  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). 3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. 4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

Ego death might benefit a few of these people

[–] JamesTBagg 17 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I know one guy who went through this. He was one of the most insufferable, alpha-male, Tate/Rogan macho men, he-man woman hater... I knew of not one person that liked him, only a few could even tolerate him.
He suffered... suffered might be the wrong word, experienced an ego death on shrooms. I won't say I liked him but he became calmer, he became someone you could talk to. He became someone others CHOSE to socialize with, they invited him out.
The transformation in this guy's personality was amazing. I don't know that his social or political views changed, but he absolutely did.

It kinda lets you know your place in the universe, but not in a debasing sort of way, it also helps you appreciate that place, as it is your place and belongs to you.

Psychedelics are fun, and introspective... if the person is.

[–] Bacano 8 points 3 days ago

Fr lol. Everyone should safely try a heavy psilocybin dose at least once. (Unless you have a genetic history of schizophrenia)

I think that if you get a position in Congress / the White House / the Supreme Court you should be required to pick from a menu of ego-shattering experiences before you take office. Psychedelics are on the list, but there can be other options in case drugs are no good for you. Things like extended fasting, a round in a sensory deprivation tank, a trip to orbit, being present for an organ donor having their organs removed... I'm sure we could come up with a list of drug-free experiences that would be transformative and drive home that you aren't the center of the universe.

a trip to orbit

"You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch.'"

I think people might overstate how much the Overview Effect would help.

John Glenn's time in congress had him oppose nuclear proliferation, fix safety and environmental problems at nuclear weapon storage facilities, and to clean up nuclear waste. He also supported the B-1 bomber program, was wrapped up in the Keating Five corruption scandal, voted against gun locks for transferring pistols, and voted against a underage tobacco usage amendment. He generally supported every defense department budget bill.

Bill Nelson voted for the Patriot Act--just like everyone else in the Senate except Feingold--and also voted against a mandate for a 2007 complete withdrawal from Iraq.

It's all a mixed bag, at best. It's not going to magically transform our political system.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod 3 points 2 days ago

I just like the idea of dragging politicians a quarter million miles into the vacuum of space

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I've known raving fascist assholes who also took psychedelics. They're not a panacea, however much you might like to imagine they are.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Thats what throwing them in the woods alone for a month is for, fucken rends you down. Im not even talking a survival situation just no internet, radio, or tv, books are allowed but cant be anything that is explicitly propaganda Heinlein is allowed though just not Starship Troopers.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Not everyone comes out of that shifting to a less authoritarian position. For most people, it does seem to do that, but not all. Psychedelics are common among white supremacists, and it tends to make them even more authoritarian.

Maybe they will be so gorked out of their minds that they'll fail to implement anything in Project2025

[–] [email protected] 15 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I suspect they're not trying to do a good thing--what they're doing is likely making psychedelics as easy to access as possible, get everyone doing them, have that (obviously) go poorly, and then say "See? Nixon was right, minorities bad.”

RFK spoke positively of psychedelics in the same sentence as raw milk, so I think we're about to see decades of progress reversed.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 3 days ago (2 children)

The raw milk thing is so dumb. I somehow stumbled upon it on Tiktok and most of them heat the milk up before consuming it lol... do they not know what pasteurization is?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 days ago

They're probably doing it wrong: not long enough, not high enough temperature, lack of other basic sanitary protections.

Also, TikTok is cancer.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago

TikTok content creator and "knowing" are like oil and water. Mixing requires soap. I don't know what soap is.

[–] [email protected] -3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Is there any evidence of this? Not saying I disagree (and honestly wouldn’t be too surprised if this were the case), but just because it’s the “other team” that’s making the claim doesn’t necessarily equate to automatically being “bad”.

We gotta take statements, evidence, and arguments at face value. I have no idea what their intentions are or what the actual plan is (since it’s almost impossible to find any consistency within the GOP), but opening up psychedelics, in a controlled manner, could do wonders for society.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 days ago

but just because it’s the “other team” that’s making the claim doesn’t necessarily equate to automatically being “bad”.

They're fascists, it absolutely means that, we cannot give them a micro inch of trust or benefit of the doubt

Who's ready for MKUltra part 2?? :DDDDD

[–] Death_Equity 21 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I volunteer.

Best case, I get to see the beauty of existence and get a Wikipedia page.

Worst case, I finally snap and die after shooting myself in the back of the head twice.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

That's the beauty of MkUltra. You don't get to volunteer. You'll find out decades later why you had an incredibly weird day of freaking out.

[–] baldingpudenda 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I thought it was: snap, live off the land in seclusion and build drone bombs from scratch

I think all you really need is a cabin, some ANFO, and determination.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 days ago

A broken clock is right once a day. I use 24H time.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's how you get a Manson family with 70 million members.

MK-ultra 2.0 : boogaloo boys

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

well that's good as I'd like to spend the next four years as far from reality as possible.

[–] bitchkat 1 points 3 days ago

I'm thinking of getting a camper van to do just that.
