In all seriousnessness i have banned almost 5 accounts now that messaged me this exact same post. Is there a way to block this shit?

I got this about 3 or 4 days ago. Blocked it right away. Reminded me of a "Lola Smith" back in the yahoo messenger days who was "stuck in south Africa because someone stole her wallet, and needed money to come home".

Its actually a whole swarm of accounts involved in this. I got the exact same message at least 5 times and each time i blocked it.

It does appear to have stopped now thankfully.

I saw her first, dude

Don't share that picture. It's one of the rare ones, you are devaluating mine.

Is she real? Like is this an actual person spamming the whole fediverse to advertise? Or is this some kind of catfish? Because honestly the latter is less worrisome.

Doubt the victim is doing it.

This looks like a threat actor testing their systems

The picture is stolen by some trash human being who is testing his system to harass the good people of fedi verse.

This is a very stupid bait, so I don't think they intend anything out of it beyond, hey my bot can make accounts, it can posts it can send DMs.

It will get more sophisticated over time to the point like reddit where you cannt tell

You can ask your site admin to add the friendica.world url to the blocked url list in the site settings. I'm like 90% sure it blocks the pms coming through when they inevitably create new accounts

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 days ago (2 children)

If only.

For better or worse, my admins are conservative about site blocks. If I could get 1 siteblock wish, it'd be lemmy.sdf.org - I don't know if the whole instance is rotten, but the fact that they're letting that one person create all those fascist communities and repost unsubstantiated propaganda gives the whole site a black mark.

My second wish would be a block on Hexbear, but by now I've mostly personally blocked nearly all communities and users from there so that wouldn't buy me much.

I have a Friendica account here, somewhere; I should check where I created it. Maybe reporting as a spam would work? This is the first abuse from there I've seen.

SDF is usually pretty cool, and I think they're usually better at moderation than this. Dunno what the deal is with with all the crazy shit going on over there rn.

I've seen reports that were unaddressed for months on end. I've reported some pretty bad shit (and send additional messages) and haven't heard anything despite that being months ago. They've been having issues for a long time afaik.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Ah, that's too bad :/ I hope they start fixing this before other instances run out of patience and begin defederating. If they don't have a problem with the shit people are posting, then, well, that sucks and good riddance.

FYI: You can block entire instances yourself. You don't need to wait for the admins of your instance to block them (unless, of course, your instance is not up to date and doesn't have that feature).

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

That's a per-app feature, and not all apps support it. Instance blocks are not persisted in the server side - if you delete your app, re-install it, and log in again, your instance blocks will be lost.

(I'm not so sure about the server persistence; there may be some that preserve that metadata, but instance blocking - as a feature - is not part of Lemmy. It's done by the apps).

Glad to know that the chat is called "hell"

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 days ago

Same here, I guess not.

I've seen talk of the picture being stolen. I'd edit to hide it and the links

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 days ago

All the messages referred to the same links. If those aren’t the scammers account then I don't know what they are getting out of this.

In any case i think this picture has been shared wide enough that even in the case of a ex lover revenge scenario it might be better to raise awareness not to contact or bother any accounts under this name.

Usually the reason a scam keeps going is because its working, which in this case would be compelling people to contact using those links.

I also do hope that who ever is behind it can be traced and called out.

I am not 100% certain on this however. If there is overwhelming support for taking it offline i will.

this makes lemmy feel like instagram (that's bad)

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It's not looking good for the Poles.

Does Lemmy log IP addresses?
