this cartoon implies that liberal and progressive citizens are equally responsible for the lack of attention to the owner class, when they're the only ones criticizing and trying to rein in the 1% while at the same time trying to defend against incessant attacks on pretty much every part of their identity from the bleating moron maga lemmings

[–] horse_battery_staple 31 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Left and Right aren't a useful representation of a person's political beliefs. I don't think this cartoon is saying left and right are the same. I think it's saying that the billionaire class is using useful idiots to help separate the working class and keep them fighting amongst ourselves.

Absolutely push back against what you see as harmful patterns and always support and defend the rights of others. If you hear someone dehumanizing immigrants or LGBTQA+ or any at risk population of course speak up.

But also challenge the logic of that person. Ask them how they believe what they believe and who benefits. You're never going to reason someone out of a position they never reasoned themselves into, but you can learn the bullshit talking points they're being fed to head off those effects for someone else.

The only way we fight Fascism in this country will be to empower each other and engender support for anti fascist action. Build mutual aid in your community and be as involved as possible politically.

Mutual Aid Hub is a beautiful project — absolutely an URL to be shared and saved, thank you.

Progressives, maybe. But right after the Harris loss, I saw a flood of her liberal supporters deciding the LGBTQ caucus cost her the election.

[–] DougHolland 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Me too, especially the T. The manipulation is so everpresent, some of us manipulate ourselves.

[–] MutilationWave 4 points 5 days ago

We all manipulate ourselves and are manipulated constantly. It's about trying to recognize when it's happening and correct yourself. Or be open to people that are trying to help you correct yourself.

As a transwoman nothing frightened me more than being told that the rise of fascism was my fault for existing, even though I did everything to get the vote out for Kamela

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 days ago

Liberals don't want corporate tyranny and conservatives don't want government tyranny. How do we get people to realize they're the same thing?

Reminder: No one gave the slightest fuck about women's sports until the masses realized transpeople weren't just a "funny joke" in a 80's sex comedy.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil 15 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Women's basketball has exploded in the last few years, in large part because the NBA is finally seeing it as a money-maker on par with the men's pro-League. Same with women's soccer.

A lot of this has to do with sports, as a broad category of entertainment, still producing the kind of returns that legacy media - movies, tv serials, live music - struggle to replicate. A lot more has to do with women as an "untapped" demographic for the sports media industry. And then the pivot to Streaming means you get extra value from a continuous fresh series of live events with relatively low production costs (just like with reality TV).

I might argue that the trans-panic around women's sports is a direct consequence of this huge new effort to commodify the franchise. Trans-rights runs up against the specter of performance enhancing drugs in athletics, giving both state officials and league owners an excuse to aggressively regulate and censor their athletes.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I hate how professional sports and for-profit prisons are just the way we pretend we don't enslave black men and make them compete in gladiatorial arenas for our amusement.

I'm not a huge South Park fan, but sometimes they get it so right. Have you seen the one where they make crack babies fight like a game and big money gets interested?

Cartman goes to the head of the NCAA in character as an old time plantation slavemaster and keeps getting confused that the NCAA boss doesn't realize he's a slaveowner too.

Damn it's painfully good.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

South Park is very hit or miss, but I mean that in the best way possible, yet also the worst.

When they hit, it's a god damn homerun that smashes through the stratosphere and takes out a god damn military satellite

When they miss.... well, I start telling my closest loved ones about my e621 search history, because that's less embarrassing by comparison.

I've seen the restrictions they put College Athletes on, people here on visas have less fucking restrictions. Former convicted felons have more rights, even if they're not living in a "Ban the box" state. It's like they're TRYING to break their spirits in addition to maximizing profit. I mean the latter sure, but the former too? Why? It's no wonder crazy people believe the country is ruled by Reptilian Demiurges farming the planet for negative emotional energy, because I can't think of much else they could do differently if they were.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 days ago

Wait we're pretending? I thought it was blatantly obvious that's what we're doing and our society just decided to be OK with it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Wait... "Performance enhancing drugs" was a sham?

[–] UnderpantsWeevil 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The concern-trolling over it was. Abuse continues to be rampant in professional (and amateur) athletics. Reporting tends to either fixate on the Bad Countries Cheating or explode into a "Last year's players cheated! This won't happen again!" moral panic after too many high profile athletes start succumbing to symptoms of chronic misuse.

Trans-athletes (and maliciously accused cis-athletes) get swept up in both. You're either "cheating" by having the wrong set of chromosomes or you're accused of cheating because you don't look Trad enough.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I know that they found Lance Armstrong was cheating simply because everyone else in the Tour De France was too and they knew it wasn't possible for him to have won fairly if they cheated and still lost. So they mass-reported him for dosing, testing him to "prove" he wasn't, and found he was.

I hate people with no self-awareness. Like if you're cheating too, don't say shit.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil 2 points 4 days ago

I believe he was able to disguise some of his performance enhancement behind his chemotherapy, which is why he so drastically improved after coming back from testicular cancer.

