Hexbear family outing c. 1937

I wonder how this worked out for them, specifically, in the end. The wife/mother has a very longsuffering look on her face.

Probably fine. I think a lot about how Bayer, which literally made the gas for the chambers, is still around and apparently doing well. And while Germany was war ravaged, it wasn't to a much greater extent than the rest of Europe.

Yes but I also imagine many of the males in that picture died or were injured

Germany lost an entire generation of males during WWII. They didn't run out of war machines, they ran out of soldiers.

The book Die Deutsche Mutter und ihr erstes Kind (The German Mother and her first child) by Johanna Haarer was very popular during that time and even basic book for education in the Reichsmütterschule (Reichs mother's school) and even after the war. The fortunately last reprint is from 1987.

It's a very sad reality, not only in Germany.

I bet the oldest son got drafted towards the end.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago

I'd bet both elder sons got drafted, as the one on the right looks like 9-10.

Well ~~the Weimar Republic~~ Germany before the Nazis was also a regressive shithole run by an absolutely terrible monarch. I'm sure the wife had been suffering in Germany for a while

E: I made a silly mistake

[–] PugJesus 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's the German Empire. The Weimar Republic was an unstable shithole run by a revolving series of coalitions that ended with ze Nazis.

[–] rockSlayer 10 points 3 days ago (2 children)

That's right lol I forget how short lived the Republic was

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago

It survived longer than the Nazi reign did though

14.5 years compared to ~12

She's mad that Papa is violating the social rules about giving his children any hint of physical affection.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 3 days ago (3 children)

The kids seem just the right age for being in Hitler Jugend towards the end of the war. Is there any more info about this family? I'm curious about their individual fates, and whether they survived.

As both boys on the left and right are wearing an HJ-belt, I assume both are already in HJ.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yes, and I think that if they stayed the course, they would be thrown into the defense of Berlin in 1945

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This happened not only in Berlin, e.g. my grandpa was ordered as FlAK aid with the age of 16 (or even 15, I cannot ask him anymore).

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

FIAK? Is that the same as Volksturm?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No, FlAK means anti aircraft gun. He probably had to move the big spot lights or carry ammunition.

Yes, Flug-Abwehr-Kannone.
I hate fonts where I and l can almost not be distinguished.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's been imported into English as just a standard word, no capitalization necessary anymore. Most English speakers probably aren't even aware it's originally a German acronym. We just say "flak" like we say "scuba" and "laser."

I just finished reading a book about German refugees and how they were treated in Denmark.

Its a very interesting book. A lot of boys in their mid teens (16) were in the refugee camps, even though they secretly wanted to be in the Wehrmacht. They were not old enough.

It seems like a lot of effort was put into convincing the German refugees that Nazis were the baddies and revealing what really had happened. Some where executed though, for still believing in Nazism

[–] saltesc 14 points 3 days ago

lol he copied the mo.

That's like a MAGA that starts using orange tanner. No wonder the wife looks totally unfulfilled.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

This is why I don't take family photos with a hat or flag that announces my political affiliation.

proto-Republicans emerging from the primordial ooze

[–] _number8_ 11 points 3 days ago

lol the wife's annoyed smile

[–] DarkCloud 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That younger boy has the right idea, giving a bit of a wave.

[–] Anticorp 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I was thinking that he's giving the same salute Hitler himself would give in response to salutes. He had the same haircut too. That boy was officer material.
