While it is well known that cannabis can cause the munchies, researchers have now revealed a mechanism in the brain that promotes appetite in a set of animal studies at Washington State University.

The discovery, detailed in the journal Scientific Reports, could pave the way for refined therapeutics to treat appetite disorders faced by cancer patients as well as anorexia and potentially obesity.

After exposing mice to vaporized cannabis sativa, researchers used calcium imaging technology, which is similar to a brain MRI, to determine how their brain cells responded. They observed that cannabis activated a set of cells in the hypothalamus when the rodents anticipated and consumed palatable food that were not activated in unexposed mice.

A childhood friend of mine suffers from severe anorexia and was prescribed medical Marijuana for it. It did miracles for her. These types of medical discoveries can and will help many people. Let's keep studying it, and ideally fully legalize weed in the meantime.

How’s this work with those of us who eat less when stoned?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Did you consider emotional issues that are less present when high and otherwise drive you to eat when sober?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's possible, but I feel like I eat smaller than average amounts when sober anyway.

You are demon spawn and will be cleansed by the holy light of eternal munchies

I thought I was the only one! People always look at me weird because when I'm hungry I smoke a bit and the hunger is gone for a while!

Fuck you dude, I keep getting fat and there's you.....

Sorry mate, have you tried smoking meth?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I used to fall asleep when I did meth a few times, never got the revved up manic shit everyone else did.

I just stayed up all night and connected with/made the best friend in the world as we talked all night. No fucking idea who he was and never saw him again, 10/10.

Ah, you misunderstand, I eat nearly constantly when I'm sober/not high. When I'm high I'm finally ok without eating constantly. I'm already fat.

Been using cannabis daily for several years now and I've always disagreed with the claim that weed causes the munchies. Rather, I would argue that weed blocks communication between the stomach and the brain. Essentially, if you start eating, it is easier to keep eating because the message that your stomach is getting full gets lost ("the munchies"). However, if you are hungry right before you smoke, the urge to eat goes away after smoking (or at least becomes a lot easier to ignore). I lost a lot of weight thanks to weed simply by never eating when I was high.

This is all anecdotal of course, but every daily smoker I've talked to agrees with me.

Same for me. I also smoke daily when I water fast and have no issues not eating for extended durations. If anything, I find it helps avoid eating.

Did you not even read past the headline?

[–] JeffreyOrange 5 points 1 year ago

And in other news you can't read.

You don't say.

Wooooooow such a… discovery…

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Had studies like this already found the same mechanisms?

[–] [email protected] -3 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes. That's what science is about...lol

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Wow I’m not a scientist, and I know this 30 years ago … and I’m not the only one…

Some people also "know" that going outside with cold hair causes people to catch a cold, but that's not true.

In addition, studies help determine to what extent and effect happens. Studies also help determine what and where any edge cases might be, which can be important for treating illnesses, for example.
