I love crows. If I was a less responsible person, I'd make an effort to incentivize a gang of crows to loiter near my apartment.

Unsalted boiled peanuts.

They'll follow you everywhere.

What's your opinions on shinies, and would you put bottle caps in the recycling for a handful of nuts?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Is it irresponsible because you live in an urban environment and also incentivize them to not forage themselves?

Yeah, it would be one thing if I was living in an ultra-rural area and I could justify myself as just another intermittent food source for the resourceful little guys, but I think I would feel a touch awkward and guilty explaining to my neighbors and my landlord why the local Crow Gang(tm) always seemed to hang around my windows and were suspiciously well-fed.

shiny gifts from crows > respect from your community

Reasons I am sad: I am not currently being yelled at by an adorable crow while wearing an elegant suit

Fun fact: that’s a baby crow! [Edit: or more likely, a baby raven.]

Only young crows have pink/red inside their mouths. Adults have black mouths. I learned this after we started feeding crows at our house and in the summer I noticed some had bright mouths. It’s the only distinguishing feature because by the time the babies are out of the nest, they’re as big as the adults!

Though the way they followed the adults around and begged to be fed also distinguished them a bit!

That is adorable.

Fun fact: that might be a raven considering the man on the chair is a famous german singer called Max Raabe (Raabe is raven in german).

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

Ah, actually that seems likely! I’ve only ever seen bright red mouths on baby crows, so this being pink was a bit of a surprise, but it seems pink is normal for fledgling ravens. The feathers extending onto the beak also do indicate it’s more likely a raven.

Thanks for the call out!

OP starts crow appreciation thread by posting ravens.

I love all crows, especially jackdaws!

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 days ago

I'm pretty sure there's a maximum of 2 crows on that image. Maybe less.
