 35 points 10 months ago (1 children)

"your guy had ample opportunity to testify during the trial."

[–] transmatrix 29 points 10 months ago

Yeah, it’s so ridiculous. Extremely clear that he just wanted to go on one of his usual rants and didn’t want any restrictions. It’s what he tried to do when he was being examined by the prosecution. He tried to pull out and read from a paper he had in his pocket that would “explain everything” and how he did nothing wrong.

[–] homesweethomeMrL 4 points 10 months ago

FAIR?! WHO'S THE FUCKING NIHILISTS AROUND HERE! YOU BUNCH OF FUCKING CRYBABIES?!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 10 months ago

My little daydream is that thr judge's terms were something simple like "I want your statement beforehand so I can review it. But, you have to write it yourself, by hand. Your own hand." And he just couldn't muster up the gumption to do his own work.

"YOU'RE PICKING ON ME! MY NANNY WAS NEVER MEAN TO ME! THE WORD NO IS EMOTIONAL ABUSE! DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM?! BARON JOHN DONALD TRUMP, ESQUIRE, DOCTOR, AND PROFESSOR OF SELF INTEREST! YOU'RE A BUNCH OF MEANIE ASSHOLES! DON'T MAKE ME MAKE MY FRIENDS BEAT YOU UP!"

[–] Son_of_dad 85 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Been hearing about threats to the judge for some time now. Can't wait till we start seeing these people charged and prosecuted.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Cowards do their research and remain mostly anonymous. There has been a rash of online bomb threats lately and very few people have been held accountable.

[–] Witchfire 15 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

Perhaps they should hold the original source accountable for stochastic terrorism. If twice is coincidence and three times is a pattern, what is it called when it happens every single time?

Can't wait till we start seeing these people charged and prosecuted.

This should have been DAY ONE where apparently everyone in the world except the judges recognized this was going to happen. Remember that piss-poor "gag order" that prevented trump from talking about members of the court AFTER he'd already said a bunch of incendiary things and even then he continued to do so; so they fined him like twenty cents? The one that got suspended by a circuit judge who was 100 years old and eventually was persuaded that yeah maybe it should stay?

Fuck. I don't know if these guys are just right-wing idiots themselves who thought maybe trump was possibly somewhat normal but for the rest of us this is just another in a mountain of "no shit sherlock" trump things.

[–] TurtleJoe 9 points 10 months ago

It was this judge that put the initial partial gag order in place, and when he did it he basically said, "you can talk shit about me all you want,I believe that too be your right, just don't bring my staff into it."

Then when Trump continued to bring up his clerk, the judge fined him what he was allowed to, which was something like $10k. Wish it could be more, but them's the rules.

As has been stated elsewhere in this thread, the various judges on these cases are giving Trump and team a lot of leeway, because they don't want anything overturned on appeal. This judge has actually shut a lot of nonsense down, while allowing other nonsense to go forward, while being extremely sarcastic about it. He also just told Trump that he won't be able to testify (ie rant) during closing arguments in this case.

It's only a matter of time before one of these fucks actually does something.

Edit: They've already done plenty... I don't know why I worded my original comment like that. I guess I'm just waiting for someone to do something that even the most head-in-the-sand people can't ignore, as if J6 wasn't enough.

[–] iforgotmyinstance 42 points 10 months ago

They already have been. For years. Shooting up churches, destroying power grid infrastructure, etc.

It's just their violence largely affects brown people and that doesn't fly in the media.

[–] [email protected] 28 points 10 months ago (1 children)

And then the DOJ will be shocked Pikachu face.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 10 months ago (3 children)

As if the DOJ could be proactive without Congressional Republicans fanning the flames of an insurrection of their own. Did you see them grill Merrick Garland?

What makes you think they haven't? Remember 1/6? The MAGAbomber? Proud Boys picking fights in the streets? Hundreds of domestic terrorism events?

A great example of how his followers just want to blow up and maim anything and everything that gets in their way..

[–] [email protected] 13 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I wonder what's going to happen when the swath of impeachments going on fails.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 10 months ago (2 children)

They have no intention of following through on any of them, it's all theater for the base to distract from Trump's legal troubles. What the GOP do when their anti-Christ is sentenced should be interesting, do they just drop and distance from him, or do they choose a "disciple" to carry on his evil deeds and speak for him?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

They have no intention of following through on any of them, ...

That is probably true, but it's elementary for them to say, "The rADiCaL LEfT has once again prevented us from rightfully removing these evil and corrupt officials from power!" (wink, wink, nudge, nudge, swatting and bomb threats at least)

He's not getting sentenced for this, it's a civil trial to assess damages. His business presence in NY will get sold off to pay the debt, and he'll have to resort to grifting his political contributors to keep up his lifestyle.

All of those judges, attorneys and critics might end up in jail when big orange comes into power again. You just have to listen to his „Project 2025“ agenda.

