A few months ago, Scott Yu showcased a phone dock inspired by Dieter Rams' iconic DN40 digital clock.

That got me inspired to create my own version, featuring a wireless charger from IKEA. The charger is integrated into a panel that slides into a slot within the dock's body. Before assembling, the cable is routed through a hole in the back for a clean and functional setup.

Printed with Prusament PLA Galaxy Black & Prusament PETG Orange.

To top it off, I even developed my own Android docking app — because, why not? :D

Very cool! Do you have the screen on for the entire night? Do you worry about burn in?

[–] seasick 2 points 2 days ago

Yes, the screen is on until fully loaded. I've added a burn in prevention to my docking app, which just moves the clock from left to right and back over time.

That's neat! How do you get it out? Is there a secret button?

[–] whostosay 12 points 3 days ago

It's that orange/yellow bar at the top I believe, it recesses and pushes it out. If it's not that, there's a button on top somewhere that does. That is if it's modeled closely to the inspiration he was talking about.

What @chingadera said :)

It looks like the orange thing on the top pushes the phone forwards when pressed.

Thank you. It is greatly appreciated.

that's awesome! I really like the little orange stripy thingy along the top, does that light up? How's heat management with the wireless charging?

[–] seasick 4 points 3 days ago

Thanks - The orange thing on top is for pushing the phone out of the dock and it doesn't light up. Would be cool though. This is my second print of this model (for my desk) - using my first one since ~1 month on my nightstand and haven't noticed any issues

That's awesome! Any chance you would release the docking app?

[–] seasick 3 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Maybe. Currently its just in a private GitHub repository. Would you want to install it from Play Store or be able to build and install yourself?

[–] imjustjealous 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Whatever works for you. I'm fine with building myself, but an apk release would be more accessible.

You could even link it with the STL so people could find it as a complete package!

Obtanium is fine no need for playstore

Which phone is that? I've seen a ton of these, but they are all for iPhones. I have a Pixel 8 pro, but that's apparently not popular enough.

[–] seasick 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Its for my Pixel 7a (+case)

[–] gofsckyourself 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Thanks! Would you also care to share the model?

[–] seasick 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I plan to put at least the STLs it on Printables. But I'm a bit hesitant to share the f3d files. Maybe I'm going to add different sized STLs for different phones - like the Pixel 8 pro :)

Please do! I think your design should fit my 6a perfectly.

[–] Upperhand 2 points 3 days ago (2 children)

That looks awesome. It'd be a nice change for my night stand any hope of you sharing the print file?

[–] seasick 0 points 3 days ago

Thank you! I think I will put it on Printables. No promises though :)
