Part of me just wants them to cast a super jacked guy and just never bring it up while still keeping them a she/her in the scripts

God almost anyone but him.

[–] hellofriend 34 points 5 months ago (3 children)

But he would be very fitting as THE BOULDER

[–] [email protected] 13 points 5 months ago

If Dwayne is cast the boulder will be the one to defeat the fire lord.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 5 months ago

Literally the only acceptable role for this man

[–] VindictiveJudge 4 points 5 months ago

They wanted him to be THE BOULDER in the original series, but there were scheduling conflicts.

Lord I dislike him even more.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 months ago

Literally can hear him say "My name is Toph because it sounds like tough!"

[–] [email protected] 0 points 5 months ago

Still a better casting than half of the people in that terrible Netflix show...

I mean, that's what happens in the episode with the theatre.

[–] VelvetStorm 12 points 5 months ago

Ya, that's why I mentioned it.

The Boulder feels conflicted about trying out for the part of a young, blind girl.

[–] Lemminary 30 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I hope they... err--see this.

Who said that?!

[–] [email protected] 26 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Seems a bit weird to me that submissions are via a Gmail address.

[–] Fredselfish 11 points 5 months ago (1 children)

That is scam yall are aware of that right?

[–] [email protected] 16 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

It has been posted on the official account of Jenny Jue. She would be risking her career if she was putting out casting calls without being authorized to do so.

[–] Fredselfish 5 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I don't care no way Netflix is using a Gmail account to do this.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 5 months ago

Netflix isn't, but the casting agency they outsourced the job to is.

[–] dustyData 12 points 5 months ago (1 children)

It troubles me that this casting and filming is so late. The actors will look even older. I don't think they're planing a timeskip. Since the second season starts immediately after the south water tribe battle.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (2 children)

I don't expect the timeline of the Netflix series to match the animated series. They'll probably make the journey longer to account for actors aging.

I have doubts about this picture though, the gmail address is the first red flag, but there are others. To me, this is more likely to be fake than real.

BTW, even in the original series, Aang's voice actor aging was becoming a problem. He said on the podcast (Braving the Elements) that it's a good thing the show ended after season 3 because he was already straining and didn't have a 4th season in him. If it had come to that I think they'd probably recast him with a voice double, but it's a good thing it didn't come to that!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Regarding your doubts: this casting call has been posted on the official account of Jenny Jue. She would be risking her career if she was putting out casting calls without being authorized to do so.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 months ago

Ah, fair enough! I'm not that surprised but I admit I was wrong.

[–] Aganim 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

If it had come to that I think they'd probably recast him with a voice double, but it's a good thing it didn't come to that!

I'm also glad it didn't come to that. It was already a noticeable change when they had to find a new voice actor for Iroh, let alone when you need to replace the actor for the titular character. Not that I don't respect the work of Greg Baldwin of course, but for me Mako Iwamatsu was the one and only Uncle Iroh. It's a shame he wasn't able to complete his character's journey.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Gotta disagree with you there about it being noticeable. It was seamless to anyone who wasn't specifically listening for it.

[–] Aganim 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Really? I didn't know they had to find a new voice actor when I first watched season 3 and I immediately heard it. Guess I'm a nitpick when it comes to voice acting. 😅

[–] VindictiveJudge 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Some of Iroh's lines late in season 2 are also Baldwin and almost nobody noticed it then. He definitely sounds different, but he's the absolute best match for Mako's distinctive voice anyone could hope for.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 months ago

Well then clearly I went too far with "anyone" :P but I still think the majority of people didn't notice.

In the podcast, Dante Basco (voice of Zuko) recounts that they* started crying when Greg started doing Iroh because it sounded like Mako came back to life. To be fair, there's clearly some exaggeration there for dramatic effect, but I have to say Greg really is spot-on with Iroh.

I will give you that his very first line or two in the show are a little bit off. But not enough to tip me off if I wasn't looking for it.

* he said "we", IIRC, but I don't know who besides him - probably the recording techs.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 months ago (1 children)

If you're blind then how would you even be able to tell if you were Asian?!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago

And how would you tell you're blind?

[–] Atlas_ 6 points 5 months ago

Oddly enough, this could have been a video

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Me: middle-aged American man who can see "I should audition."

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago

So this is what Hasan was auditioning for. Hmmmmm.

[–] sunbytes 3 points 5 months ago

The Boulder better watch his ass;

The Blind Bandit approaches.

[–] CluckN 3 points 5 months ago (3 children)

Blind

Dance and Martial arts experience

What?

[–] BluesF 8 points 5 months ago (1 children)

There are certainly blind dancers. Idk about martial arts but I wouldn't be surprised.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

IIRC Toph, in the original, uses a form of martial arts specifically designed for blind people.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 months ago

According to legend, that style was invented by a blind woman. The Avatar makers didn't know this when they picked it, it was a happy coincidence.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

You are aware that some people are not born blind, but rather lose eyesight later in life?

[–] CluckN 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

You are aware that the largest pretzel ever made weighed 783.81 kg (1,728 lb) and was assembled in El Salvador?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 months ago

Actually I wasn't, thanks for the eye opening relevation!

[–] helpImTrappedOnline 0 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

They are trying to check the disability box while also needing an out for when they choose someone who can actually do the physical aspect. (Yes, a blind person could probably manage on their own, but if you need to choreograph with other people, it might get complicated...that being said, I would love if the actual actress was blind and successful in the role, that would be super cool)
