It's those pesky communist agitators!

Maybe not in my lifetime but they'll be gone eventually, just needs to get momentum.

Friendly reminder that Eddie Lampert effectively drowned Sears Holdings (Sears & Kmart) in the bath tub. He single-handedly wiped out two major retailers, hundreds of smaller ones, and tens of thousands of jobs in one of the most successful corporate raids ever executed.

What a greedy shit bag.

I'll be honest: I'm no fan of big corps, but I'm kinda sad that I can't still buy a build-it-yourself house kit from Sears.

[–] jordanlund 4 points 6 days ago

You could probably get it all from Home Depot, but you'd have to bundle the kit together yourself.

Not Sears, but I just spent a fun few moments looking up "adu kit" "cabin kit" "house kit" "home kit" and "prefab home kit."

There's not room to build one inside my little condo, but lots of choices if you have a place to put one.

[–] jordanlund 1 points 6 days ago (3 children)

Depending on what kind, I have the room to add as many as 3, but the problem here is city restrictions limit them to BACK yards only, not front yards. :( I have no back yard, it's ALL front yard.

[–] EmpathicVagrant 3 points 6 days ago

So your mailbox and front door just need put on the other side, pave a little path around so it’s accessible by mail carriers and now you have a colossal back yard but no front yard.

Redefine your house as the ADU and the new unit as the house!

spoiler

(It probably won't work because of rules saying that ADUs must have less square footage than the house and that the total must not exceed some floor area ratio for the whole lot, but it's a fun thought.)

[–] jordanlund 0 points 6 days ago

There would probably be some nightmare with changing the address as well because the new unit(s) would be between the existing house and the street where the address is. Apparently your street address is determined by where your front door faces.

One more thing to figure out. LOL.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

What if you build one larger or at least wider than your house so it becomes the main dwelling and your house is the ADU?

[–] jordanlund 2 points 6 days ago

At that point it's just two houses, which is also doable since it's a double lot.

East Indian trading company had a navy

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Interestingly it was nationalised.

More akin to a hooverville.

What if in this zany world there were no billionaires? Would people still be unhappy with their standard of living? My guess is yes but it's also a catch 22 because billionaires use the sliding scale to minimize wealth for the general populous and maximumize wealth for themselves.

"There would be no incentive for job creators to work! Why do you hate freedom? Sob."

[–] ArchAengelus 1 points 6 days ago

As though they “work” now? (I heard the unwritten /s and just wanted to clarify)

There's no way Amazon would be that close to a community, they couldn't make any money off the shade they would accidentally be providing.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 6 days ago

Come to AZ. They are putting those things up right next to neighborhoods

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 days ago

They’re building one literally in my neighborhood. Apparently all of the notices that “went out” during the comment period didn’t get any response…

I haven’t bought from Amazon or a big box store for years now. Fuck ‘em. First choice is second-hand, if not then I buy local.

If I absolutely cannot solve my issue without plastic shit from China, I just buy it directly and wait a month.

Probably Bing Crosby. I'm too lazy to look it up but he's probably known for singing the song Aint we got fun

That was what I thought as well, I wanted clarity to ensure that OP didn't mean Cosby, as that would also make sense.

Since literally all of the economic policies of the last 5,000 - 12,000 years that most people know about were designed to fuck the poor, the fictional middle class, and anyone else that wasn't rich to begin with. It wasn't called "Horse and Sparrow" economics for no reason. They didn't rebrand it to "Trickle down" economics for no reason.

Prior to 12,000 years ago, one can actually find sensible, and sustainable economic policy that lasted from 15,000 to 25,000 years ago, until the late 1700s. In the form of the six nations. Archeology confirms that 25,000 years ago isn't an unreasonable estimate, just possibly unsupported by current data. Their best data says that the 6 nations were there, and doing much the same thing for at least 20,000 years.

I recommend: the series electric dreams, episode "autofac".

Watchable on... Amazon
