Bet if it was a drone following a billionaire around they would have someone in custody

[–] FiremanEdsRevenge 36 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I highly doubt that, and it's insane to me how these haven't been shot down yet. If it's posing such a threat, especially since it's near a military installation shoot it down and see who bitches about it when you do.

[–] [email protected] 29 points 6 days ago

Exactly. The military has probably told them to plead ignorance. If this isn't a military test then the military is not protecting the US airspace.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, let's just fire weapons indiscriminately in densely populated areas for some UAVs that don't seem to pose an obvious threat. Good thinking.

They're by the ocean genius.

Things are going to get crazy with drone tech. The stuff that's been cooked up in the conflict in Ukraine will inevitably find its way into civilian hands. After all, a lot of it was designed specifically to be built off of easily available parts and built off of commonly available tools like 3D printers. Imagine a situation like Luigi's except using drones. Maybe a whole swarm of them unleashed on a corporate gathering, each with facial recognition tech. Drones in Ukraine are already built with small explosives, designed to target single individuals; they just fly right up to their targets and explode.

And it goes beyond that. I'm particularly worried about incendiary drones. Assassination drones require good facial recognition tech, and they usually rely on having access to the target in an outdoor area. But destruction of property via incendiary drones? All such a drone has to do is to be able to fly to a fixed GPS position, land, and activate a thermite or other charge to start a huge fire.

My inner anti-corporatist smiles at the idea of such things being wielded against evil CEOs, but the knife cuts both ways. This tech can be use by a Luigi, but it can also be used by a McVeigh or Bin Ladin. Imagine someone or a group releasing thousands of cheap 3D printed incendiary drones on a city. Imagine a small fire starting on the roof of every building in a city simultaneously - and the fire stations are hit with dozens. A city could be burned to ashes for maybe a few hundred thousand dollars, or the cost of a single home in that city.

Technology is reaching the point where a single depraved individual may be able to recreate the firebombing of Dresden. While I smile at the idea of some evil corporate killer getting their just desserts, I'm a lot more worried about the negative potential of this technology. We are literally reaching a point where a single individual can cause an amount of destruction equivalent to a modest nuclear explosion, using tools they build in their basement.

As a huge cyberpunk fan, the prospect of having such tech to disrupt the ruling classes lives is amazing. Dreams of fighting back against "The Man" with guerilla drone warfare is exciting. As a normal person living in reality (and one of the biggest cities in America) it's nerve wracking. Really feels like tensions are rising and I'm anticipating that the status quo is gonna get shaken up, for better or worse.

On the cusp of something. That's for sure. Great writeup

Why do we spend so much money on defense and intelligence if they can't perform when it comes to shit like this?

[–] [email protected] 15 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Redistribution of tax dollars to billionaires. It's not about results.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 days ago

It looks like it finally landed how corrupt the health sector is... Defense is even more corrupt expect they kill people outside of this here US.

[–] ZetaLightning94 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Because most of the intelligence we spend on is foreign. Most domestic intelligence is blocked by section 702

[–] obre 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)
[–] ZetaLightning94 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, still not sharing domestic intelligence under the guise of FVEY. Its still illegal for CIA and NSA to handle or hold domestic intelligence

It's a me, a Waluigi.

Also I'm just gonna start flying my drone in the middle of the night for funsies. I mean, not over a military base, but just mess around the neighborhood.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Getting your rig shot at by a paranoid redneck is a rite of passage.

What do you fly? You do freestyle, or photography/videography?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I have an Autel Evo Nano+

I previously had a Potensic Atom

Before that, its a bunch of Toy-Grade HolyStone drones.

(I intentionally avoid DJI because of geofencing, and Autel is the only real competitor, but I don't know if they are still making consumer drones anymore.

So if Autel is gone, its just Potensic and Fimi drones with no geofencing, and these are kinda shitty brands, not as good as DJI, but its the only ones left without geo-restrictions. But at least its not HolyStone level of shitty.)

I kinda just explore the skies and looks around the neighborhood. I mean I sometimes record videos just to keep them in an SSD, but like I don't really wanna make youtube videos. Cuz um... I don't follow line of sight rules (fuck FAA).

I just want enjoy the view from above. Cuz I'm not gonna be piloting manned aircraft, so videofeed from drones is the closest thing there is. The world looks amazing from above.

Theres a park nearby where theres a clear view where thers zero obstuctions, and I fly can fly like 4000 meters away and its like a road trip, in the sky, and I barely have enough battery to return.

I actually lost drones when took it too far and then it went against the wind during return. Rookie mistakes lol.

[–] TwoBeeSan 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Made me interested in getting a drone. Thanks bb

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago

Yea just dont get a DJI, they have some geolocking on their drones. I personally don't like when companies control stuff you buy, but if you don't mind the restrictions, then sure, get DJI.

So basically, the best brands there is are:

  • ~~DJI~~ (geofencing, I don't recommend)
  • Autel
  • Potensic
  • Fimi
  • Everything else seems like toy-grade stuff

reddit.com/r/drones have great info, niche subreddits are still very useful despite reddit's enshittification

Rule of Thumb: Don't fly into airports, Don't fly into military bases, Don't fly when high-level politicians are near your area (unless you wanna get a visit from the government).

[–] Thrillhouse 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Interestingly civilian drones get disabled around these NJ ones. Apparently they can’t fly and have issues.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Not all.

Non-DJI drones do not have geofencing

But then they do have radio jammming...

Unless its a self-contained AI piloted drone, which Ukraine still haven't figured out, so I don't think so.

Which lead to one conclusion:

This seems like US Military testing new killing drones, but they don't want to admit testing new autonomous killing machines.

[–] Thrillhouse 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It’s been a long time for testing and no one seems in the loop. Why lie about it.

Also the military has testing sites - why over populated civilian areas? Why not say they’re running a military exercise and loop in law enforcement at the very least?

Why also the sightings of similar “drones” in the UK?

Why do they “go dark” when chased?

If it was US military why did they prevent a medical helicopter from taking off? That seems highly unnecessary and cruel.

It’s super interesting that there are reports that a bunch of drones were following a coast guard ship.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

why over populated civilian areas? Why not say they’re running a military exercise and loop in law enforcement at the very least?

Because it's probably near where they're developing them and they need a real-world test case. They don't tell anyone because generally it doesn't cause harm and it's classified.

Why also the sightings of similar “drones” in the UK?

Because they have similar projects.

Why do they “go dark” when chased?

Because they don't want to be chased.

If it was US military why did they prevent a medical helicopter from taking off? That seems highly unnecessary and cruel.

I'm guessing they weren't aware (I haven't read the article yet). Edit: this article does not mention this happening.

It’s super interesting that there are reports that a bunch of drones were following a coast guard ship.

Also a useful test case.

[–] Thrillhouse 1 points 6 days ago

It’s certainly one perspective but I don’t think it’s the only possibility.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 days ago

Either this is some sort of hush hush shit or the United States just doesn't care about policing it's own air space anymore. Which seems more likely?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 days ago

Is the owner class ready to tell US that aliens are real and they are in fact the lizid people?!

Time to call Epirus and get a couple of their LEONIDAS systems in there.
