Donald Trump’s angry threat to impose 25 percent tariffs on all U.S. imports from Mexico—delivered Monday via the cautious diplomatic language of a Truth Social rant—is widely being depicted as a bluff. Trump declared that once in the White House, he will impose the tariffs unless Mexico stops migrants and fentanyl from “pouring” into the United States. Seen as a feint, the tactic could theoretically get Mexico to halt the migrant flow, allowing Trump to pull back on tariffs later while boasting that on the border, he has already bent Mexico to his will.

But amid all this parsing of Trump’s intentions, a crucial fact about his new move is getting lost: At the center of it is a lie. This lie is hiding in plain sight: It’s the underlying suggestion that Mexico is not doing anything to stop migrants from coming and that Trump’s threat of tariffs is needed to change that. Here we’re getting an early glimpse of how he will deceive voters about some of his most potentially destructive designs, on tariffs and immigration alike.

All this is laid bare by the sharp response to Trump’s threat that new Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum issued Tuesday. Her statement is getting attention for its barbed claim that American guns trafficked to Mexico are fueling crime and violence there among gangs supplying U.S. markets with drugs. “Tragically, it is in our country that lives are lost to the violence resulting from meeting the drug demand in yours,” Sheinbaum noted acidly, suggesting that the two countries’ interrelated national challenges underscore the need for cross-border cooperation rather than Trumpian confrontation.

That’s a harsh indictment of Trump’s whole worldview.

Seventy percent of the illegal weapons seized from criminals in Mexico come from your country. We do not produce these weapons, nor do we consume synthetic drugs. Tragically, it is in our country that lives are lost to the violence resulting from meeting the drug demand in yours.

Not doubting you here but do you have the original source for that quote? The link in the article just goes to tweet....from a WaPo writer...who doesn't include a link to the original statement. I want to read everything she said

[–] djsp 11 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The Mexican government's website quotes Sheinbaum's original address (in Spanish). Among other English outlets, Politico quotes translations thereof.

That's weird. The Internet Archive hosts a copy of the page that you should be able to view. I would like to find out why you can't access the Mexican government's website, though.

For others, here's the contents:

Don't you think that should have been provided by any of the 3 people referencing it?

It's a nuanced and information heavy piece. Great for reading and thinking. So the average maga supporter will never attempt to read let alone comprehend.

It's also a lie that migrants are flooding across the border with fentanyl.

[–] [email protected] 26 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Right, why use migrants when you could use trucks filled with legitimate goods or American citizens which are much more likely to reach their destination?

[–] FlyingSquid 18 points 5 days ago

You don't even need big trucks. You can fit enough fentanyl on your body to make it worth smuggling. And most of the smugglers are Americans because they're far less likely to be searched.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

I hear they’re bringing clothes. Can you believe it? Bags and bags of personal belongings? Sinister.

[–] Sanctus 40 points 6 days ago (2 children)

If you dont know the cartels are fueled by America's insatiable drug habits then you dont have even 1/4th of the knowledge required to speak about the subject. You can't stem the power of cartels without quelling America's appetite for drugs or saying fuck it and allowing them to be produced in house (and at this rate fuck it might as well buy some Johnson & Johnsons crack)

[–] FuglyDuck 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I wouldn’t trust J&J to make your crack. Their talcum powder still causes cancer.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Unlike that hand-crafted, artisanal crack made by your local Pyrex scholars!

[–] scutiger 2 points 5 days ago

They use only the most premium baking soda available.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago

You don't even have to be specific about the US. This is the same all over the world. Illegal drugs fuel violence all around the world from csrtells. It doesn't matter if its Mexican cartels or if its the Dutch Mafia smuggling shrooms and weed or the Columbian Mafia producing kokaine. Its always the same.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Nice. I heard that she's a left leaning rather competent president when she got elected and it seems like this is true.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Uuuuh, no, no she's not. She's a puppet for the previous president.

I’m sure she’s far from perfect but so far I really like this new Mexican president.

[–] PugJesus 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I'm wondering if Mexico can annex us.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 days ago

She could start with New Mexico, on the basis of "It's got my name on it"

[–] Lemminary 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, that's one reason she won by a landslide! She's awesome. (The other reason is that Xochitl Galvez, her opponent, is a complete moron and keept embarrassing herself)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago

Man, if only a candidate being a moron who kept embarrassing themselves was disqualifying in the USA.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 6 days ago

I think I like her

[–] [email protected] 17 points 6 days ago

I'm kinda hoping she's pissed off enough to call the program to a halt once Biden leaves office and the tariffs begin. Just unleash the swarm. Or maybe wait just long enough to make it clear he CAUSED this, as the numbers of illegal crossings rise month after month.

Nevermind, I can't help feeling innocent people would be hurt by his jackboot thugs. And the MAGA-US isn't going to be a healthy place to live anymore anyway.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

When the thumbnail is small it looks like she’s wearing a spider-man costume and I think it’s oddly appropriate.

Is it really gun "trafficking" when they're shipped down there in company owned trucks and sold wholesale to gang members right out of the back?

The Company.
