With less than two weeks to go before a March 14 deadline, Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. Congress appear to be nowhere close to a deal to avert a government shutdown that would throw Washington into deeper turmoil.

The talks have been complicated by President Donald Trump, who has ignored spending laws passed by Congress, suspended foreign aid and fired tens of thousands of federal workers.

Both sides say his actions are the biggest sticking point as they seek to reach a deal that would provide government funding beyond March 14, when it is due to expire.

Democrats say they are trying to secure guarantees that would prevent Trump and his budget-slashing point person, billionaire Elon Musk, from firing more workers or cancelling more government programs.

Just remember... Musk can self-fund the DOGE salaries and they already work weekends to push this stuff through.

Everything else in the government shutting down doesn't necessarily stop their antics. In fact, it may give them more free reign to fuck shit up without anyone to stop them.

He’ll just sleep in his office, like he’s currently doing at every other company of his.

Why? The president sleeps in the White House.

Because the WH is also a residence, not just an office.

It is called The White House

Unless you're alluding to Elon being the president

Time and again.

See! Congress doesn't work. We should just give the president authority to fix these problems.

This is the plan though. This is how you destroy representative governance.

Why do Republicans need Democrats to pass a bill?

Remember, the longest shutdown in US history was in 2019, GOP held the Presidency, Senate, and House (by a much wider margin.

Democrats aren't willing to cause a shutdown, so the only way it happens is if Republicans sabotage themselves.

They might. Their whole governing philosophy is "government doesn't work, elect me so I can prove it" and then stopping the government from working. If this would help the doggy committee slash and burn the administrative state, they might just do it.

I'm essential which means I have to work even if the government shuts down. Last time they pulled this shit I wasn't. But I'm essential til 5/15 so I won't even be able to do side work to get by. These asshats in Congress don't care about the lives they affect.
