Looked up the article. They're mad that Dolly Parton, who is a very outspoken Christian, is specifically the kind who embraces the "God loves everyone and that means we should love everyone, too" ethos of Christianity. In other words, the author of the article is pissed that Dolly doesn't gaybash. What a fucking piece of shit you have to be to sit down and be like "you know what's wrong with this person? They aren't cruel enough."

Us queers love dolly parton. Whoever wrote that had no fucking clue what they'd unleash.

[–] ikidd 57 points 5 months ago (3 children)

I think Dolly is who drag queens aim for, but they can't get their hair floofy enough.

[–] [email protected] 42 points 5 months ago (1 children)

You haven't met enough drag queens. There is no limit to how much floof the can get out of a cheap wig.

I heard her tell a story about how she entered a Dolly Parton drag competition on a whim. She was delighted that she lost!

Metal head here who idolizes Dolly. She's a national treasure the likes of Mister Rogers. Who has also been attacked by the right.

For those interested she's in a couple of VERY trans positive episodes of The Orville (one just her song 9-5 and the other in a long scene as herself).

Anyone bashing Dolly hates freedom is no good. A full on poophead.

[–] FlyingSquid 89 points 5 months ago (2 children)

She's also in the movie 9 to 5, which was what the song was written for, which is about three women who have had enough of their misogynist boss and get revenge on him. On top of that, she starred in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, which is one of the few films which doesn't denigrate sex workers and actually shows them as normal people.

[–] [email protected] 32 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I saw 9 to 5 when it came out as I am old. I still love it.

All 3 female leads were awesome, and she absolutely held her own against the legendary Tomlin and Fonda. Also recently passed Dabney Coleman.

[–] FlyingSquid 21 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

I was only 3 when it came out, but it was definitely a regular staple of the cable movie channels when I got older. My dad was a film historian, so we had all the movie channels so he could tape movies to show them in class. 9 to 5 would show up on occasion.

As you suggested, what an amazing cast!

Edit: Just read this on the IMDB-

This was Dolly Parton's theatrical film debut. In preparation for her role as Doralee Rhodes, she not only committed to memory her own part, but the parts of every other role in the film. Apparently, the two experienced starring actresses, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, burst out laughing when Parton let on that she believed that pictures were filmed in the chronological order of a film's script.

That's adorable and also impressive.

Shit newspaper with shit ideas.

"christianity is about hating people and Dolly doesn't hate people enough" -the federalist, basically

[–] FlyingSquid 89 points 5 months ago (7 children)

I would have few problems with Christianity if Dolly was the standard Christians tried to live up to. They sure as hell don't try to live up to Christ's standards.

[–] [email protected] 36 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Through my teenage years I got wrapped up in an evangelical environment, but as an adult found my way to a non- denominational church. It was eye opening. The more I talked to the pastor, learned and read, I realized that people get wrapped up in their denominations like sports teams. And since the different denominations come about because of different interpretations of Scripture and the "rules" some group puts into place for their team, no wonder it's the perfect environment for creating a culture of control and abuse for those seeking power.

This doesn't make me not believe in God, this makes me not trust the motivations of people in power. On the day to day, I try to be the best I can to people around me, and share love, kindness, and respect. That's my big take away from Jesus' teachings at least.

There are many Christians whose faith does not involve pushing the law on others, but instead focus on the gospel and its inclusive nature.

These aren’t the loud ones who push regressive policies. Because the ones pushing regressive policies aren’t doing so because their religion tells them to, they’re making their religion fit whatever they feel the world should look like, picking and choosing which rules to follow or ignore based on their worldview, shaping their religion to fit their bigotry. They would hate Jesus, who preached paying taxes, being generous to the needy, and accepting sinners and those despised by the establishment of the time.

[–] FlyingSquid 15 points 5 months ago

If it was just a handful, you wouldn't have situations like the anti-LGBT law in Uganda or just Trump's election in 2016.

I mean look what they did to Mr. Rogers

[–] ReluctantMuskrat 19 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Uh oh... what did they do to Mr Rogers?

