Director is really chill and down to earth, one of the best I've had in my working career and apparently they are consolidating a bunch of different divisions and regions into one... They said there's a "bloodbath coming" Because They are consolidating across the company into one specific region and department. But there's no way of knowing who will be affected

Hey there, I was wondering if I'm the only one who feels like this or not.

So I grew up thinking that we people all look different and never had a concept of something such as "white" and "black" people.

But since I got in touch with American culture I saw in the last years that a lot of people make such a big thing out of whether someone is "black" or "white" and what their ethnicity is.

It feels like it's to the point where they make this define their core identity as if it's very relevant how people look and how bright/dark their skin is as if this changes their personality.

It's like so many of these people constantly bring this up to the point where it's brainwashing and they literally even use racial slur as slang that was used in the past to devalue and enslave people based on their skin tone.

Since I experienced this it made me very uncomfortable since I never had this concept before and now I constantly have to obsessively think about it and feel like it's manipulating me and these people still bring it up all the time.

I think this is driving me insane cause I never would think about humans so strongly because of their skin or something since it simply isn't relevant and it just feels wrong but I can't escape it since so many people continue to make such a big deal out of it.

From what I understand, the military high command supported Yoon even after the assembly voted down martial law. If that's true, didn't he have everything to go through with the coup?

Fro some reason without paying much attention to the time duration it took a friend to reply I always end up replying within the same amount of time as my friends without thinking much of it, then I’ll see the time they sent the message.

If a friend replies in an hour I typically respond probably subconsciously in an hour (plus or minus 10 minutes), then realize it took them an hour after I respond. Idk why.

Is this something "normal"? Does anyone else do this?

I was scrolling and saw this video of people dancing, showing different moves throughout the years, including recent ones. I know people "dance," like, generally move to a beat, but, like, having moves and stuff, where do you do that? Is the idea to ease the moves into your own dance "repertoire?" As in, do you expect to see people milly rock, like unprompted?

This is definitely a bit of a stupid question... but methinks this happens to a good number of immigrants. Asking because there is a bit of a funny philosophical debate here:

• Technically the second language is not "native" by virtue of you not growing up with it
• But you speak it better than your native language, so skill-wise it is "native"

So do you have "native" language skills, or would you consider yourself simply highly "fluent" at the second language?

I'm thinking about getting back to uni to get my Masters and later a PhD. The thing is, I'm out of academia for more than 20 years, and completely at loss. I don't quite know where to begin. Any tips?

It's wearing me down.

Due to reasons I'm a nurse.

Possibly not the best choice for an introvert who wants to work and go home, but it is what it is.

I had a conversation with management and they told me I don't open up, which is fair and true and told me to be more empathetic with my coworkers.

Except that I can't and I don't care about most of them. As said, I just want to work and go home. I consider most of them childish, gossipy and immature. Of course I didn't tell management this.

I told them an extrovert is not who I am, if you force me to open up, I cannot disconnect during my pause and I'm going to work worse. I like doing my pause only when I've done my job whereas my other coworkers do their pause sooner, no matter if patients are cared for, which I don't understand but whatever. Some people including my manager think I do that to avoid them. No, I just want to do my job before I relax. And I relax alone.

They believe this is a choice. When my coworkers talk and talk, they overload me and I just want to work and go home.

I'm constantly misunderstood. My job shouldn't be to give attention to my coworkers or to management, yet here I am.

I'm applying for jobs elsewhere but I'm afraid I'm going to have this problem wherever I go, simply because most people in nursing are gossips and enjoy attention. This is what I fear the most, having to constantly change workplaces due to perceived slights and office theatrics I don't want to play and I'm so not good at playing.

Masking up and creating a workplace bubbly persona would destroy my mental health. Too much overload.

I'm not in a position where I can study something else, cause nothing interests me that much and I need money now.

Ideally I'd find a workplace that respects who I am without incurring a heavy financial penalty, but don't know what nursing option would give me that.

What I also don't want to do is to create a job interview persona, because sooner or later the real me will surface, a person extroverts don't want to work with. I'd like to go to a job interview telling them exactly this, that I'm not there to socialize but to work and go home and that I want to do my job but this doesn't mean I'm letting them exploit me (giving me a bigger workload than to other nurses for example).

I want to come clean to any future employer about this. Should I?

This has been a long standing conspiracy theory amongst right wing talk show hosts and other people. Basically the claim is that FEMA will imprison lots of people especially those with far right views using a emergency as a pretext. This conspiracy theory has been widely debunked already.

