Every self-respecting Democrat or leftist who cares about themselves or their family should own a firearm and know how to properly and safely use it.
We're entering a time where it may be critical that you need to defend yourself. It is not out of the realm of possibility that you or your family may be targeted in the not distant future for your political leanings.
We all know that the Republicans have guns because they never shut the fuck up about them, and we also know that in their wildest wet dreams Trump will let them run the streets gunning down anyone who is isn't white or anyone who voted Democrat.
They have guns, they know how to use them, how are you going to defend yourself when they come for you?

It doesn't have to be a gun, learning proper self-defense is important for everyone. However, guns are a useful self-defense tool. Marx was a big advocate for organizing and being able to protect each other.

Under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered; any attempt to disarm the workers must be frustrated, by force if necessary.

See, you think Dems don't own firearms, we just don't make it part of our identity.

I'm a dem who has owned firearms for 20 years and I'm well aware that I'm in the minority, don't even try to pretend that it's as widespread as you're trying to insinuate.

defend yourself when they come for you?

No.

See, the Republicans and the MAGA-hats are not going to "come for you" in the form of roving hit squads going door to door and loudly announcing their intentions.

These are bullies. What they're actually going to do is harass and insinuate. They're going to make it seem like they're threatening you, but they're not actually going to threaten you. But they're going to pass ridiculous laws with the intent of squeezing you and whatever other minorities into untenable positions; they're going to appoint their cronies into positions where they can fuck with your businesses and housing and your jobs, and they're going to send the police around constantly to stick their noses into every little thing of every person they don't like under bullshit pretenses. And they're going to pass laws making it legal on paper for them to do all of this. They're going to push and push and push but they're never going to lay a finger on you until you retaliate. And then you'll be the bad guy, and the cops and courts will believe it. And their supporters will eat it up.

I'm waaaaaaay more likely to kill myself with a gun than use it for defense. It would put a gun within arms reach of my children, even if it's locked away. Most people do not need guns.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 15 hours ago

100% agree on both points. Most of the population shouldn't handle a gun. Me included. More people need to be willing to say that about themselves.

gonna push for peaceful solutions until im out of breath, but. there is rhetoric and there is real world in the moment life. as much as i'd like to see restrictions on that amendment, thats the future and reality is today. if you are comfotable with firearms and especially if you're in a hard red area or rural location. don't leave yourself in a position to be waiting for help, because help may not even bother showing up. take time to really consider your current living conditions and community before dissmissing this post outright.

I have thought about it, but I'm not emotionally stable enough that having a gun in my home would be a good idea. Trump's win and the depression and anxiety that followed proved that to me.

If it's not a good idea for you I'd suggest taking first aid classes or looking into community support organizations.

[–] militaryintelligence 5 points 14 hours ago

Fuck my community. Maga freaks.

[–] Fosheze 8 points 17 hours ago

I second this one. Even taking a full EMR (formerly first responder) course is surprisingly cheap and something most people would find useful. Employers also always love having EMRs on staff in any setting so it looks good on a resume too. My course also had us trained in FEMA disaster response procedures and got us signed us for that. Plus EMR volunteers are always needed for large events such as festivals and parades.

Going any higher than that probably wouldn't be worthwhile for the average person though.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 17 hours ago

I know basic first aid and I'm looking into communities nearby. Additionally my family are preppers (Hurricane trama) so we've got some useful things laying around

This is a gentle reminder that anybody with any sort of felony (non-violent included) can not legally own a gun.

With that in mind, certain political entities in power can target specific demographics and charge many of them with felonies in order to remove them as potential opposition.

[–] BuckWylde 11 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

At least with being a convicted felon you can still be president.

[–] Fosheze 4 points 17 hours ago

See, why do we need gun laws when it easier to become president than to buy a firearm?!

~/s obviously~

While this sounds true, it’s also true that Russia desperately wants to cause a civil war in the US, & that propaganda system is active here in Lemmy too, & surfaces in posts like this 🤷‍♂️

The argument has been true for years, so saying it now just seems like a propaganda account trying to whisper poison on my ear 🤷‍♂️

[–] HootinNHollerin 1 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 13 minutes ago)

Now consider the creator of lemmy the whole damn thing is a propaganda system. But at least it’s federated

[–] [email protected] 5 points 18 hours ago

Liberals will not save you.

[–] HootinNHollerin 7 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

Absolutely

And people that will be especially targeted should pursue a CHL

[–] [email protected] 6 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

Fuck guns. If America gets that bad I don’t want to be around.

[–] laverabe 11 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

If America gets that bad

See the years 2017-2021... I don't think the next 4 years are gonna be all that swell. Last time over a million US citizens died. I think they're gonna pump those numbers up this go around.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

I think you’re referencing Covid not gun deaths, but either way I’m personally considering leaving America.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 19 hours ago

Following. Curious to see the how here (which country, what visa or programme, eligibility requirements, etc).

[–] [email protected] 2 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

america has been that bad for a very long time now, they have the lions share of 350 million firearms in civilian circulation, and what do you suppose is going to happen when protesters take to the streets again

[–] [email protected] 2 points 20 hours ago

They will deploy elite airborne unit into Lafayette park because feds get too tired of "pacifying" "rioters"

[–] [email protected] 1 points 19 hours ago

I was thinking a kevlar vest might be a better investment. They may or may not shoot at us, but we can't be the ones to shoot first.

[–] tee9000 1 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

This is not a political discussion lmao

Less about what everyone needs to do. More about individual topics and forming our own opinions without magnetizing towards "the one true opinion".

Dont tell people how to vote or what to do. Educate yourselves, dont simplify life. Trust people to think for themselves because if thats not possible then its pointless anyways.
