So far Jerboa seems like the move, Thunder looks nicer, but it doesn't seem to play nice with this instance so that's kind of dead in the water, at least for now.

I figure at this point, forget about apps and stick to the website. Good Android apps will come in time.

[–] nivenkos 33 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Jerboa is better than the official web UI at the moment.

[–] MusketeerX 2 points 2 years ago

Agreed!

I signed up and started using the web version today. I've just installed Jerboa and it's definitely nicer experience.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 years ago

A common problem to the whole fediverse is that if you are browsing a different instance from where you are registered, you can't really interact with it. This wouldn't be a problem if you could interact with the whole fediverse on your instance, but it's not weird to see warnings like "The magazine from the federated server may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance" or similar.

This means that it's impossible to interact with older posts that don't appear on your instance. Am I the only one facing this problem?

[–] phil299 20 points 2 years ago

Jerboa is working great for me so far 👍

[–] cybersandwich 19 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I think it's just Jerboa right now. You could set them up as progressive web apps I think, but I haven't really looked into it.

[–] dexchemist 42 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Jerboa is actually really fucking good though

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 years ago

Few qurks like loading comments from the last post i looked. Overall much better than web.

[–] MHcharLEE 3 points 2 years ago

Performance and stability can be ironed out. But the UI itself is already really solid. I love the animated comment collapse. This app is gonna be great a few months from now.

[–] Myriadblue 7 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

I tried the pwa, no where near as good as using jerboa. Just switched today. So much better on the app.

[–] T156 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

It is just Jerboa/Mlem for the time being.

Although it might be nice if Lemmy whips up a lightweight mobile site, like Reddit's compact. The current one barely runs on my iPad.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

iOS also has Memmy.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Jerboa is the only actively developed option on Android right now.

That being said, a web wrapper like hermit is nice enough as an interim pick, if jerboa isn't doing it for you.

[–] MusketeerX 1 points 2 years ago

That's what I was doing, but I just started using Jerboa and I prefer it.

Hermit was definitely better than the straight browser experience though.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Jerboa is getting there, but for now I’d recommend using the progressive web app

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

What is the benefit of the web app? A genuine question

[–] RemKiad 6 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

From what I've seen, you can search for individual comments/posts related to a topic (advanced search), send private messages, you can see what's trending and there are more options for moderators to manage and create communities.

But Jerboa is already good and I prefer the interface over the web app, especially on mobile. The only issue bothering me is table format is broken.

[–] tallwookie 15 points 2 years ago (3 children)

browser. install the website to the desktop. and done

[–] exreddituser 3 points 2 years ago

Browser version works surprisingly well on mobile, at least better than Reddit's browser version which is either completely broken or constantly asking me to install the official reddit app.

[–] kcdaguy 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

This works pretty well for me. Thank you.

[–] tallwookie 1 points 2 years ago
[–] SoLongSealion 2 points 2 years ago

This is the way to go. Go to the website on your phone and press the three dots. Then press install app.

[–] MargotRobbie 15 points 2 years ago (8 children)

Jerboa. It's pretty bad though, I wouldn't even really call it "usable" since it crashes so much, had to just browse on Firefox on my phone.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I don't think I've had a single crash apart from when clicking on a lemmy link

[–] kratoz29 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

You call it a crash, I call it a quick exit button /s

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago

It is remarkably quick! Very efficient crash

[–] justhach 16 points 2 years ago (4 children)

It just started, though. I'm sure once they get over the hiccough of the influx of new users, itll run smoother.

I haven't had any issues with crashing (so far).

[–] MargotRobbie 3 points 2 years ago

Yeah, I know, I do hope it gets better though, and I'll be checking in on every new version they release. But the pessimist in me thinks many open source project has a tendency to not care about UX at all even after years of development (see: RetroArch on Android), which I hope won't be true for Lemmy/Jerboa.

In my experience, Jerboa is like 85% there. It is buggy sometimes, but it's much easier for me to use. It also has a true dark mode which looks fantastic on an OLED.

[–] wildeaboutoskar 7 points 2 years ago

I find Jerboa times out quite a lot, never quite sure if my posts go through

[–] LaunchesKayaks 6 points 2 years ago

I haven't had any issues other than not being able to reply to comment responses I get.

[–] OFS_Razgriz 3 points 2 years ago

Definitely some things I'm missing on jerboa. There's no way to go to a post directly from your notification feed which is like... A crucial thing to be able to do.

[–] Soltros 3 points 2 years ago

You know, in Jerboa, I can't even access half the settings. Just doesn't let me scroll. Don't know if it's just me.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

What device / os are you using it on? I have it on a Pixel 4a and it works with no issues that I've noticed, been smooth sailing. Coming from RIF it also feels fairly familiar.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I put jerboa in the place where I used to have the Sync Pro app mostly just to start coming here out of habit. But a lot of times I end up browsing through chrome because I get a lot of random JSON parse errors in Jerboa. There's a paid app called Fedilab I'm curious about but it doesn't seem to work with Lemmy instances yet, I think it's mostly for Mastodon.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I have Fedilab, it does not work with lemmy.

Same here. The Sync slot is now Jerboa.

Hopefully it will be Sync again soon though!

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 years ago

Jerboa is the way to go

[–] ghariksforge 8 points 2 years ago

I just tried Jerboa and it looks pretty good: https://f-droid.org/packages/com.jerboa/

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Just signed up from Kbin to give it ago. Jerboa working nicely.

Kbin hasn't got an app which really sucks.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

Also want an app for kbin, but for the moment it is possible to "install" the web page via the mobile browser.
It will get a separate icon that way and you can put it on your home screen or in a folder. Not perfect, but at least something!
Open kbin in the browser and search your browser menu for the install option. For example, in Firefox it is hidden in the three dot menu.

Nevertheless, I also hope for an app soon.

[–] woozy 6 points 2 years ago

thunder looks cool, but just like jerboa it is in early alpha, they can be a bit unstable, for the time being i'll personally stick to the web browser.

[–] danielfgom 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Use the web app. It works very well.

[–] Noedel 11 points 2 years ago

It keeps loading random posts to the top of the page while I'm scrolling. I know this is a known bug... But the website is basically unusable.

[–] armrods 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Trying Jerboa right now, don't like it.

All text fields show as password fields, no dictionary, submitting a comment is slow af.

Android 14 beta 3

[–] phil299 4 points 2 years ago

Maybe beta is your issue I have none of your issues
