Summary

Vincent Lemark Burrell, 57, was sentenced to 475 years in prison for running a large-scale dogfighting ring in Paulding County, Georgia.

Authorities discovered 107 malnourished pit bulls, many tied to trees or heavy chains without food, water, or shelter. Some dogs had teeth forcibly removed or severe scarring from fights.

Investigators also found training equipment and dogfighting paraphernalia. Burrell was convicted on 93 counts of dogfighting and 10 counts of animal cruelty.

All rescued dogs were placed in rehabilitation centers for care and recovery.

Well deserved!

It's scary that Adam Britton (the biggest scum that ever walked on earth) only got 10.5 years, he should get same sentence like this guy.

[–] Rhoeri 0 points 2 hours ago

There needs to be a way to extend the dudes life so he can experience every single one of those years.

And it should be solitary.

A bit off topic, but that is the first time I have seen the word "paraphernalia" used for something other than drugs.

Also, happy this fucker is locked up.

[–] P1nkman 5 points 12 hours ago

The suspect was caught with murder paraphernalia.

In this recipe, we need to use the following kitchen paraphernalia.

It's fun using paraphernalia in other uses than drugs!

475 years, really? Animal cruelty is abhorrent, but... really?

For comparison, the longest sentence for the J6 insurrection, in which a full-blown coup was attempted and police officers died, was 22 years. And then annuled.

Justice is broken. It should be 22 years for the dogs, 475 years for the murderous coup and no pardons.

so the j6 rioters should have been punished harder, this is still a reasonable ammount of time.

Elijah McClain:

Randy Roedema, an Aurora police officer at the time, was sentenced to 14 months in a county jail. Jeremy Cooper, the paramedic working with Mr. Cichuniec, was sentenced to four years of probation with 14 months of work-release.

Strangely courts care more about dogs than humans, let us not forget about war crimes committed by soldiers and they don't get any punishment example My Lai massacre.

Welcome to the United States of America anno 2025.

[–] LordWiggle 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The difference is that this guy is black.

I'm happy animal cruelty is taken serious though.

I just don't understand how dumb the American justice system is. Is there a judge expecting this guy to live for this long? Why give more then a life sentence, since when are Americans Buddhists?

[–] GroundedGator 3 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Should you be reincarnated as anything larger than a house cat, you shall report to the bureau of prisons and surrender yourself.

[–] LordWiggle 1 points 1 hour ago

That's racist. Why should a dog report and get imprisoned while a guinea pig can go free? Guinea pigs are assholes, they should be imprisoned too. No matter previous-life convictions. I bet cops automatically reincarnate as guinea pigs. They're called guinea "pig" for a reason.

Although I do not agree with cops being called pigs. Pigs are intelligent and lovely creatures. Cops are racist assholes. Calling them pandas suits much better. Fuck pandas, I wish they would all die.

Cats, ok, they should not be imprisoned, instead they imprison us without most of us knowing it. All hail our great and mighty feline overlords.

In addition, animal abuse happens constantly at like, meat and animal products factories, but that's perfectly ok for some reason

Idk, I find it weird how the law is selective on this kinda stuff

[–] CleoTheWizard 4 points 11 hours ago

I think because the intention is to hurt the animal by definition and produces no useful biproduct. But that’s my guess.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

So, two points. First, it sounds like he's expected to get a reduction on appeal:

https://www.animals24-7.org/2025/02/02/dogfighter-gets-475-years-more-than-all-other-perps-since-vick-combined/

Record tough sentence of Vincent Lemark Burrell is almost certain to be reduced on appeal

Second, newspapers are often kind of loose in their description and describe a cumulative sentence in years, as it sounds more-exciting, when it consists of multiple terms to be served concurrently rather than consecutively and effectively is a lot less than that. I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case here.

Vincent Lemark Burrell, 57, was given the weighty sentence in Paulding County after a jury found him guilty of 93 counts of dog fighting and 10 counts of cruelty to animals, the Paulding District Attorney’s Office said on Friday.