The interesting thing is now something like the conspiracy theory may happen in real life except ran by ICE instead of FEMA. I'm curious how people who previously propagated this conspiracy theory feel about Trump's plan for a mass deportation. If you know anyone who's into this conspiracy theory would you be able to ask them their thoughts on the FEMA camps and then bring up Trump's mass deportation plan. I'm curious how'd they'd react. Let's not assume because everyone is different. are there days where you only train certain parts of your body / only do certain exercises because you simply don't have the time for a full workout?

my ideal workout means stair climbing, running-walking and stretching. It can well last 2 hours.

Some days I don't have enough time to do all that. Would it be better to do less of each kind of exercising or just to fixate on one kind?

As the title says, I was wondering if lemmings would know what this kind of music is called / genre'd? They differ from their performers normal style considerably, but I like the smooth and and vaguely positive melancholic feel of these songs. I think both of these songs share kind of the same sound.

I've been a metal head since my early tweens, for way too many years, so I'm kind of wading to uncharted waters for me.

When Microwaves first came out they were huge but with a tiny cooking area and they were not affordable, and were mostly in business kitchens and a few restaurants. I would love a freeze dryer but the cheapest I have seen is $1600 and they only have 4 small trays.

So many people put their laptop right on their stomach while using it.

When I measure the energy coming off of my laptop, the different types of electrical energy, it's somewhat high. I almost always put it on a pillow before putting it on my stomach. I know many devices are FCC approved, but I don't know if the FCC takes hours of use on a stomach into account.

Have researchers ruled out this as a possible cause of the increased rate of colorectal cancers?

(Also is the flouride in my water making me see conspiracies that don't really exist?)

I've just been wondering about this recently and there are so many smart people on lemmy I figured someone here would have a smart opinion on this. I know the prevailing theory is colorectal cancers are possibly due to more ultra-processed foods, but has anyone thought about laptops? Is this illogical as a possible cause? It may be that the energy levels aren't high enough to be a cause or that the colon is too far away from a laptop on a stomach to impact anything.

Every time I get a snarky, rude and shitty response from a user. 9 times out of 10 it is from users with hundreds to thousands of pointless karma points. My best guess is that it has really all gone to their heads and because of their high count, they think they're speaking the golden words of the gospel with every comment that they make.

That nothing can touch them and that they're validated so they can't be argued against.

I had a job. The company didn’t realize that they actually had to sell product to stay in business. Almost all of the workforce was let go or furloughed. I’ve been unemployed for over a month now.

I’ve filled out dozens upon dozens of job apps, starting even before I lost my job. I have my resume public on job listings sites for employers and hiring agencies to find, and I’ve sent my resume to employers and hiring agencies directly. I look through the listings on job boards for each day, mostly limiting my search to a wage that would allow me to make ends meet at home. I’ve solicited and implemented advice from resume design experts. I’ve had one in-person interview, a few preliminary phone interviews, and a couple of message conversations between recruiters and myself. The one in-person interview I had would not have paid enough for my monthly expenses and I was overqualified for the position; they decided against hiring me. I had another interview scheduled and confirmed via a hiring agency’s AI text bot and a human agent’s text; I drove to the scheduled interview place and time and they had no idea that I was supposed to be interviewed. All other communication has either been flat-out rejection or just left me hanging.

I have a Bachelor’s of Science degree from a top 25 ranked university in the US. I have no criminal record. I do have multiple disabilities but they are generally mitigable enough to not affect my work. I have references of my (now) former boss and a (now) former coworker who both praise my impact and aptitude in the factory and office workplace. I’m evidently overqualified for positions that don’t require higher experiences and I’m underqualified for nearly everything else; I can’t get experience in most niche or broad fields because nearly every position requires these experiences to have already been met. To my mind, Ban has always meant permanent.
"You're banned from this place! You'll never be allowed in again!"

While I've always thought of Suspend as being temporary.
"You're being suspended from school for 1 week, over fighting."

When I hear someone mention they were banned my reaction is: "Holy shit! WTF did you do to earn that!" Then I find out it was only for a day or three: "Oh... That's not a Ban! That's minor. Go touch grass. You'll be fine."

I've been banned from subreddits and communities a few times. At least once I never even noticed because it was so short.

How is it a Ban if I didn't even notice?

Why did Ban in online forums and games, come to mean temporary?

Is it simply an example of the intensification of language? To make something mundane, seem more severe than it is?

Does it bother anyone else? Or am I alone here?

I enjoy deleting my old posts and comments, but it's lot of work doing it individually, especially with comments. For other platforms there are apps you can login with, then delete old or all content, but I can't find one for Lemmy. Does such a thing even exist?
