my direct relative designed the red one. My only claim to fame.

Oh yeah, well my direct relative flies the blue one.

He also designed the Anglican cathedral in Liverpool, I believe.

Sir Scott *tips hat.

There’s not many phone boxes left in the UK of any design now.

I’ve seen a few converted into tiny libraries or art displays.

[–] RQG 34 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The red ones converted to something else I always enjoy. We even have some of them here in Germany now.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago (3 children)

What did they convert to? I can't tell if this is a joke I just don't understand or what

These things are awesome. Get some books, put some books back in. Unfortunately someone torched ours a few years ago.

[–] [email protected] 28 points 1 year ago

Some people are shit stains.

Buddhism of course.

Seen one converted to a defibrillator before too.

Every day I understand more and more why Romans left Britain.

Which one is bigger in the inside?

[–] meekah 28 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The police box, not the telephone box

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

So the tardis lost her ability to adopt to the time and environment? What a shame.

[–] CaptainBlagbird 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've always said that Tardis would take the appearance of a chemical toilet in today's world.

It can be placed everywhere without raising any suspicion at all.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And no one would want to go in it, brilliant.

[–] CaptainBlagbird 3 points 1 year ago

They are even mostly blue too!

[–] ArchmageAzor 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Well yes, that's the explanation given for masquerading as a police box from the 60s at all times, chameleon circuits are broken and brakes are stuck on

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes, happened in the very first episode. What a coincidence.

I love how the plot of the first two seasons is that doctor shows the teachers of his granddaughter (yes, he has family) that the tardis works and goes with them to the stone age. Then he tries to go back and it takes him 2 seasons.

Shame about the lost episodes. I could totally see William Hartnell doing a couple episodes where he visits the BBC repositories to save the chronicles of his adventures from the various fires/ other reasons that we lost episodes.

I'm clearly getting old because mose whovians these days haven't seen any of the original doctors, or at best Tom bloody Baker. Sod off!

Seriously what the fuck uk? Now I'm never gonna visit!

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Even better those "newer" phone boxes are now so infrequently used that they are mostly broken. Also more often than not they smell like piss.

[–] TheBat 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'd say they're frequently used then. Just not for the intended purpose.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The smell lingers rather well. It doesn't need to be refreshed that often.

I'd say that David Cameron and every PM since him were several times worse downgrades than making an uglier version of an obsolete box but that's just me 🤷

I've never been to the UK. Is this real? No more red phone booths???

[–] DrCake 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Some still survive but mostly just for tourists to take a picture next to. Hardly any of those left, even the “modern” ones, actually have a working phone.

Yeah, why would you spend money clearing out trash, piss, and shit from them when everyone has mobile phones.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

I'm just sad I won't get the authentic experience of pissing in one anymore.

Are there even any of those 'newer' BT phoneboxes still around?
Granted I don't go outside much anymore but even a few years ago they were few and far between, with most having the walls, door and phone removed by that point.

People in Hull: "Why have you painted your white phone boxes red and put royal crowns on top of them?"

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Is the mailbox safe?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Anyone else remember the BT ChargeCards from the nineties? I always remember going to the red boxes and the phones inside being too old-fashioned. I'd dial 144 but could never get any further...

[–] Carighan 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah that's a hard pass from me.