So he's got 93 counts of dog fighting, and 10 counts of cruelty to animals.

The article says that this is in Georgia.

goes looking for Georgia sentencing guidelines

https://law.justia.com/codes/georgia/title-17/chapter-10/article-1/section-17-10-10/

(a) Where at one term of court a person is convicted on more than one indictment or accusation, or on more than one count thereof, and sentenced to imprisonment, the sentences shall be served concurrently unless otherwise expressly provided therein.

(b) Where a person is convicted on more than one indictment or accusation at separate terms of court, or in different courts, and sentenced to imprisonment, the sentences shall be served concurrently, one with the other, unless otherwise expressly provided therein.

(c) This Code section shall apply alike to felony and misdemeanor offenses.

(d) This Code section shall govern and shall be followed by the Department of Corrections in the computation of time that sentences shall run.

It sounds like this was a single court session and multiple counts. So I'd guess that (a) probably takes effect, and I'd guess that he has a metric shit-ton of terms of prison to serve, but he serves them concurrently.

[–] expatriado 11 points 1 day ago

I'm ok with a 50% reduction on the 475-year sentence

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The dogs shouldn't serve any time, IMHO. Maybe just a fine.

[–] whostosay 10 points 1 day ago

Are you suggesting these dogs forgo 20+ pets with a minimum of 4 scratches right now?

Get the fuck out of here

[–] bitflag 4 points 1 day ago

Agreed, some murders and rapists get less than 5% of this sentence. The issue is consecutive jail terms where one "big crime" is cut into many crimes so that each adds to the total.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

They should put him in the ring with the 100 dogs the sick b#stard

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 hours ago

We should use zoo Lions, they need the excitement.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Those dogs have been through enough.

They should just chain him to a tree and leave him as he left the dog.

Let the dogs get love.

[–] yesman 1 points 14 hours ago

Let the dogs get love.

They're all upstate on a big farm I'm sure.

[–] leadore 20 points 1 day ago

475 years sounds like a lot until you realize that's in dog years.

[–] Brunbrun6766 29 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Well deserved, if his heart stops put his ass on life support and keep him alive longer. Scum of the earth treating dogs like that or any animal. May he rot in prison.

Edit: I am not typically a prisons kind of person, but for animal cruelty, how fucking sick in the head do you have to be to do that.

[–] theangryseal 10 points 20 hours ago

If you grow up butchering pigs, you don’t tend to be bummed about pigs getting butchered. You know what I’m saying?

My dad took me to cockfights when I was a kid. The first time I seen a rooster fall over dead it broke my heart. The 100th time didn’t move me at all. It was just a normal part of life. I fed them, I cleaned their cages, I picked them up and played with them, and then I watched them either kill or be killed. It was like skipping a rock across a pond by the end of it. Just a normal thing to me.

I’m not defending the guy, but people used to throw humans into arenas and make them fight to the death. It takes a shift in culture to end things like this.

Sure, this guy should be punished, but the goal should ultimately be about making this absurd in circles where it isn’t.

I remember a few times when people were arrested over cockfighting after it was made illegal (long past my time being around it. It was probably 1998 or so the last time I seen a fight. I became a teenager and didn’t want be a part of something so barbaric) and everyone was just appalled that the people were arrested. They just couldn’t comprehend why it was illegal.

I guess him being jailed could help end the bullshit. After a few people went to jail where I’m from, cockfighting just fizzled out around here. Nearly everyone I knew had game chickens in pens behind their house when I was growing up. Now if anyone has chickens it’s just for eggs. No one does it anymore.

I knew chickens are living things too, but it seems so much worse doing it to dogs. Probably because I can relate to dogs as far as the way we handle pain and all that. I’m not a dog person but I live with two dogs and they handle emotions and pain very much like we do.

I think the jail term is too long. Should have been 375 years max