And nobody shall say they didn’t know what they were electing…

[–] [email protected] 10 points 10 months ago (2 children)

The question is whether their fear of the next week overrides their fear of next year.

Lots of judges seem to be trying really hard to dance around actually doing their jobs (Engoron is not one of them).

[–] PM_Your_Nudes_Please 19 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Lots of judges seem to be trying really hard to dance around actually doing their jobs

This is largely because you can only appeal a verdict based on mistrial. You need to be able to show the appellate courts that your original trial was unfair in some way. If the appellate court rules that your trial was fair, then the verdict stands and your appeal is tossed.

Judges are bending over backwards to be patient with him, because they don’t want to give him any way to weasel out of it on appeal. Essentially, if they arrive at a guilty verdict, they don’t want him to be able to claim that the court was biased against him. When the appeals court goes back and looks at the trial, all they’ll see is the judge being patient with him at every single step. So his complaint against the judge won’t hold any water. These judges are playing the long game, by putting up with his shenanigans in their court they ensure he can’t try them anywhere else. Basically, they want their verdict to be as ironclad as possible, so he has no hope of getting out of it by crying to the judge’s superiors.

This doesn't happen after a coup, does it?

I've never lived in a place where the people in power took over in a coup. But, when I read about them, I never hear of the people who live there sending bomb threats to judges who are siding with the perpetrators of the coup. When a group takes power in a coup, they're normally ruthless, they kill people who threaten them, and they make it clear that dissent won't be tolerated.

So, these MAGA / Q-Anon types believe that Biden took power in a coup by stealing the election. But, they also believe that it was such a soft coup that they didn't bother to jail or kill Trump. It was such a gentle coup that the only "political prisoners" are the people who stormed the capitol, and then only after long investigations and public trials. It's such a kind coup that they are happy to allow demonstrations, TV networks that oppose them, discussions on the Internet that they can't control. These people also think that they can get away with sending bomb threats because the regime that took power in the coup is even softer on crime than the typical government, which would arrest people who sent bomb threats.

How do you send a bomb threat to a judge without thinking are we the baddies? At some point you have to stop and think: our side is doing X, their side is doing Y.

"our side" "their side"
Sacking the capitol Stealing an election
Sending bomb threats to judges Killing babies
Abusing presidential power on day one as retribution against enemies, but only for one day Charging Trump in several open criminal and civil trials
Paraphrasing Hitler Charging and trying people who rioted on Jan 6th in normal, open criminal trials
... ...

Like, how do you make a list like that and never once consider whether your side might be the baddies?

[–] MaxVoltage 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

dude they know they are the bad guys they literally go to militia meetings and went to jan 6 lmao /[ssss

Nothing screams innocent more than making bomb threats.

[–] rustyfish 17 points 10 months ago

Oh they are guilty and they know their Führer is too. They are just not familiar with getting punished.

[–] hperrin 23 points 10 months ago (2 children)

When are we going to designate MAGA Republicans as the terrorists they are?

[–] iforgotmyinstance 11 points 10 months ago

I think it's a disservice to good, hardworking Americans to limit it at MAGA Republicans and not all conservatives.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 10 months ago (1 children)

But that might hurt the feelings of the sacred demographic: old white men!

[–] [email protected] 11 points 10 months ago

Nah they said they were all domestic terrorists at CPAC 2022. No reason not to take them at their word.

They're domestic terrorists seeking to install theocratic rule in the U.S. in complete disregard of democracy. They should be dragged into the street and dealt with like the fundamentalists and terrorists they are.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 10 months ago

He’s just trying to delay the decision because he knows he’s guilty.

[–] betterdeadthanreddit 3 points 10 months ago (7 children)

I almost want to see what these bozos would come up with if they tried to build a bomb. Not exactly the best and brightest America has to offer so I'd expect some duds and premature detonations from "Jim-Bob's Truck Nuts and IED Emporium".

[–] [email protected] 11 points 10 months ago (3 children)

Timothy McVeigh seems to have proven that far right whackos are very capable of building a good bomb. Be careful what you wish for.

Having grown up in a redneck community, I'm quite confident Trump supporters can at least make a functional pipe bomb.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Agreed. My dad was a maga guy and a prepper. He knew the process to make plastic explosives and pipe bombs. He even had experience making functional gun powder that he had stashed away in the basement. The crazies shouldn't be discounted as harmless

It's not a question if it's functional. It's more if it'd prove itself functional at their garage.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago

They could very likely come up with something very functional, making IEDs, and even cooking your own explosive fillers is exceptionally easy, you really only need a very basic understanding of chemistry and circuitry (like grade 9 or 10 level). If extremists hiding in caves in Afghanistan could make consistent and effective devices with HME, then Joe Redneck with Internet access and over the counter access to Ammonium Nitrate Aluminum (Tannerite, which is legal in most states and often sold at gun stores) can probably do it too.
