We learn something new every day. This is a community dedicated to informing each other and helping to spread knowledge.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must begin with TIL. Linking to a source of info is optional, but highly recommended as it helps to spark discussion.

** Posts must be about an actual fact that you have learned, but it doesn't matter if you learned it today. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.**

Rule 2- Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding non-TIL posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-TIL posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

For further explanation, clarification and feedback about this rule, you may follow this link.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

Unless included in our Whitelist for Bots, your bot will not be allowed to participate in this community. To have your bot whitelisted, please contact the moderators for a short review.

It's right there under New. I'm not sure how long it has been there!

Unfortunately it doesn't appear to let you change any parameters, so you're "stuck" with ed25519.

You also can't paste in an existing key, which is what I was expecting to be able to do.

So til that if you use DuckDuckGo search engine, and you're not happy with the result and want to run the previous search through Google, instead of copying your search, then heading to Google, then pasting your previous search, you can just add !g to front of your search in DuckDuckGo and that will auto direct you to Google and run that search for you!

For example: !g search term for Google

A Dyson sphere is a hypothetical megastructure that encompasses a star and captures a large percentage of its power output. The concept is a thought experiment that attempts to imagine how a spacefaring civilization would meet its energy requirements once those requirements exceed what can be generated from the home planet's resources alone. Because only a tiny fraction of a star's energy emissions reaches the surface of any orbiting planet, building structures encircling a star would enable a civilization to harvest far more energy.

Almost certainly not news to any British people, but it was news to me and I think that's really cool.

I couldn't even imagine something like that in the U.S.

Today I discovered the FediHost Podcast on PeerTube and thought maybe I could find an audio version by searching for it in AntennaPod.

I didn't find an audio version, but found out that the podcast is available in video format and that I can watch / listen to it in AntennaPod. I searched for a couple other PeerTube channels and they too are available through AntennaPod.

Pretty amazing stuff.

PMI stands for Private Mortgage Insurance, and it is required on mortgages with a loan-to-value ratio greater than 80%. For example, if your home was worth $100k at the time of closing, and you owe more than $80k on the loan, you are required to have PMI.

I got my annual PMI disclosure tonight, and it says that if I’ve had my loan for at least two years, and have a good payment history for at least two years, I am eligible to cancel my PMI.

It’s not a lot, mind you. But I’d love to save the ~$70/mo it costs. That’s a fifth of vodka and a bag of CBD gummies, every month.

I guess there was a huge legal fight that he eventually won through argument and opponent apathy, so as long as he doesn't let the character sit completely idle, he keeps the rights despite no longer giving a fuck either. It's utterly petty, and if I cared more about Dick Tracy I'd probably find it infuriating rather than hilarious.

It seems like it is based on a combination of an earlier draft of the novel and the translator's own ideas, because it contains things that were in Stoker's notes but not in the final manuscript, and a lot of Scandinavian mythology is added. It is more overtly erotic and political as well.

"After a silence of 3000 years..."

Among the remarkable treasures found in Tutankhamun's tomb were two ornate trumpets, one made of silver and the other of bronze. In 1939, BBC radio broadcast the trumpets' music to 150 million people listening in world wide, broadcast to "The Four Corners Of The World". During the looting of the Cairo Museum in 2011, one of the trumpets had been stolen and has since been recovered.

Ray Anthony was the trumpet player for the famous Glenn Miller swing orchestra. The group formed around 1938 and performed many jazz classics.

Nearly 30 years ago, Lewis completely lost his hearing in his right ear. It “freaked” him out, but he eventually came to terms with it and adapted to relying solely on his right ear.

“And then seven years ago, my left ear failed right before a gig in New Orleans, and it was a horrible thing. I just went on a stage and I couldn’t hear anything,” Lewis recalled. “It was devastating.”

He was diagnosed with Meniere’s disease, a condition of the inner ear that causes severe vertigo and hearing loss.

For six months, Lewis tried anything he was told could improve his hearing. Renowned ENTs. Acupuncture. Chiropractic treatments. Low salt and organic diets. He exhausted all his options, and nothing cured his condition.

“I can’t identify pitch anymore. It’s very frustrating. Tonight, I’ll have a hard time recognizing the songs that are played. I will be able to, because I know the tempos, I know the beat, you know, but it’s (been) a tough pill to swallow.”

Now, when music is playing, Lewis only hears “noise distortion.”

Make all the American Psycho jokes you want, but the man was an amazing performer with a terrific voice, so this makes me really sad.

The Verve developed "Bitter Sweet Symphony" from a sample from a 1965 version of the Rolling Stones song "The Last Time" by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra, adding vocals, strings, guitar and percussion. After a lawsuit by the Rolling Stones' former manager, Allen Klein, the Verve relinquished all royalties and the Rolling Stones members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were added to the songwriting credits. In 2019, ten years after Klein's death, Jagger, Richards, and Klein's son ceded the rights to the Verve songwriter, Richard Ashcroft.

Pretty much the only thing they're remembered for and they make no money from it. Supreme FAFO moment.

So, even if you had been immune, through previous illness, vaccination or via maternal milk, you may not be anymore after having measles.

I had never heard this until today, and it's an absolutely horrifying thought.

You're welcome.

The US potato industry brings in US$240 million annually, and demand for taters in all their wonderful processed shapes and sizes is year-round. As such, a certain amount of stock in season is sent to cold storage to supply the demand. However, thanks to a normal biological function in the root vegetable, low temperatures trigger a mechanism that converts starches to sugars. When processed, these tubers that have experienced cold-induced sweetening (CIS) appear darker when cooked.

Unfortunately, it's more than potato-skin deep, as this darkened chip is a crispy red flag – it indicates elevated levels of acrylamide, a chemical that has been associated with increased cancer risk due to its carcinogenic properties.
