We learn something new every day. This is a community dedicated to informing each other and helping to spread knowledge.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must begin with TIL. Linking to a source of info is optional, but highly recommended as it helps to spark discussion.

** Posts must be about an actual fact that you have learned, but it doesn't matter if you learned it today. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.**

Rule 2- Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding non-TIL posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-TIL posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

For further explanation, clarification and feedback about this rule, you may follow this link.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

Unless included in our Whitelist for Bots, your bot will not be allowed to participate in this community. To have your bot whitelisted, please contact the moderators for a short review.

So entire countries are, according to this article, functionally mentally disabled? I find that hard to believe given the bell curve of IQ results.

I don't think there are many non-Americans in this thread who are surprised by this.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA 0 points 34 minutes ago

I've lived in the States. I'm not surprised either.

Healthline is a shit tier source to be fair. Even wikipedia says it is a terrible source. They put it in the same category as the daily mail.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Looks like links to it are completely blacklisted, too. That's rare to see.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 35 minutes ago

Healthline is a medical resource that is substantially written by non-expert freelance writers and reviewed by non-expert advisors. The content is frequently incorrect misinformation, sometimes dangerously so. Due to the heightened requirements for biomedical and medical sources on Wikipedia, the consensus of editors ... was to deprecate Healthline as an unusable source ... and to blacklist Healthline as a hazard to readers. References to Healthline should be removed from Wikipedia.

We probably need to put some national safeguards in place that keep the states from fucking their own educational systems over.

There should be a national minimum for educational standards that the states are not allowed to bypass.

you must be American, because there is a federal dept of education. Betsy Devos ring a bell?

problem with having a federal department of anything is conservative agendas tend to "poison the well".

one way to combat this is department heads should be elected not appointed, and they should have term limits imposed.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

It's nearly impossible to do anything good when you have a major conservative party set on doing bad.

You could have a position of "We should provide food to all children so they can learn without being distracted by hunger" and people would be like "that's communism i'd rather those kids starve"

[–] Anticorp 9 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Which is something that happened recently.

[–] GreenKnight23 4 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

but not in Minnesota! those fuckers got outclassed by Walz.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA 2 points 31 minutes ago

I'm proud my state started giving out free breakfasts and lunches to all schoolchildren, regardless of income, year round, a full year before Walz did.

The rational person in me knows that IQ as a metric of intelligence has long since been proven to be bullshit pseudoscience.

But the anti-american in me is just going to turn that part of my brain off and chuckle for a few moments...

I found the comment I was gonna make.

[–] GreenKnight23 4 points 6 hours ago

now you're a true American! one of us! one of us!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 hours ago

As an American, this article fits with my experience... but I honestly thought the gap would be larger.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 hours ago

I'm not surprised. Immigrating to Canada for seven years and then visiting home was very eye opening.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 7 hours ago

Time to cut the American south loose.
