I learned about this today. I already knew a few stories about her, how she liked kittens und Robin Williams.

The nipple story makes her seem more relatable.

The problem with what happened in 2005 is that the director pressured them into revealing themselves. Although I am confused as to how this was found out in the first place

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Koko could speak sign language, so she could ask.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I have heard that was way over-exaggerated

Here is an alternative Piped link(s):

It was a big fraud.

Piped is a privacy-respecting open-source alternative frontend to YouTube.

I'm open-source, check me out at GitHub.

No but seriously I am working on the Black Mesa video and general shitposting it's just taking a while and I wanted to put something out that I already had a lotta notes and footage for in the interim.

Great source you got there.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Have you actually watched the video? Or only like the first minute of it?

You would not be saying this bullshit if you actually watched the video, its incredibly well researched. (Fucking hell, the dude says before your quote that he has been researching this for a couple of years)

[–] Klear 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (3 children)

Oh the youtuber says he's researched it? Must be true then. Why would anyone lie on the internet for clicks?

Look, I'm not saying the information in the video is wrong, I'm saying this source is total crap and I won't even watch it because it has next to zero information value. A homeless guy might happen to give you correct advice on how to deal with a mortgage or something, but you'd be a fool to come to him to ask.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah no fucking shit you didn't watch it, given the video contains sources for the RESEARCH PAPERS that talk about this topic

Stop being so fucking smug about shit you haven't even watched. I don't trust the youtuber because he said it, I trust him because he properly sources his stuff and has a history of doing the same in every project he has done. Unlike you who has no sources, is smug while being stupid as hell and dismisses a video based on a joke in its description.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

b-but a YouTuber said it so it can't possibly be credible!!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

For real. A guy could recite a scientific study word-for-word and upload it on youtube and this mfer would think its not credible

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

How is that even remotely the same thing? This is the dumbest fucking take coming from someone that didn't watch the video to see whether there were credible sources provided

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (3 children)

She could definitely sign something like show nipples.

...or at least something that her handler can "interpret" that way

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

"hey, Koko wants you to take off your top."

"really?"

"Yeah, she's fascinated by nipples. Hold on, lemme get my camera."

[–] Snowclone 1 points 5 months ago

.... no? Well... we might need to go a different direction with your position here...

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Koko could not speak.

[–] Snowclone 1 points 5 months ago

She want taught an existing form of sign language, she was taught a never explained version of signing, which only the people who worked with her knew, and this was never documented in any scientific way for peer review, and the results weren't reproducable with other gorilla's or other researchers.

Best case scenarios, the humans involved anthropomorphized the gorilla, and thought they were communicating on a level much higher than they were actually communicating on, do to this.

Worst case, there were lying knowingly, and this was some sort of scam for money.

Although I am confused as to how this was found out in the first place

The affected people sued the organizion?

[–] zepheriths 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

No that Koko liked nipples. That was established before 2005

[–] Snowclone 1 points 5 months ago

Most information points to it all being fraudulent, so, the 'interpretor' was either dealing with a lot of repressed sexually, or they were using the guise of a talking gorilla to sexually exploit workers. Which, that's gotta be the first time that's happened, right?

[–] [email protected] -1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Is that an issue? As long as it's only Koko seeing them?

[–] zepheriths 5 points 1 year ago

This issue is the director was making people undress for koko

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

That Wikipedia page seems to suggest that the director was using it as an excuse to peek at their nipples himself.

[–] [email protected] 36 points 1 year ago

Dicks out for Harambe

Tits out for Koko?

[–] [email protected] 22 points 1 year ago

koko says show nipples. she also says I have to be there and that you should let me bat them around a little

[–] MrFappy 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Koko the talking monkey, says “Apple nipple hungry,” Koko the talking monkey, says “Apple nipple crap!” I wanna be Koko…

Whoever finishes the lyric has a spot in my own personal hall of fame 😂

[–] Snowclone 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

GORILLAS ARE APES!!!

AAAAAAAPPPPEEESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[–] MrFappy 1 points 5 months ago

It’s a song off of threebrain.com from about 22 years ago give or take. If you’ve ever heard the song “And wheeeeee” it’s by the same guys. Put me in tears of laughter back in high school.

For more edification, Ima plug the You're Wrong About podcast, which did a pretty great episode on Koko the Gorilla ( on Buzzsprout )

[–] Cruxifux 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Koko the gorilla and Nim the Chimp are still wild to me. Like we literally taught animals to talk. They have complex emotions and are able to communicate with us when taught properly.

And then the king of goof clowns Elon Musk tortures them to death by jamming chips into their brains without their consent. Fuck I hate him.

[–] Snowclone 1 points 5 months ago

You're not wrong about animals having real tangible intelligence that humans should respect, or hating Elon Musk. But unfortunately none of these animals actually talked in any verifiable, testable, or repeatable way. Which is a bummer. But you're not wrong on everything else!!!
