In all fairness, we should all be dialing down the rhetoric. Fanning the flames either direction is a dangerous game we shouldn't be playing.
The point is that the right has been guilty of violent rhetoric. The "violent rhetoric" on the left has been saying fascism is bad and needs to be defeated.
They are the ones fanning the flames and then saying "hey we should all stop fanning the flames". It's ridiculous.
Have you already forgotten that immediately after the Trump v. United States SCOTUS ruling there were a bunch of posts and comments saying Biden should have Trump assassinated and call it official business?
You could say they were satire, but a casual observer can't tell for sure.
No one sane was seriously calling for his assassination. They were appeals to absurdity showing why the ruling was assinine.
And look at how some people are suggesting we should do that.
Check the modlog for the news and politics communities over the last few days. It's there. People have been frothing at the mouth with all kinds of suggestions I will not repeat.
I say again: we all need to chill a bit. I hate that this sounds like I'm defending the right (I'm not). Emotions, tensions, and rhetoric are very inflamed right now, and celebrating, praising, cheering on, or defending political violence of any kind is not what we need to be doing.
So, the right is correct for once, albeit for very wrong / bad faith reasons.
WWII could have been prevented if the german left was less chill in the '30s.
Fuck that. Politicians should fear the people. Bring back the guillotine.
"Violence is never the answer," says country founded through violent revolution.
"You have to fight fascism with ideas," says country that fought fascism with weapons of war.
Username checks out.
Go away.
Where can one find the modlog? I just see the one tied to my account.
Bottom right on desktop, not sure on other platforms.
This makes me glad I didn't do anything special for Independence Day. Don't want to be celebrating political violence.
I mean, this is like saying the average household and BP should be dialing down their emissions. You're not wrong, but BP is the way bigger problem and they have benefited enormously from being a problem, while households are just trying to find a way to live in the world BP built.
Nah bruh, I’m 100% good with the fascists understanding that they have no monopoly on violence.
That's how things get done mostly. Make sure they know we're down with violence too. The black panthers didn't just ask nicely, they also carried big guns with them.
Even ghandi didn't fully achieve what he did with 0 violence. What's never mentioned is that there were other groups out there who agreed with him but didn't agree with his methods. Those other groups also put pressure with both violence and the threat of. That pressure of violence helped ghandi do what he did.
The Powers That Be only capitulated to MLK because they knew Malcolm X was the alternative.
Yea it seems odd that there's this push to not use the threat of violence to push back. I'm not the conspiracy type usually but I wouldn't be surprised if it was some sort of effort from certain groups to make sure we don't push back.
Part of it is neoliberal privilege, and part of it is corporate/private social media owners (including owners of Lemmy instances) being incentivized to censor anything too spicy for fear of advertiser pushback and/or FBI raids. The fact that in the Internet era all our common forums for expressing ourselves are increasingly privatized has a huge chilling effect on freedom of speech.
