U.S. Federal Communications Commission chair Jessica Rosenworcel plans to begin an effort to reinstate landmark net neutrality rules rescinded under then-President Donald Trump, sources briefed on the matter said Monday.

The move comes after Democrats took majority control of the five-member FCC on Monday for the first time since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021 when new FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez was sworn in.

The FCC is set to take an initial vote on the net neutrality proposal in October, the sources added.

No contest. Americans fought so hard for Net Neutrality, and then Trump and Ajit Pai popped in and took a steaming shit on everything.

I read that as "a streaming shit". I guess that works, too.

Has there ever been a better example of the government giving the middle finger to its constituents? Nearly 90% of Democrats and 80% of Republicans supported net neutrality and it STILL got overturned. That just blows my mind.

[–] [email protected] 152 points 11 months ago (3 children)

Codify it into law or it will just be destroyed again the next time we're stupid enough to elect a Republican.

[–] [email protected] 41 points 11 months ago

I agree, but we can't even fund the fucking government as long as the Republicans control the House.

[–] [email protected] 27 points 11 months ago

They don't have the votes. I'm sure they would if they actually had a majority any of the last 3 years that didn't compose "best we can do" folks like Manchin and Senima.

Verizon would just block it with their corporate veto powers.

Louie’s apparently a world-class windsock. He's now sheparding environmental causes through the Postal department which is set to revamp their truck fleet.

If some websites seem to load significantly faster than others now (youtube, reddit, facebook), it's because ISPs can throttle or prioritise traffic to certain websites and they do not have to report this information to their customers.

[–] Mango 10 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Oh yeah boi look at our data speed! (video capped at 480p expected speed)

Seriously, does anyone have a way I can keep my isp from knowing I'm streaming video so I can actually do that??

[–] [email protected] 4 points 11 months ago (3 children)

And that's why i run YouTube through a VPN (sometimes).

[–] Cihta 4 points 11 months ago

VPN is great and a solution but it can also be a hassle in many configurations.

And really there is nothing stopping them from throttling secure traffic unless you buy a business plan or whatever they come up with.

I hope it can be reinstated because allowing ISPs to throttle various traffic gives absolutely no benefit to the end user.

How was Pai not arrested for all those fake comments in support?

[–] unphazed 11 points 11 months ago

Remember: elections have consequences.

Also remember that

as much as disaffected and/or malicious actors (or Simpsons and South Park, for that matter) will claim otherwise

the two major political parties in the US are not the same.

Within a short time after Ajit Pai was appointed to the FCC chair, there was an article at Ars Technica about net neutrality being rescinded. The article also detailed the many votes against consumers on Pai's record. I sent a link to my mother, who voted for Trump, telling her that this was partially her fault and that it affected everyone, not just her.

We have a "no politics" rule, now, instituted by me. Our relationship couldn't survive otherwise. Just tell me about the grandkids, your pets, the weather. Never tell me how you voted to fuck up the world.

Wish we had a Congress that could codify it instead of worrying about the shit show that is admin law. Sadly that's what America runs on nowadays.

congress needs to put it into law which means we need to vote for congressmen that will do that. Granted mine do.

Jessica Rosenworcel is such a babe

[–] Scotty_Trees 4 points 11 months ago (2 children)

If Menendez resigns, does that mean the Dems lose control of the Senate?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 11 months ago

From what I read the governor of the state (democrat) would pick a replacement to fill the rest of his term.
