I have made it habit to put my laundry basket somewhere where I have to step over it to go to bed whenever I switch on my washing machine. Makes it easier to not forget. If I don't, I may as well wash the laundry a second time, because forgetting it in the machine over night means it starts to stink...

Until "stepping over the basket" immediately becomes the new normal

[–] waigl 9 points 1 year ago

Yepp, that's a risk.

White vinegar for everyone!

Timers fucking everywhere my dude. If it weren't for timers (on my phone, my watch, work/personal computers, etc) I'd forget to do all kinds of shit.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeh but then I just dismiss the timer and it is gone from my brain before my phone is even set back on the table

See, this is where shit like Amdroid comes in handy. Among the challenge (dismiss your alarm) options, they have NFC and QR/barcode as options. So you can force yourself to not be lazy by creating a tag, barcode or QR code that lives next to the thing you need to do by having to scan your verification to be able to shut your phone up.

I don't really have much advice on making you accountable to yourself, but the little things like this help force you to adult and not fuck up as much. Only thing that worked for me was to give myself a ton of anxiety so that overcoming my laziness/forgetfulness to prevent me from feeling the crippling anxiety from not getting shit done. 2/10, don't recommend.

And my calendar, I don't understand how anyone could function without.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Oh fuck yes. Only problem is remembering to add/update events. And with three adhd af people working off of a shared calendar.... Well, I'm just surprised we don't double book more often.

I find the voice assistant on my android to be extra helpful for setting timers because it is way easier to just hit the assistant button and say start a timer for however long rather than messing around looking for the clock app and trying to put in the settings by hand.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

If you're on Android, I
Amdroid is great. Combination alarm clock/countdown timer, let's you save many different countdowns/alarms with names and alerting styles.

I use it all the time to make sure I don't forget shit. Washer and dryer each have a countdown for the length they run, along with dishwasher for the same reason.

I also use LifeUp to gamify my task list to help ensure I (generally) remember to do my daily/weekly tasks.

Ngl I find using an oven or microwave timer to be most effective, something external that I have to get up and go turn off forces me to deal with it immediately, phone alarms can be silenced and ignored lol

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

We just got one of those new heat pump washer dryer combos. It's already saved my clothes a few times.

[–] pigup 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I want two of them for more laundry power

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Ours only takes a regular 15 amp circuit and washer hookups. Seems doable to have two to me. We just didn't because we're on a septic system and don't want to overload it.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Damn I wish I had money

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

I have done that to the same clothes twice when I was living on my own because they kept smelling horrible.

On a similar note, does anyone else think they are just incompetent at something even when they know they have ADHD and the idea that said incompetence is caused by ADHD doesn't cross their mind until they see them like this.

I like our new Samsung dryer as it plays a tune when it's done plus I get a notification on my phone. When our washing machine eventually breaks I want one that has similar features so it's easier to keep track.

[–] AA5B 5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I wish I had that old style buzzer you could hear throughout the house - I can’t hear that little tune unless I’m already in the basement.

At the time, phone notification was like $300 /machine more, which seemed excessive (although I’m tempted to do a weekend project to build something)

So realistically, the innovation I most appreciate is accurate time estimate and a digital display. I just set a timer wherever I am

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Home assistant is gonna be your friend. Get a power sensor or vibration sensor and set up an automation to detect when the machine is running and then when done it'll remind you (as often as you need) until you dismiss the reminder or click a button or whatever you need.

[–] AA5B 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes, I use HA and have read where people share about using a power monitor to know when the machines are done.

However this is the first time anyone brought up a vibration sensor. What a cool idea! I’ve never looked into such thing: are there devices you’d recommend or is this more of a build your own ?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Devices exist for vibration sensing. They are often used for intrusion detection to put on doors and windows but can just as well be used on a washing machine. I have not tried any of them so can't talk about how well the quality is on them. Otherwise if you are comfortable using esp home it sound be really easy to build something with almost any cheap accelerometer.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Ah yes ours just gives a notification when it's ready. Plus the display will always show how much time is left and it'll show up in the app as well. If its not dry yet it'll adjust the timer but it always gives an estimate on when it should be finished (time left as well as the expected time it will be finished).

I can hear the tune from the other room, but I like the notification on my phone as a bonus!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Use a timer? Dump the clothes in a pile, most of your stuff doesn't need to be folded. Pull out shirts and lay them flat to fold later when brain good.

I feel personally attacked :p
