Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, and toxicity are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either [email protected] or [email protected].
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email [email protected]. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try [email protected] or [email protected]
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

If theyre banned, how are they participating?
It might be a temporary ban - those do not retroactively remove comments of the person in question IIRC.
Who? They haven’t even gave us a user@instance.
Banned from the server where their comment with that icon appears?
I'm still trying to grasp federation; sorry if it's a stupid question.
Banned from your instance. What user are you looking at? If they’re banned on their home instance it federates everywhere as far as I know.
One of the icons may be the bot account indicator.
That's a robot head icon, right? It would be nice to see a list of all the icons and their meaning.
If you hover the mouse pointer above such an icon (don't click it), it usually displays what it stands for. For example, when you hover aove the [OP] next to your username here, a little indicator saying "creator" will pop up.
You can add emojis and special characters to your regular username, like the wolf icon in my displayed name. If that's what you meant, then those don't need to have a meaning.
If you still mean something else, a screenshot would be nice. You can blur the username of the screenshotted person if you're feeling more comfortable that way. ;)
I believe you, but I don’t see any emojis in your name or others. Sometimes I see a little baby emoji, but that’s it.
But then I’m using the Voyager client so it might just be me.
That's what it looks like in the Firefox browser on desktop. If it's different for you, then it is very likely the app, yes.
lol. Your name in Voyager as I see it is “justlookingfordragon”.
I’m sure that won’t be a cause of confusion at all.
There is a difference between the display name (Wolf Link) and the handle (@[email protected] ) the display name is initially, by default, the first part of the handle, as it is with your account. But you can change it. If you are linking the user, you have to use the handle, which is unique.
Voyager seems to ignore the display name and just displays the first part of the handle on its own. Which is indeed kind of confusing.
Oh, that's the account name, not the display name ^^° but interesting to see how extremely different it all looks between apps.
I'm in the Firefox browser on desktop and it looks like this:
Thanks Wolf Link. The icon I was referring to is attached to my post (a red person with a red slash across it) and it is located between the user's avatar and the user name. Your wolf is located to the right of your username, so the icon I'm referring to is on the left of the username.

You can add emojis anywhere, so it doesn't really matter where exactly it is. Just to demonstrate it; I temporarily added a checkmark and an exclamation mark to my username ;)
The symbol you posted however... i've not seen that on the site so far. Does Jerboa have custom icons maybe?
Took a couple of days to get familiar, but you should switch to Voyager if you want to search the content of posts across lemmy. I used Jerboa for 6 months and finally decided to check out Voyager after a few bugs in Jerboa and comment sorting default not being a thing.
It's been much better since switching for me. Text formatting needs work but that's pretty minor in the grand scheme of things to me.
Thanks, I'll check it out.
Like stinkyhat said, I'm seeing user avatars to the left of usernames, and community icons to the right of usernames. Those are all going to have individual meanings, if they aren't set to the default.
As for search, I'm in a web browser, and I don't find the UI to be very user friendly, either.
Do you mean the user's avatar?
This isn't the right community for tech support questions, you should try your app's community or [email protected] instead.
No, not the avatar. I added an example of the icon to my post.
Thanks for the suggestion! Is it possible to cross-post? I don't see the option here.
B - Bot
A - Administrator
M - Moderator
OP - Original Poster
Where do you see those?
Nice! Is that a web browser or an app that you're using? It doesn't look like that for me on Jerboa.
Standard browser view. Apps change the appearance quite a bit.