[–] UnderpantsWeevil 32 points 5 months ago

Tried to turn him into a Transphobe icon by deliberately misinterpreting his more banal aphorisms.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Let's just say they've been on their "special snowflake" ranting looooooong before you may remember

[–] Jiggle_Physics 15 points 5 months ago (2 children)

yeah, when hillary called the trump cultists deplorable, and a bunch of people wigged out, crying about her saying mean things, all I could think about is how I have heard that, and much worse, from right wing media, for as long as I have memories. At the time people would say "but she did it as a candidate on an official forum", or something similar, while her rival was just a sewer vomiting this type of sentiment, and worse, on a daily basis. And all the people who spent so much time calling everyone snowflakes, completely melted down over one insult.

If you're ever on the opposite side of Dolly on an ethical or moral issue, you're on the wrong side.

Fucking eh!

If you spend 10 minutes looking into Dolly Parton, you’ll find a Fucking Angel.

Legitimately. Look into her reading program. Not just the news articles, but the written deals. She makes sure that if her program is a success, that the county is contracted to keep it going FOR-FUCKING-EVER. Her legacy is generations of kids who graduate high school because she sent them books.

And that’s just ONE thing she did, with a legacy that will outlast every one of us.

We ride at dawn.

[–] FlyingSquid 86 points 5 months ago (1 children)

That's exactly why they hate her. She gives kids free books, no strings attached.

[–] ThrowawaySobriquet 65 points 5 months ago

I can think of other reasons

There's a better life
And you think about it, don't you?
It's a rich man's game
No matter what they call it
And you spend your life
Putting money in his wallet

-9 to 5

[–] [email protected] 20 points 5 months ago (2 children)

She's not only an angel, she's a straight up bad removed in every possible sense.

[–] Hobo 25 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (10 children)

~~Did you censor the word "bitch" or is this some sort of fucking idiot censorship on lemmy.world? Fucking swear I'll leave this instance at a drop of a hat if it is dumbass censorship.~~ (Edit: It's shitty ass lemmy.ml that's censoring it, which is the above users home instance.)

Words don't need to be blanket censored on the internet. Go ham with moderation but censoring words is how we end up with weird phrases like "unalive" instead of what they actually are murder, suicide, and death. Which makes it fucking hard to talk about fucking real god damn mother fucking problems people are dealing with you corporate bitch ass shills.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 5 months ago (7 children)

I don't censor. It was the instance.

I'm sorry for all the dolly fans out there, but I have a confession... I don't care for her music.

But I will defend this woman simply because her charity work alone makes her deserving of much more.

And I know I don't even know half of what she does.

So if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go sharpen up my torches and light my pitchforks, because ain't nobody dissing dolly Parton around me.

[–] [email protected] 69 points 5 months ago (3 children)

Most people don't like Dolly for her music. It would be hard to get so many people to agree on one artist based on their music.

But anybody saying she's a bad person is just flat wrong or just trying to stir shit.

[–] FlyingSquid 24 points 5 months ago

Yep. It has nothing to do with her music and everything to do with her being an amazing person who wants to help children with her millions.

I live in Tennessee. The number of lives that Dolly Parton has changed for the better is immeasurable. The two things you're supposed to do as a Christian are to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself.

She loves her neighbors more than she loves herself. Anyone talking trash about Dolly is the worst kind of person.

[–] [email protected] 28 points 5 months ago

Dolly Parton is the kind of saint the Catholic Church will never canonize.

I hope these people have IBS for a couple of weeks. And during times on the can, use that quiet time to reflect. Praise Dolly. Amen.

[–] [email protected] 36 points 5 months ago

Old ska kid. Will bring extra mozz sticks for everyone.

[–] [email protected] 32 points 5 months ago

Somebody actually woke up one morning & thought, “Man, I know everyone’s convinced Dolly’s such a great person… how can I quickly cement that idea even further publicly & make myself look like an even bigger douche at the exact same time?!”

[–] norimee 27 points 5 months ago

THATS. NOT. OKAY.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Ah, the Federalist. Too much of a pussy to have been a school shooter. Impotently flinging poo at the rest of us.
