The Texas Supreme Court on Friday night put on hold a judge’s ruling that approved an abortion for a pregnant woman whose fetus has a fatal diagnosis, throwing into limbo an unprecedented challenge to one of the most restrictive bans in the U.S.

The order by the all-Republican court came more than 30 hours after Kate Cox, a 31-year-old mother of two from the Dallas area, received a temporary restraining order from a lower court judge that prevents Texas from enforcing the state’s ban in her case.

In a one-page order, the court said it was temporarily staying Thursday’s ruling “without regard to the merits.” The case is still pending.

I appreciate this woman subjecting herself as a test case for these draconian laws, but at this point, I'd advise her to take a nice completely unrelated vacation to a west coast state for a while.

Of course, ole Kenny boy will try to prosecute any mode of transportation she would attempt to use at this point.

God I hate this timeline.

She'd also face charges coming back.

Possibly even if she doesn't come back.

I don't know if blue states would extradite her though. Many would not. So maybe she could uproot her whole family and life to leave and make a new home. However, she's super high profile in the Google now; any time she left the state or got pulled over for speeding or something, she'd be vulnerable to harassment. And if Republicans do this to the whole country... Ugh.

I hope she comes back and they decide to make a nice white lady a political prisoner. They’ll get murdered. Maybe at the polls, if they’re lucky.

I propose that anyone getting in the way of an abortion for a child that would be born dead or suffering gets to have their dick or lips ripped off with a wheat thresher. You aren't saving the child, you aren't saving the mother, you aren't saving the doctor you just want to watch a woman in pain and know you caused that pain. Can't even think of a suitable insult because none of them seem sufficient

While I do agree with this sentiment, I would change one thing about the first sentence you wrote:

“I propose that anyone getting in the way of an abortion —— gets to have ..”

In my opinion there is no need for the child to have a serious condition before an abortion would be permitted.

If both the mother and the doctor decide it is for the best, that should be the end of it.

I’d like to end this comment with a quote after reading too much US news:

“Land of the free? Whoever told you that is your enemy”

If ~~both~~ the mother ~~and the doctor~~ decides it is for the best, that should be the end of it.

My point was of the few somewhat philosophically valid arguments in opposition to abortion none exist in this case. If arguing in good faith one might sincerely believe that people have been convinced to kill innocent babies every time an abortion occurs and they want to stop such obvious cruelty. But this child is already dead essentially, by a fluke of nature this child was not meant to live. The true cruelty in this case would be to sentence this woman carry a lump of dead tissue and dark memories to term for the crime of having a healthy reproductive system

I’m not a physically violent person, but this is one of those rare moments where do find myself wondering when someone (not me) will start exercising their 2d Amendment rights (the way gun nuts see it) against Paxton and anyone else who is willing to make women legally second class citizens. I think the joy of seeing Paxton’s head turn into red mist on liveleaks would greatly outweigh the very strong tendency I have to barf at gore.

Granted it would open the floodgates of right wing terror and would be accelerating the coming of whatever horrors are down the road, so not a good thing to happen in reality. But FUCK

Granted it would open the floodgates of right wing terror

It would, but I generally agree with the principal that one's actions should never be dictated by fear of a conservative's response, because whatever they do will be something they were going to do anyway.

Fuck you, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. You pompous, self-rightous piece of shit.

He’s a pompous, self-righteous felonious piece of shit.

Hopefully this poor woman doesn’t die before all of this state-caused mess is resolved. But more importantly, hopefully all women and rational thinking men remember this come voting time.

I had sudden visions of her being gunned down by state troopers at a road block, as she tries to drive to a state that hasn’t outlawed healthcare.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago

The sad part is that this is a legitimate possibility. They'll gun down her and her unviable fetus in order to protect their lives.
