Donald Trump spent the weekend telling senators they should not pass more unconditional U.S. foreign aid. More than a dozen Republicans ignored him Sunday, moving forward on a bill to send $95 billion in aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

The Senate voted 67-27 to advance the foreign aid supplemental spending bill that doesn’t include border provisions, moving it another step closer to passage. That still isn’t guaranteed, as leaders haven’t yet reached an agreement on GOP-demanded border amendments.

The package faces some resistance from Republicans, who say they won’t back further aid to Ukraine unless it’s amended to include border policy changes. Last week, Republicans blocked a bipartisan border-foreign aid package that was negotiated for months, arguing it didn’t go far enough to limit migration. Consideration of border amendments would require unanimous consent from senators, which is still elusive.

Gotta love that, despite getting everything they wanted for the border, killing the bill resulted in the same support for Ukraine, but no border package.

It's almost like that's what they wanted. Killing the border protections gives them something to campaign on going into the next election. No voters on the right will believe that their own party torpedoed the bill or they will think that it was the right move based on some 4d chess bullshit.

Someone I know who gets all their news from Facebook hates the bill because the border shouldn't be tied to foreign aid. Nevermind the fact that's literally what Republicans have been trying to do for months.

Well hes on to something.... These bills are so jam packed with tons of random shit because that's the only way to get it enough votes to pass.

I also don't think border reform should be married to humanitary aid but here we are.

That said... There's much larger problems to solve than deconvolving our bills.

Same, and also funding genocide in Israel in addition, but Republicans refused to consider aid for Ukraine that wasn't tied to the border. Then they refused it because it was tied to the border. They're obstructionists for the sake of it.

Some people's idea of 4d chess is shitting on the board then claiming victory when their opponent leaves.

They have to be seen as chasing the car, not catching it.

If the border would close and all the exploitable labor disappears then there would be panic with their voters, certainly when the effects start to hit with Trump in office.

They need a boogeyman and something to scare their supporters. Scary illegals, wide open borders, people taking their jobs, etc are scary. If they fix it they can't campaign on it anymore.

Um, Trump, you're not president.

[–] dirthawker0 8 points 10 months ago

And I wish the media would stop treating him like he is, too. I actually occasionally see him referred to as "President" not "former President".

republiQans be like: Let's do whatever the demented rapist fraud tells us to!! Yeah!!

Like, it's beyond idiocy or even sanity. Still. After everything. Still. So gross.

They chose Trump as the person who most accurately represents their values and beliefs. They've chosen him time and time again as their party's top representative. Trump accurately represents conservatives.

[–] cygon 3 points 10 months ago

No shit. And it's not even because he's cleverly engaging with his base, he's just an equally dumb and easily manipulated conservative moron who takes all his opinions wholesale from Fox News.

More like, RepubliKlan

[–] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago

This is how desperate for voters they are nobody is talking about it but gerrymandering and the racist fuck are what keeps the party together.

They haven't really got any big wins in the elections since his presidency. It is really not good for them

“I know it’s become quite fashionable in some circles to disregard the global interests we have as a global power. To bemoan the responsibilities of global leadership,” McConnell said. “This is idle work for idle minds. And it has no place in the United States Senate.”

“We shouldn’t be sending anything overseas until we secure [our own] border,” Paul said Sunday.
