I've actually heard a fairly common motivation tip is to not tell people when you've started a new project or healthy habit.

Some people believe that sharing the news with people is what ultimately gives you the feelgood chemicals, and then suddenly you have less desire to do the thing.

I don't think this is to say that you shouldn't share your accomplishments. In fact, if you struggle with perfectionism, you might never think that you're totally finished a project. But if you're in the tenuous first stages of a new activity, it might benefit you to wait until things are a little more concrete before sharing the fun stuff.

I heard and kinda do this exact thing based off a TED Talk from years ago.

It kinda works, until you need to start telling your manager wtf you're working on and how much progress you've made 🀦

How did you just describe the downfall of every hobby I've ever tried.

  • I try a hobby
  • I get excited
  • I tell someone about what I'm learning
  • Hobby dies

I am trying really hard to get back into my practicing hobbies after a hiatus, because I want to get good, but I'm also struggling with the fact that, by the time I'm good, I won't be able to appreciate it because I'm aware of all the practice I put into it, and it becomes my normal.

I also struggle with committing years to something.

The trick is to tell no one and still do nothing! You get to keep the friends and the anxiety!

That's exactly what I did the day I realized people didn't react anymore whenever I told them the new thing I wanted to do, they just knew I wouldn't do shit in the end.

Still try and do the thing. Just don't tell anyone until it's done!

I believe in your book idea/code project/game concept/movie script!

No, I really don't need another bunch of money spent for a half finished project that I'm never going to finish or hobby that I'll never return to. It sounds bad but it truly is better for me to give up and not try, at least it doesn't continue piling failures on top of me.

[–] NegativeInf 5 points 1 month ago

Notice how all of mine were things for which little money is spent in the process. Lol.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

what kinds of half finished projects do you have laying around, and what kind of hobbies are you never returning to?

[–] themeatbridge 9 points 1 month ago

Except then I don't share anything with my friends and slowly lose them anyway because I'm boring.

You can also just shoot down your ideas as you speak them "but I would first need to clean that workspace, and that's impossible"

[–] PugJesus 16 points 1 month ago

Oh, fuck, is that an ADHD symptom?

Every day I find out more and more of me is just mental illness

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago

And yet you've created this very Lemmy instance we're posting on. Curious.

Just a tinge of RSD

On the good side your family and friends start just not believing you when you say you're going to do this thing

On the bad side sometimes (so far exactly once for me) a friend will implement the idea you sketched that time and haven't done yourself, and they do it wrong

[–] Noobnarski 2 points 1 month ago

Best thing is, when you finally do do the thing, everyone is going to be surprised. And you can say that you did tell them that you would do it.

Ask me how I know.

so so SO many plans on the "back burner" its ludicrous

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Everything on the back burner, nothing on the front burner

[–] T156 2 points 1 month ago

Front burner's all burned out, and the replacement hasn't arrived yet. πŸ˜”

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Back of the oven is gettin pretty crowded, I could use some more back burners

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Count yourself lucky. My front burner has become a secondary backburner and I've moved on to using a portable cooktop.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago
