I loved sloppy joes as a kid. I'm sure it was terrible junk food, like basically everything else. Are sloppy joes even a thing anymore?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 7 months ago (1 children)

It's really not all that unhealthy, depending on how you make it. In typical American size portions, it is an excessive amount of red meat for one sitting. We have it on our inpatient menu at the hospital I work at. Though the portions are not typical, the recipe is pretty standard but with less added salt.

I made it about a month ago, and it was a recipe that added in a bit of lentils to add in some more bulk/fiber/texture. It turned out pretty well. Wouldn’t be something I’d make a lot, but I’d certainly do it again

Sliced onion is also a pretty good addition.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 7 months ago

It is a great comfort meal. Takes me back to a simpler time in my life.

They were a big thing back in elementary school. Man they were tasty.

But what's terrible about them, healthwise? It's just ground beef in a tomato sauce.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago

It's probably the same as with any kind of food. You can prepare it with good ingredients and it's fine, but when you buy that mass-produced shit, you now you are eating garbage.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I just assume most mass-produced products which come in a can are unhealthy until otherwise proven.

I mean the only thing in the can is the tomato sauce.

You still have to provide your own ground beef, cook it up, and then add the sauce. But you can also make your own sloppy joe sauce with some tomato sauce from scratch. And you dont even need to use beef. Ground turkey or chicken, or even some lentils for a vegan version.

I made this recipe a few times: https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/aarti-sequeira/sloppy-bombay-joes-recipe-1921632

It's not exactly sloppy joes but it tastes awesome and from the ingredients it seems pretty healthy. Just make sure to eat it with some veggies.

Sloppy steaks at Truffoni's. Big rare cut of meat with water dumped all over it, water splashing around the table, makes the night SO MUCH more fun. After the club go to Truffoni's for sloppy steaks. They'd say; 'no sloppy steaks' but they can't stop you from ordering a steak and a glass of water, before you knew it we were dumping that water on those steaks! The waiters were coming to try and snatch em up, we had to eat as fast as we could! OHHH I MISS THOSE NIGHTS, I WAS A PIECE OF SHIT THOUGH.

I'm worried the baby thinks people can't change.

Taco seasoning is used in lieu of Sloppy Joe seasoning mix for a Dirty Sanchez.

Was gonna say, the other three sound like sex acts you'd only read about on Urban Dictionary.

Yeah, I took her back to my place and gave her the ol' Filthy Kevin.

We are gonna have sex in your car! It WILL happen again!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago

Yeh, that's what you call meat that's not made into a patty or loaf

Here’s what my Mom used to make

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago

It's "Worcestershire", only 1 h.

[–] BleatingZombie 2 points 7 months ago

Thank you. I'm saving this

[–] merari42 6 points 7 months ago

It's a Fat Mike: you can eat it directly from your Linoleum Floor.

What the fuck is that, mince meat in tomato sauce? On a burner bun?

What abomination is this.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (2 children)

It's an American thing I guess. It's actually really good. You can 1+ it by adding mozzarella.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago

Or sharp cheddar. It's so good with some cheddar

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Mozzarella? How bout pickles.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago

That would probably taste really good too.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 7 months ago (2 children)

That is a Sloppy Joe. There is also a non-zero percent chance that the sauce used here is a brand of canned sloppy joe sauce called Manwich.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Manwich is pretty nasty shit and you can make your own super basic sloppy joe with just a little ketchup, brown sugar, and lemon juice. Add it right in the pan after you've browned the meat. This way you can control the sweetness and the sauciness. If you wanna get fancy you can also add a little soy sauce, garlic and onion powder, and maybe some liquid smoke or smoked paprika for some extra depth.

[–] AA5B 1 points 7 months ago

No mustard? My family always had mustard

[–] [email protected] 5 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

It's basically meat sauce between burger buns. I haven't had one in ages, but they would make frequent appearances in grade school cafeterias and other events involving large amounts of children needing to be fed with low effort. I remember quite liking them; it's basic, but great comfort food, and easy to eat.

[–] Theharpyeagle 1 points 7 months ago

Sloppy joes are great, just make sure to have a hearty, toasted bun so they don't get too sloppy.

Honestly it's been a few years since I had one, know what I'm making next week.

[–] son_named_bort 5 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Some people call it barbecue for some reason.

[–] AA5B 3 points 7 months ago

When my kids were little, they wouldn’t eat something that sounded messy: we had to call it something else to get them to eat it

[–] RIP_Cheems 4 points 7 months ago

If you don't call it a sloppy joe, your wrong.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 7 months ago

This sounds like the cast of a Bob Mortimer story.

[–] bruhduh 3 points 7 months ago

Boys are back in town

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago

Even the names for their food is disgusting.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago

And in the left corner weighing in at 450 pounds it's Filthy Kevin!
