If people didn't like making music they wouldn't do it. It's not like doing laundry. I'd say this is true for basically any artistic endeavor.

Even the popstars turning out the most generic trash you've ever heard, I'm sure they still enjoy it

Man who can't do a thing denigrates people who can, proceeds to make trash in attempt to replace them.

Sums it up perfectly!

"I don't like making music so no one else does" I guess is his train of thought

I’m not even a pro musician (though it was a career option I’d considered after high school). I dabble.

And I’ll be utterly and thoroughly railed by a rusty railroad spike before I let some soulless sociopath tells me that I don’t enjoy making music!

The rusty railroad spike in question

Most musicians will never record anything in their musical careers. Most musicians are amateurs who won’t go beyond open mics, bonfires, and coffee shops. Many won’t even go there and prefer to remain bedroom players.

I’m one of those musicians who does the open mic stuff and occasional shows, been in pickup bands and rocked some faces, but I have no illusions as to my place in the musical strata of the world. Most of us will never go anywhere with a musical career, but for the vast majority of us, it’s a hobby and a pastime, not a career goal. As a musician, I know I make a pretty good computer programmer, and I’m fine with that, but I can’t imagine not making music.

Music for music’s sake.

Bedroom musician here. I think you've summarized the overwhelming majority of musicians beautifully.

It's not a good career goal, but if that's why you're making music you're doing it for the wrong reasons. I think almost all of us realize this

What a dumb thing to say. I absolutely love making music.

[–] lolrightythen 9 points 2 days ago

I don't like him telling me that, for certain.

On another note, seeking recommendations any alternatives to this app?

I bought a cheap kalimba and like to just sit on the ground plucking away while my dog "listens" next to me. Just think of all the relaxing bonding time I could be skipping if I had a "generate song" button on my computer...

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Kalimbas are the greatest little instrument for just plinking around and having fun musical explorations! You can sit down and learn hard ... or you can just play around and see what cool little riffs you can come up with in an almost trance-like state.

Warning! You got a cheap kalimba. That's how I started. #5 was ... ah ... significantly more expensive...

[–] glimse 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think I will be building my next one...this one was $45 and the high tines are pretty quiet and hard to pluck. I'd like to go down a half octave, too

I want to get a DIY kit to make a kalimba tuned to one of the Chinese pentatonic scales.

[–] glimse 1 points 8 hours ago

Oooohhh that'd be interesting! I don't know much about Chinese scales...which is sad....because I own a Zhonghu for some reason.

Imagine if you had the latest AI-powered GoodestDoggo©, you would have a generate song button on your "dog"!
