My favorite detail is that one of the vertical solutions is a Star Wars quote only if you choose “Star Trek” as the horizontal solution!

[–] someguy3 28 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

The Star wars fans will recognize the quote and have to solve for Star Trek. Aka they were trapped.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 8 months ago

Caught my eye on that too, brilliant

[–] [email protected] 112 points 8 months ago (3 children)

But stargate doesn't work so clearly the puzzle is wrong.

Tau'ri kree!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 8 months ago

It would be amazing if they somehow made a solution that worked for that too.

[–] coldengineering1234 4 points 8 months ago

lol. That's the only series I enjoyed out of the three.

One newspaper once did this with the two presidential candidates on election day and everyone was like "how did they know"

Wonderful. I love clever people doing clever things.

[–] [email protected] 45 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Funny... I don't see BATTLESTAR GALACTICA

[–] [email protected] 24 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Best of these that fit the space, obviously.

Which is why I'm confused what's going on after putting in STARGATE.

[–] HonoraryMancunian 30 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

"It's a grap!" (Graded response action plan. Sure why not)

Waist (still works)

Payets (the family of footballer Dmitri Payet, who I'm sure have been involved in transactions at one point or another)

Leaeed (ah yeah STARGATE is wrong, never mind)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

I'm pretty sure getting leaeed involves becoming "let out, in a way" so maybe you were onto something after all

That's weird, Dark Matter doesn't look like that when I type it.

Clever but makes me feel bad for Star Wars fans who continue to be misled.

Yeah, it’s not actually a sci-fi franchise at all, according to George Lucas himself.

I'm pretty sure I've seen something similar with Clinton and Bob Dole. It's actually really creative and made some people believe that the newspaper can predict the future, when in reality, half of those people thought that they predicted incorrectly when it was apparent that Clinton got elected.

Pretty sure that I first found out about this through a Vsauce video.

Crossword makers should be in charge of everything.

[–] xpinchx 18 points 8 months ago (3 children)

I wish I did better with crosswords, sometimes I can fill out 5-10 answers but it's so sparse it's hard to check myself.

[–] nadiaraven 11 points 8 months ago

There are easier puzzles out there. If you didn't know, generally the easiest puzzles are on Monday, and they get harder everyday of the week. I use an app called Forkyz (on F-Droid, not sure if it's on play store, but I know there are similar apps) that downloads several crosswords. Try Monday's Thomas Joseph or Sheffer for some easier puzzles.

This isn't exactly groundbreaking advice, but keep practicing

9 across is one of my favorites.

"Loves speed and energy" = OOMPH (as in "oomph" is a word meaning energy, or 'Oo! Miles-per-hour!" as in "loves speed").

True, Star Twerk is the best 👌

90%? Boy are you an optimist. I don't think any site that has meaningful traffic is as low as 90%

[–] [email protected] 7 points 8 months ago

The exception being Star Trek memes, oddly enough.

[–] agent_flounder 4 points 8 months ago

It wasn't any time recently; I have been playing nyt crossword every day for several months now.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 8 months ago (2 children)

I’m definitely not thinking of “leased” with that clue, so I probably would’ve ended up with Trek.

[–] HonoraryMancunian 9 points 8 months ago

You don't have to make excuses for being a Trekkie

[–] [email protected] 6 points 8 months ago

To “let” or “let out” something means it’s available for rent or lease. If you ever happen to see a sign in a window that says “Apartment to Let”, that’s what it means. In my experience, it’s more of a British English term than an American English term. Still not wrong, though.

I'm so glad this post made it to my front page. I was not aware of this community and I'm a huge puzzle nerd. Subbed!

[–] HonoraryMancunian 5 points 8 months ago

Welcome! This sub is usually sparse save for LCP's daily addition, so feel free to contribute

Too bad the most recent Sunday puzzle was just a Business pun theme. Although, the Two-Possible-Answers puzzles tend to glitch up on the app, had to get tech support to fix my streak.

Also, people new to crosswords- they do this shit all the time. Look up Rebus squares, they're pretty insane. A little while ago I had to place three squares each with the word "bus" in each square for an Evel Knievel themed puzzle not too long ago. Think it was a Thursday, which is common for rebuses.

My official answer is quick readability reasons for Lemmy scrollers

My real answer is this is how I found it

[–] TheBat 19 points 8 months ago

This does not need an article.
