Gov. Mike DeWine has vetoed a bill that nearly all of his Republican colleagues supported but many in LGBTQ communities and child health leaders opposed. The bill DeWine turned away would have banned trans youth from participating in girls’ sports and would have limited the access of trans children under 18 to some medical treatments related to their gender identity.

"Ultimately, I believe this is about protecting lives. Many parents told me their child would be dead today if they did not receive this treatment," DeWine said, describing "gut-wrenching decisions that should be made by parents" and informed by doctors and medical professionals.

"These decisions should not be made by the government," DeWine said, but by the parents who know their kids best.

Holy shit, a Republican that believes in small government, even when he agrees with the bill

[–] aseriesoftubes 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yeah, I don’t buy it. DeWine is a loyal Republican foot soldier on every single policy with the possible exception of gun control. He doesn’t believe in small government at all. He’s up for reelection next year and doesn’t want to get his ass handed to him. This move lets him say “see look, I’m such a moderate” so that he can gain appeal among low-info voters.

A) DeWine is term-limited from the governorship, and is unlikely to seek further office

B) he traveled the state talking to health professionals and parents and they convinced him he was wrong

I would never vote for DeWine over any Ohio Dem, but he is among the best that the Republican party has, period. He's at least still human.

Yup, as an Ohioan ... I agree with this sentiment entirely

I mean, you're probably right and this is just political games. I didn't want to say as much since I don't know much about dewine except how he totally fucked the East Palestine response

A politician using their conscience? Prepare to become a pariah.

Under Mike Dewine for 2023:

  1. Higher budget on school lunches (2023+)
  2. Abortion protcted by state Constitution
  3. Marijuana protected by state Constitution
  4. This

Let's not forget he was one of the first governors to act quickly during COVID (cancelled The Arnold). Just a reminder.

Talk about ending the year on a high note!

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He isn't responsible for 2 and 3. Those were ballot initiatives passed by the citizens. 3 was just legalizing marijuana, not a constitutional amendment. And the gop controlled senate is already ratfucking the law with DeWine's full support.

But I get your point.

I really did respect his response to covid. The fact that he actually had qualified, smart people advising him, and that he actually listened to them... was very out of character for a modern republican governor (although I still believe they did Dr Acton dirty).

His reasons for vetoing this bill show that he still has the ability to be pragmaticaly principled. It sucks that he kissed Trumps ring, but if that's what he had to do to avoid getting primaried and replaced by a true maga believer, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. If have to have a Republican governor, I'd prefer to have one who isn't a complete fruitcake.

I completely agree with you and I even phrased it as "under [his term]" vs "ushered by". Thank you for the correction on point 3. Here's hoping going into the future laws and initiatives follow the will of the people instead of the usual Republican [read: meme] handbook we are accustomed too.

I'm honestly thinking there will be too many "home gardens" by the time the Republicans get to neutering the recent initiative. I'm guessing it will be a very similar situation to the Great Prohibition if they do it get it.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Yeah, no. He was adamantly against 2 and 3 and even ran reefer madness ads. After legalization Republicans tried to neuter the bill as much as possible and even remove home grow and making it illegal to even share weed. We got 2 and 3 from voter initiatives and essentially needed to pass a vote twice in order to get 2. Once to reject Republican initiatives to make it basically impossible to amend the constitution and then to pass the actual amendment.

Still immediately hypocritical

"These decisions should not be made by the government," DeWine said, but by the parents who know their kids best.

Ohio's hospitals have stressed they don't do gender reassignment surgeries on children. But DeWine said he wants to develop state rules to ensure that no gender transition surgery is conducted on minors in Ohio.

It's good that he vetoed this, but they're still obsessed with stopping something that isn't happening in the first place.

I can't seem to edit so I'm coming here to say this is Ohio we're talking about

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I keep telling you people on the Internet Ohio isn't the Florida of the Midwest and never was lol

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

Combining sports and medical treatment really gives the game away. They just can't help themselves.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Too good to be true... what's really happening that we're getting distracted from??

[–] captainlezbian 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They’re giving a not insignificant portion of our weed taxes to the cops in direct defiance of the ballot initiative we used to legalize it and we’re mad about it as well as reducing the number of plants per household and various other ways of fucking with our marijuana legalization

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

The changes to issue 2 were never passed the house. They will definitely be trying again late January though.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I wish I had your degree of faith and trust in the government to be well-coordinated. With typical state government time lines if this was meant to cover something up it was probably something that happened 2 years ago.

[–] PRUSSIA_x86 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ohio is still purple enough that DeWine has to play to both sides. Our governors are always either "principled" conservatives (non-fascist theocrats) or corpo-dems.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

I understand your cynicism, but it seems like he had a genuine change of heart on this.

[–] werefreeatlast 6 points 1 year ago

Who, what, when, where, how?

Where: Ohio.

Feel free to thank the lady on your way out.

I can't get a bead on this guy. I know he actually believes in Covid vaccinations, he followed through on the voice of his constituents by enshrining abortion access, and now he's advocating for trans youth and he's a REPUBLICAN?!?!? On social issues he passes the vibe check, yet somehow still a Republican. I don't get it
