I'm actually seeing more and more .world users getting pissed as the downtimes become more frequent now.
I mean that is the problem of too many people being on that one instance.
I mean that is the problem of too many people being on that one instance.
From what I understand, capacity isn't the issue, it's that they're being repeatedly DDoS'ed
It's a chicken and egg problem, their high popularity makes them a ddos target
I moved instances after the downtime when Sync came out, it's been smooth sailing since
IF you want to switch to an alternative instance use the tool Lasim to synchronize your accounts: synchronize subscriptions, settings and/or blocks. Tool is available for Windows, Linux and MacOs.
Do you know of a way for those of us only on mobile to move subs over?
just pick another instance and create another account. same email. not complicated. can't migrate stuff you can't get to, meh lemmy instances fediverse.observer
Cuz you can just use another smaller instance, as you should.
Lemmy.zip and lemm.ee are cool
Everyone talking about how small and better lemm.ee is really starting to give "have you heard about this hidden gem The Witcher 3?" vibes.
lemm.ee isn't even that small. It's the 6th largest active lemmy instance iirc
Hidden. Gem.
That's the point of the joke, the witcher 3 is a huge game but people always act like they're in on some secret for knowing that it's good.
For all the people that like to talk about having access to the whole fediverse and decide for themselves who to block...
mander.xyz and ttrpg.network are both rather niche instances in their own right, but don't defederate, and I don't believe are defederated by, anyone.
No one join them and say/do anything toxic though, don't ruin a good thing for me lol
If only federation existed... and other instances existed....
Ah yes, let's forever create new accounts on new instances as they all get bogged down. Solid solution.
Tbh I've just stopped using my world account at this point. Lemmy.ca has been much more reliable so far lol.
I started at lemm.ee because I knew that signing up to the biggest instance was a bad idea. We have pretty good uptime and it doesn't seem like lemm.ee has been wrapped up in any of the drama of the bigger instances.
Up time 76% on lemmy.world // last 24h.
No message from any of their admis.
Outside attack : usual shitheads.
And if ~~LM~~ LW fails, they will attack the next big one.
Edit #1 : LM is Lemmy.world
Edit #2 : oups LW ... not LM
Edit #3 : Lemmy.World status
Edit #4 : from 4am utc //24h :
Interesting, thanks for sharing. Is that info publicly available?
LW is currently down (for me, at least) and I'm curious if it tends to happen at the same time every day.
From the sidebar of the main page of lemmy.world, so :
That 76% was 2 hours ago, now at 74%
I never gave reddit 1c and blocked all ads. I donate to lemmy.world.
I have zero anger when lemmy is down, I despised reddit, especially towards the end.
I really wish more people would donate to lemmy I think it's totally fair to pay for someone to manage and help with running the site.
It's hard to just say "volunteer".... Even if people volunteer and we can only afford to send 50% of their fee their way it's still something....
If we want lemmy to thrive without ads we have to all pitch in. Just give 2$/ month... If we all did that we'd be able to hire people full time...
Gotta love decentralised shit
The funny thing is that Reddit with its big teams and infrastructure was also sluggish and going down a lot this week and we keep forgetting that. No excuses for Reddit.
Same reason I am here. I had two small communities for my interests there, but it was down so often that I decided to move here AND move my communities. This place seems a lot more stable. That's really the downside of huge servers on lemmy IMO. If communities centralize on one server, whenever that one server is down, so are the communities for everyone.
I would totally run my own server but I'm not tech enough. I have spare hardware, and I have a 1GB fiber connection, but I am not a network security expert, so I am afraid my home IP address would be targeted and disrupt my house Internet in general. Even if I don't allow others to create account or communities on my server, I still feel like it's a risk for me because I am not skilled enough to deal with threats.
I mean communities being on world is an issue too.
My home instance managed to get blocked by Lemmy World's Cloudflare firewall, probably because my Pleroma/Akkoma account and my Lemmy account are on the exact same IP.
I switched to lemm.ee, it's much more stable since it's not constantly being attacked by script kiddies. I have a theory a user got banned, and is making it their personal mission to ruin .world's performance. Please donate to your home instance owner(s) if they have that set up. Even if it's just a little, it can make everyone's experience better.
wjats so good about lemmy.world compared to lemmy.ml
More letters
Lemmy.world is run by the same people as mastodon.world. I guess a lot of users from mastodon.world went to Lemmy.world and the rest was word of mouth.
I think the name does a lot of heavy lifting in regards to pulling in new users. It sounds more official or general because of the world part.
Yeah, people just want a "generic" place because they generally don't want to be pidgeon holed. I have nice and inoffensive lemmy.world and lemmy.today accounts because of this. I'm basically a vanilla NPC in my life and "sh.itjust.works" is simply too spicy!
lemmy.world isn't run by communists
that sounds like a downside, unless you mean the kinda USSR/Chinese "communists" that are just state capitalists/feudalists
options are optional
this is the opposite on reddit (obvious reasons). ppl go ham when someone mentions lemmy.world is down lol
Which is especially funny since you can just log into a different instance and keep browsing, unlike with Reddit.
Not having just an account on .world is a necessity since it's the favorite target of attacks (at least, I'm assuming that's why it's down so much).
