Not directly relevant but whenever I consume Indian media, I’m struck by how utterly foreign it feels. I watch a Chinese show? I see where it comes from. Mexican? Through line found. French? I understand the satire. Indian social norms and cultural development seem either so idiosyncratic or novel that they sincerely take me out. They, as a people and a nation, befuddle me in such a unique way. This isn’t a critique, just someone looking from the outside with curiosity and confusion.

Chinese media: everything is perfect in an uncanny valley sort of way

Mexican media: drugs, Jesus, boobs, or cartels

French media: like a student film with a budget

Indian media: this guy just punched a car so hard it turned into a transformer, then he turned into a transformer, then they fought and now everyone's dancing

[–] DaMonsterKnees 16 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Sauce? I'd like to know more about these transformers. Thanks!

You're seeing India as a whole, but you gotta split it into pieces. It's a melting pot of ethnicities that exist disharmoniously. Unlike China where the Han Chinese pretty much wiped out most of their extended family over the course of centuries by way of brutal warfare and discrimination, India managed to retain some familial morality where everyone lives together while hating each other.
It's a similar, yet different path of evolution.

China - There is no war in Ba Sing Se.
India - Bloody bitch bastard bloody
USA - Murika, fuck yeah!

And yes, I am talking out of my ass.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

USA - Murika, fuck yeah!

We do also have sensationalist films like "Supersize Me"

[–] morphballganon 7 points 10 months ago

This is precisely why Ms. Marvel felt so weird to me. I felt like certain parts kept those novel ideas, and other parts were adjusted for an American audience, and the two didn't mesh at all.

Where do you access/find foreign media?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

Mostly through friends but occasionally Netflix. Between film buffs and immigrant families, it’s a smorgasbord. Picking something out for myself, I’ll check justwatch first to determine whether I need to look elsewhere and dbzero has guides on elsewhere. Check their wiki to find far more information than I can offer. Over a 5.1 or under a 3.0 on imdb and the genre are about all that I check, so I’m not great at recommending anything to watch. I did enjoy pee mak as a Scary Movie styled comedy, though.

This is such a fucked situation I hope it's not real

[–] kingaloo 67 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Sadly this is pretty common

And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, "Well, how did I get here?"
...
And you may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"
And you may ask yourself, "Where is that large automobile?"
And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful house"
And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful wife"

Same as it ever was

[–] son_named_bort 3 points 10 months ago

And you may say to yourself "My God, what have I done!"

Look up honour killings if you seriously think it could be fake.

Come out as gay, only option left

[–] weeahnn 58 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Anon comes out as gay.

Parents actually accept him, and the whole marriage thing is off.

Parents now want anon to marry a guy he never met.

Anon can't get a break.

I’m pretty sure I remember reading that identical plot of relationshipadvice on the site-that-shall-not-be-named. 90% chance it was fake but the ending was a nice read with the guy realizing he’s bi, and actually hits it off with one of the guys his mom picks.

[–] [email protected] 35 points 10 months ago (1 children)

guess anon's parents sold him for a huge dowry

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago

They do have the kids talk before marriage. Anons stupid

[–] TwoBeeSan 32 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Imagine placing your worth on being with another person. Too much cultural pressure for shit that came about in medieval/ancient times shouldn't be ruining people of today's lives.

Then again we still have holy wars so maybe same shit different era 🤷‍♂️

Shitty if true, but if this isn't would not doubt situations like this occur.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago

Uh, so males have existed for quite a long time, and it is a fact that without a female, a male is not going to reproduce.

Reproduction is supported by instinct as a result of evolution by natural selection. In short, the instinct to find value in reproduction is deep, and old. And not from medieval culture.

[–] mvirts 21 points 10 months ago (1 children)

T t t t talk to her about it :P gotta put in the work to build a relationship with someone. Don't assume she's ignorant just because she's ignoring it.

it's a quite common phrase in indo-english, "please do the needful" which means like, please do whatever is necessary.

[–] Dadifer 10 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I swear, I always feel like someone is asking me to use the bathroom.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago

It does sound like a euphemism

[–] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (2 children)

But what does he mean by this? I have not done the needful sir? What is he referring to? Like consummation?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago

He hasn't thought it it through?

*Please do the needful" is how some people from India end work emails where native English speakers might write, "Sincerely." It's a direct translation from Hindi where the intended meaning gets lost in translation. The intent is to ask for help or information.

[–] ladicius 13 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Get a vasectomy. Make her go to work and earn money.

[–] VaultBoyNewVegas 6 points 10 months ago

Gotta make some muthafucking money.