I hate people with no self-awareness. Like if you’re cheating too, don’t say shit.

No point in staying silent if you still lose. Time to throw the front-runner under the bus and make way for the rest of the cheats.

[–] LovableSidekick 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Found someone unfamiliar with the history of women's sports (knowledge of memes doesn't count).

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I admit I'm not, but I imagine it's rooted in misogyny like everything that involves women in this country because I am having a case of derealization and I now see the strings that are pulled to put on this nightmare puppet show. LET ME OUT OF THE MATRIX!

[–] LovableSidekick 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

I feel like seemingly evil behavior is usually just conditioned behavior. Ignorance and misunderstanding are more common than active malice. People feel threatened by something that contradicts the world they were raised to think was normal and correct, so they push it away. In somebody's eyes this makes them hateful and evil, but they're really just scared. Very few people in this world are in any position to call the shots. Most of just do what we think we're supposed to.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

That tracks...

This is why I wish we lived in a world where God was real, then someone kind and wise would be running the show the way the show is supposed to be run. It could all be apart of the plan.

[–] LovableSidekick 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

You're not alone in that wish. We just can't let the fact that there's no plan and no Daddy protecting us make us feel overwhelmed and powerless. Sadly I think this attitude was a tragic factor in the recent US election, when so many people couldn't get past none of the choices being good enough for them so they abstained in protest. Even if we're sick of choosing the lesser evil, we still have to or the greater evil wins. Equally true in a lot of personal life choices.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 6 days ago (1 children)

If these comments are any indicator, it’s working perfectly.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Yep. Hard to admit our reactions are their manipulations. Everyone things everyone but them is the puppet.

[–] VoterFrog 11 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (4 children)

Just because it's a manipulation doesn't mean it's always avoidable, though. Like Lex Luthor manipulates Superman by putting Lois Lane's life in danger. Letting Lois die isn't typically a real option. He's got no choice but to play the game because he's a moral person.

Are we supposed to just let LGBTQ people die so we can make inroads on the class war? I don't like it, but that's not a real option either.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 days ago

No, but we need to learn to work with people we disagree with, even if they disagree on very serious issues that are endangering people's lives. We need to keep having that debate while still working together on other issues.

Man, I hear that, but also... sides were chosen, and it's pretty clear what type of person someone is based on that choice. Half of us can be manipulated AND be selfish cunts at the same time.

Although I dislike that half and at times feel like fighting some of them, I would also still work with them to save ourselves from the ruling class if the opportunity were to arise.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I agree with all of that except fighting them. They are weak in mind and spirited and one should avoid attacking the weak. If they throw the first punch, defend oneself by means but they unlikely to actually do anything.

Despite their head cannon being the left always looks to the government to solve problem. At the heart of it all, the right are the ones desperately looking for the government to save them from their failed lives. Most of them are not interested, willing or able to fight for what they want. It's why they choose strongman personality cults.

[–] MutilationWave 2 points 5 days ago

Mostly agree. But it's canon, not cannon. A cannon is a big-ass gun. Sorry, I don't like myself either.

[–] Duamerthrax 15 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Ok, but one of those people will assault you if they think you're using the wrong bathroom.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago (3 children)

Only because they are a puppet, look at whose pulling the strings. (The right wing progaganda networks)

[–] [email protected] 12 points 6 days ago (1 children)

“They can’t help it, only the 1% have agency” isn’t going to ring true with anyone who’s actually been assaulted for using the ‘wrong’ bathroom.

Lemmy is small enough, and your moniker unique enough, I keep noticing your comments and nodding my head yes. If you're ever in Seattle, let's go bowling or something.

Yes, but who's responsibility is that? Push this meme in the right wing circles. It's preaching to the choir here.

[–] Allonzee 11 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Insert one of the capitalist's useful idiots in every discussion basically saying "Well I have food, water, and shelter, so I think my X social issue must be addressed before everyone having food, water, and shelter... or you're a bigot!" derailing every discussion, as the owner class intends, often devolving into arguments of "we can do both/all" when under this economy, we can't do shit as the owners will keep using their bully pulpits in for profit media and captured government to actively keep us divided and hating one another instead of looking up. If you think you can do anything under that, you'll be waiting till your grave.

Class war informs all other wars. Those are all battles under the class war. This is class occupation, with the oligarchs literally owning conflicting networks claiming to be news, claiming their truth is the truth when it's merely yet another method of profiting off stoking poorie fights in the streets so we aren't a threat to them.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 days ago

it's a perfect summary

and it's so obvious once you've seen it.

[–] LovableSidekick 4 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Fighting a culture war because of collective OCD or whatever keeps us from fighting a class war, but nobody's doing it on purpose. That's the weird thing - there's no agenda, just people behaving similarly because of similar fears, motivations and delusions.

I think somebody could probably figure out how to make Asimov's psychohistory a real science.

You've never seen Fox News?

[–] LovableSidekick 1 points 5 days ago

Of course. My dad was pretty much addicted to it. I think it's a pile of crap.
