Summary

Iranian pop star Amir Hossein Maghsoudloo, known as Tataloo, has been sentenced to death for blasphemy after the supreme court overturned a prior five-year prison sentence.

Tataloo, who had been living in Istanbul since 2018, was extradited to Iran in 2023 and has since been detained.

He also faces charges of promoting “prostitution” and spreading “propaganda” against the Islamic Republic.

The verdict is not final and can still be appealed.

Once a figure courted by conservatives, Tataloo gained fame for his controversial music and tattoos.

I misread that as "Italian" and it felt a bit weird.

Thought it was someone who snaps their spaghetti before cooking it.

That only works for beetlejuice....wait a minute, if you rearrange the letters in "beetlejuice" you get "Beltted Jettis!" Which, if you squint real hard is approximately Jehovah... Just swap the B for a J, the L for an h, obviously Tees look like O's. You get the idea.

Conservatives had their feelings hurt, so death is an option.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 13 hours ago

Only a couple of powerful monied people will pretend there is a victim. And then there is, usually the blasphemer.

Like punching someone in the dark

Like punching an imaginary friend in the dark.

If God (or Allah if you prefer that name) is so angry about blasphemy, why does He risk letting fallible humans take care of the problem?

Simply cause the blasphemer to drop dead. Then the faithful can clean up the aftermath if they wish to appear faithful, because it is less important how that is handled.

Is this comment blasphemous? We'll see if I drop dead.

I think so. Maybe I'm now a delusional and surprisingly active corpse.

They can't because it's not believers vs unbelievers, the clergy educated in biblical scholarship know their position is indefensible that's why they enforce blasphemy laws and murder apostates. Because in the light of transparency, historical context, and evidence none of the religions of Abraham are reasonable to believe.

They know it's made up, but they can't stop because they've convinced themselves it's for the greater good to defend the 'noble lie'.

Or they are power hungry aholes, and/or working for power hungry aholes.

[–] helopigs 1 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

that would be awesome, assuming they're all evil, but destroys the principle of faith

I'm pretty sure that the ruse, if there is one, must be impossible to prove

Turkey extradites to Iran? That seems like something that wouldn't help join the EU.

Edit: I should specify that I'm being somewhat sarcastic. My comment is technically true but in fact this extradition policy is largely irrelevant to real-world diplomacy.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 hour ago

Pretty sure Turkey has given up on ever joining the EU years ago.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

Turkey hasn't wanted to join the EU for decades.

[–] MothmanDelorian 1 points 31 minutes ago

After they were refused repeatedly and the last attempt really highlighted how common racism is in the EU I cannot blame them for not wanting to join anymore.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

I'd say that Turkey has stopped seriously trying to join the EU, but that's because I don't know what they want or don't.

My comment was intended to sound cynical, but I totally failed to actually make it sound that way. (I edited it just now in an attempt to fix that.) Europe's relationship with Turkey is dominated by geopolitical and economic concerns, not moral ones.

Iran is such a dogshit country. Russia too.

[–] ours 9 points 4 hours ago

And special mention to Turkey for extraditing the artist to Iran over such bullshit.

[–] markko 1 points 11 hours ago (4 children)

Are you from that country that just voted in a convicted felon as their next president?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 hours ago

If they were, what would it change? They aren't somehow personally resposible for it, and having a shitty government yourself doesn't mean you can't criticise other shitty governments.

[–] Valmond 5 points 5 hours ago

Reverse whataboutism detected!

Citizens of dog shit countries are the most qualified to talk about others being dog shit.

[–] Siegfried 2 points 4 hours ago
