There's gotta be a lot of buyers remorse among the apple faithful here.

Seems like the consensus in this community has generally been “that thing is mildly interesting, but it’s not for me. Especially not at $3.5k”

Apple after making $2billion in revenue by selling a measly half million headsets.

[–] reddig33 20 points 2 days ago

I’m surprised it’s sold that many.

I still don’t understand the point… it doesn’t have games and it came out with an underpowered M2.

I can’t believe it still can’t play games rendered on a more powerful MacBook Pro… it can’t play any VR games? Not even beat saber? Skyrim VR? Like what’s the point lol.

It's supposedly meant for work, not gaming from what I saw of people trying it out.

Still doesn't mean that it's worth to buy it though.

What’s the work related use case though?

It was a while ago since I watched that video, so I can't remember the details. I think it was by that Marques Brownlee guy on Youtube if you want to check it out.

Regardless it's a luxury item that is not very necessary for the vast majority of people.

If it would be available and I had too much money and thus would use macOS, I definitely would buy one as replacement of my monitor and ego-iPad.

A half million in sales and over 1.5b in revenue isn’t too shabby for a device that exists as a fancy dev kit, an opportunity for the company to learn about new interaction models, and an opportunity to learn about will be compelling and differentiating for non “pro” AR / VR products.

so you're saying the marketing strategy for the Vision was... shortsighted?

[–] iconic_admin 34 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Well if they weren’t priced at half a million dollars.

I'm surprised. 500k is not a small number. The world is a big place

If any other company had a $3500 gen 1 product designed to learn about the space and market, and they made close to $2b in revenue, people would be claiming it was a wild success.

I feel like the 2nd part is the key takeaway they were looking for, longevity. I do feel like they could have learned this from all VR headsets, though. I don't know anyone who purchased one and was still using it 6 months later. If they are, the % has got to be pretty small? I have no clue how you make these things last longer, but maybe apple will think of something?

The only reason I'm still using mine is because there is an online community that makes custom songs for beat saber. Otherwise I don't see the point of this thing.

if it were that bad, there would be plenty of used ones for cheap.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Not sure if this was snarky, but you can indeed get used ones at roughly half of retail, not a great sign for apple.

Looking on eBay, it looks like the base models are going for around $2500, so about a $1000 off. But there are some that are priced a little lower if they’re not super pristine and or the owner wants cash now.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

2100 - 2500 seems to be the range, and Swappa looks to be trending cheaper than eBay. For example a “mint” 512 sold on swappa for just over 2150, it’s not quite half off, but it’s not far. And for those braving Facebook marketplace I’ve heard they are selling cheaper still… but I wouldn’t go there.
