I hope the republicans pick anybody but Trump, but just try to imagine them picking a first generation Indian American woman for president. That sounds like a deafening amount of cognitive dissonance.
Haley was born Nimarata Nikki Randhawa
She was called slurs multiple times by Republican state-level politicians while she was governor of SC. And that was before they all started saying the quiet parts out loud.
One of her primary opponents is Vivek Ramaswamy.
Two first-generation Indians are contenders. That's wild to me
Except neither of them are really contenders, numbers wise.
Haley is getting the nomination because the number 1 is likely going to be in prison by the time the convention rolls around and the number 2 has made the people funding the election very uncomfortable through his lack of charisma.
I mean Trump's gonna be the nominee, at least at first, almost certainly. I just find it fascinating who Republicans think "the good ones" are
Don't they mean Nimrata Haley? Or are Republicans allowed to use alternative names while American citizens can't?
Edit: Nimarata
It's Nimarata, and could you imagine if everyone just started calling her that instead. Republicans would lose their minds that people are not respecting her wishes to be called something different.
Because "Gilgamesha" wasn't feminine enough for her parents, when picking out names? 😶
She's Indian. Pretty bigoted to make fun of that, despite what you think of her politics
This is Lemmy. Racism against Asians is a-okay, even encouraged. I asked someone to stop making fun of M Night Shyamalan's name and got downvoted to oblivion. Just like Reddit lol
Do you even know who Nimrod was? Take your virtue signaling down the block, kiddo. FFS.
I'm Indian so not quite virtue signaling, kiddo. FFS
-
So, you don't know who that was.
-
Necro much?
Sounds like nimrod-a
Yes but she goes by Nikki. Her full name is known pretty widely, just like Joe instead of Joseph Biden.
They'd have a problem if the preferred name was Nicolas though
Trouble is: Koch brothers are very much into the same things as Trump is but they want to be able to control POTUS not having to deal with lose cannon that shoots everything and everyone and is only predictable in his unpredictability. So I'd think that the same policies would be pushed forward but without as much drama and publicity. In the end everyone will end up just as screwed.
They legitimately want Ayn Rand for president, they'd dig her up in an instant if they got their hands on a necromancer.
0 regulation government with handouts for them and none for us as their wet dreams. We have them to thank for the "Freedumb Caucus"
Didn't she die on public assistance?
yes :
she had to recognize that there were exceptions to her theory. So that started our politial discussions. From there on - with gusto - we argued all the time the initial argument was on greed. She had to see that there was such a thing as greed in this world. Doctors could cost an awful lot more money than books earn
she gave me her power of attorney to deal with all matters having to do with health and Social Security. Whether she agreed or not is not the issue -- Evva Pryor, legal consultant
In the end, she didn't accept Social Security, but pragmatically allowed Evva Pryor to sign her up under a Power of Attorney, apparently.
This way she got to cling to her naive beliefs about brutal anti-socialism AND not suffer for them.
"Benefits for me but not thee" as well as avoiding karmic justice, seems to be the hallmark of the modern American Republican, and I can see why she's the poster-child. The fact she took what she describes as 'hand-outs' gives her closet a skeleton the remaining Darth Koch can use to destroy her when Zombie Ayn Rand is no longer valuable.
But reading the excerpt, it's funny that this "tax and hand-outs" diatribe doesn't hold water when it's not "you being paid by these handouts and then paying to live" but instead "the state provides your first 5 basic needs (food, clothing, shelter, belonging, safety) for you based on voters' decisions" since there is no money given TO the individual. But that's just an observation based on the pittance I've read this morning; I don't want to get into some argument with a Rand fan about what the Prophet really meant.
She was a piece of shit and a coward, based on what I gather from your reply. Thanks for sharing.
Happened to a lot of conservative groups. Set the fertilizer perfectly for a plant they did not want.
If I remember right the Koch brothers didn't support trump in 2016 and he still won. It'll be interesting to see what happens in the general election if Trump gets the nomination.
.
You're correct they didn't support Trump and instead focused on the lower races.
She is awful and this endorsement is further evidence of that.
Do you prefer Trump, DeSantis or Ramaswamy? There are no good candidates on the Republican side. Unfortunately, one of them is going to be the nominee and whoever it is has a decent chance of becoming president. As bad as she is, I don’t think she’s the worst Republican.
She's the best choice as far as those running goes.
It's a low bar, but I'd be more okay with her over any of the others.
Project 2025 would still go into effect but be under her. NO SHE IS HORRIBLE ALL THE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES ARE HORRIBLE DON'T VOTE GOP.
I don't plan to vote for her or any other Republican candidate. But there's going to be a candidate and I see her as the lesser of the evils. While I don't agree with her positions or particularly like her, I acknowledge that she is at least qualified to hold office and believe that she will leave after completing a term, which is more than I can say about the other candidates. We don't always get the candidate we want and that's part of democracy. It's ok to disagree on policy as long as we can agree on what it means to be Americans.
DeSantis is a hack and I do not believe he has demonstrated either good character or an ability to effectively govern. He relies on a Republican super-majority in the state legislature to ram his agenda through. Sooner or later you have to work with the opposing party to get things done and he has never had to do that. He can't expect a Republican super-majority if he's in the White House and I don't think he has the political chops to work with Congress. Hell, his former colleagues in Congress say he basically ghosted them once he became governor. He's also a racist asshole and hates LGBT people.
Ramaswamy is a hateful prick who is good at getting people riled up. That has nothing to do with governing. I don't believe he is qualified in any way, shape or form.
Trump is a traitor. His actions on 1/6 are an affront to every person who has ever worked to preserve or better our country or our way of life. He literally tried to deprive all Americans - even his own supporters - of a free and fair election. Ironically, many of his supporters consider themselves patriots who believe in free and fair elections. He has deprived them of their faith in our democratic systems as much as he has anyone else, and, in the process, has created an awful schism between Americans. I can't think of a worse criminal in our nation's history. It is unfathomable that he is considered a candidate for any public office. His rightful place should be on the gallows. His trials, eventual conviction, and imprisonment is a future far better than what he deserves.
Yeah in terms of policy the specific GOP candidate isn't very influential, they're more like the brand of the party, and embody the politics of the time rather than define them.
Trump and Biden are historically unpopular opponents and it's likely Haley would sweep the floor against Biden, as sad as that is. "Unnamed Democrat" has +10 points over Biden in swing states already, if either party manages to kick their current leaders then it might force the other's hand. The US would enter a post-Trump political era if that were the case.
she's their token "person of diversity"
I wonder if she's aware she'll be in a cage too after her usefullness runs out.
This is the best summary I could come up with:
The powerful political network led by conservative billionaire Charles Koch endorsed Nikki Haley for president on Tuesday, as it looks to stop Donald Trump from being the Republican nominee.
“AFP Action is proud to throw our full support behind Nikki Haley, who offers America the opportunity to turn the page on the current political era, to win the Republican primary and defeat Joe Biden next November,” Emily Seidel, senior adviser of the group, wrote in a memo.
“Haley will have the full weight and scope of AFP Action’s unmatched grassroots army and resources to help her earn the support of Americans to become the next President of the United States of America.”
“Additionally, in the coming days, we’ll launch extensive mail, digital, and connected television campaigns to supplement those on-the-ground efforts.”
AFP Action framed its support as an effort to move on past the current political era, a message that aligns with Haley’s calls for a new generational leader.
The group is announcing its pick later than initially planned, underscoring the uncertainty that has hung over the race to become Trump’s main challenger — with DeSantis starting the year in the strongest position and Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) at one point capturing growing attention from donors.
