So I am out with my family for Father's Day and we passed a church who had:

"What's your favorite Bible verse? Post it on our Facebook."

And it got me to wondering how they would react if someone started posting all of the verses from their storybook that specifically call out the behavior of modern Christians. All the ones about welcoming immigrants and providing shelter and care for the poor, or deriding capitalism. Wonder what would happen if people did that en masse? I almost want to write a bot to go through and do it.

That's too good to have to search:

32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need

Nice. That should be enough to give some of them aneurysms.

[–] Adalast 9 points 5 months ago

Oh... I like that one.

[–] FlyingSquid 31 points 5 months ago (1 children)

2 Corinthians 8:14 (NIV) At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality,

Oh dear. Those Christians based their whole religion on communism!

This might help https://skepticsannotatedbible.com/processlong.php?cid=5&pub=1

Still saying they were holding out their hands with a cheesy grin everytime they talked about money.

Like Joel Osteen. “It’s hard for rich men to get to heaven, so buy me another private jet. The new model.”

[–] FlyingSquid 3 points 5 months ago

I suppose, but it's also very similar to "from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs."

I am reminded of the Military Voices Initiative in which the US Army encouraged people to share their best army experiences on (Pre-X) Twitter. Incoming tweets told tales like My commanding officer hosed me so I'd have to serve a full eight year term but wouldn't get my college fund or I was serial raped by four guys in my unit and when I tried to report it I was given a general discharge.

[–] CascadianGiraffe 13 points 5 months ago

General Discharge is the name of my cover band. It's mostly big brass covers of Sex Pistols songs.

[–] Maggoty 3 points 5 months ago

Oh it's so much much better than that though. They titled a Facebook post, "How has military service impacted your life?"

They got everything from gold star families cursing them to rape stories. Completely backfired.

Leviticus 19:13-16 (NIV)

'Do not defraud or rob your neighbor. “ 'Do not hold back the wages of a hired worker overnight.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I'd mention the one about giving daughters to be gang raped, but honestly I think that would just reinforce current behaviors. I think the collective meh would be more horrifying than the quote.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 5 months ago

There's a part of me that thinks that conservatives would be unfazed by this since they really don't treat women right anyway

All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

@Adalast
Exodus 21, 20-21

20 “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.

[–] CaptainSpaceman 11 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

How about if your dad gets passed out naked drunk and you see him, you must become a slave for the rest of your life

Genesis something or other with Noah iirc

[–] clockwork_octopus 10 points 5 months ago (1 children)

What’s that one that says something about smashing the little ones on the rocks?

[–] [email protected] 11 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

Psalms 137:9 Happy is the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks

[–] clockwork_octopus 2 points 5 months ago

Ah yes, that’s the one! Thanks!

The problem with this one is that while it proves that it has more smut than literally any book they are banning, it also is a direct support of their attacks on sex workers, which I would rather be able to refute as well.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago

It does, the whole verse is horrible. Basically says because of her ways, god sent the men from all the nations she hasn't slept with to be with her. He had Abraham kill all of his sons so not too surprising I suppose.

Matthew 25:41-46 is a favorite of mine

[–] [email protected] 14 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:

I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

a lot will just pretend they were doing it like that all along and then go and do the exact opposite again

[–] AGD4 5 points 5 months ago

But it's okay as long as they repent next week or during confessional.

Psalm 137:9

[–] Maggoty 3 points 5 months ago

One of two reactions from my experience doing similar stuff. Either they pretend they are living up to those ideals or they threaten you with violence. There is no option where they realize they are the bad guy.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago

Matthew 6:5-6 is always a good choice

[–] Thcdenton 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Isaiah 66:11 ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

[–] Adalast 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Wait, if I am reading this right it is saying that Mary's tits should be an open tap for anyone who wants a drink?

[–] Thcdenton 2 points 5 months ago
[–] [email protected] -4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Why though? What would be the point except make a lot of people mad for no reason except your personal amusement. Just seems mean.

You won't convert anyone that way

[–] Bezzelbob 9 points 5 months ago (1 children)

except for your own personal amusement

Isn't this the reason for everything in life

[–] [email protected] -2 points 5 months ago

Yeah, but I think it's more important to not be mean. But you do you I guess.
